  • @toocool2beat yeah can you send me some notes too please ? :)

  • 'attractive but not as attractive as others i've seen" ...ouch

haha the ending was cute :3

  • seirously this was soo impressive

  • my brother is downs and he hugs me exactly the same way he hugs his brother at the end and i have the same expression

  • @tahliatreehugger the guy had like no expression :S

  • Totally Fabulous! My daughter has Down Syndrome and she brings out the best in everyone she meets, including her brother.

  • Totally Fabulous! My daughter has Down Syndrome and she brings out the best in everyone she meets, including her brother.

  • It takes a person who is totally uninhibited to bring out our nature. We too often hide behind masks we wear for life.

  • Wooo Meadowbank !

  • That was really really good ! Although i must admit, the diseased man guided it a little to win. Great script though still enjoyed it :)

  • Well I think that was fantastic and with that saying that who would want Shakespeare and frank Spencer quoted day in day out it depends on the type of person you are

  • Firstly, this only won because of the downy, it was doing nothing interesting in terms of cinema. One might go so far as to say that it was barely a film.

Secondly, that bitch barely spent five minutes with the 'tard. If she had to spend as much time with him as, I don't know, the BROTHER, then maybe she would be all blassé with him also. Imagine for yourself having Shakespeare and Frank Spencer quoted at you day in and day out. Where is your empathy you cunts?

  • @Jason011987 Gerard proved to the world in this role that having a disability doesn't have to hold you back. He won Best Male Actor at one of the most prestigious short film festivals in the world, and in doing has inspired thousands to believe in themselves and their own abilities. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about this film, but to sit there and use derogatory, offensive language towards Gerard and everyone he represents is disgusting. You missed the whole point of the film.

  • @JakeWillis3 Fuck are you talking about? I'm sure he's a decent bloke but he proved nothing of the sort. Giving him the award for best actor strikes me as an utterly patronizing act and the people involved in that decision should be ashamed of themselves. There is nothing remotely prestigious about Tropfest let alone the awards it gives out. 'To sit there?' Would I have been better to stand? Dick. Again, crying before Gerard is hurt. How dare you be so condescending. You are ill-considered.

  • @JakeWillis3 You know how he could've won best actor legitimately? If he had have played a character who didn't have down syndrome. That sure would've been something...

  • @Jason011987 Being an actor is about playing a role and conveying a message successfully. Look at the likes and the comments on this. Probably 95% think Gerard did just that. And Gerard didn't play himself in this film, he's an actor and he was given a role to play and he did it successfully. Search 'Beautiful - Gerard O'Dwyer', his Down Sydnrome is never mentioned in that role, and the play won judges choice and people's choice. Have your opinion, that's fine, but don't call him a 'tard'.

  • @JakeWillis3 If you give a cat the role of a cat, it will play it successfully. Does that make the cat a great actor? Read the SMH article 'He's my Tropfest brother.' All he did was play himself. I'm unsurprised 95% of people share your condescending attitude but, fortunately, quality in art, just as it isn't found at Tropfest, isn't determined democratically. I'm not searching shit 'cause I don't care. I used the word 'tard because I was taking the brother's side. But I probably shouldn't have.

  • @Jason011987 Just because Gerard has DS doesn't mean he can just play any role with anything to do with DS - everyone is different. I know Gerard very well and yeah he loves impersonations, but he is 100% playing a role here. You can be an art snob and say he doesn't deserve this, or you can just accept it and be happy for a guy that has spent his whole life being being bullied and discriminated agains, has refused to lie down and has gone on to do something amazing in winning this.

  • @JakeWillis3 Its called having some respect for an art form you clearly have no respect for since your willing to use it as a way to lie to a disabled person about the extent of their abilities. Say Gerard had a keen interest in air traffic control, why not give him a job doing that? Because people would die. 'Oh, but he's been bullied and discriminated against his whole life.' 'Well, by all means get this man a headset and give him the award for air traffic officer of the year!'

  • @JakeWillis3 Face it: you cynically applaud his acting because you think you can trade on some 'there's no good or bad art therefore anything goes' attitude. Can't I just be happy for Gerard? Well, given that he has been used as a cheap trick by the maker of this piece of trash to elicit a base sympathy from a gullible audience and, as it turned out, judging panel, no! I cannot! I'm sickened by such spectacle. I mean, for Christ's sake, you do not help people by lying to them or about them.

  • @Jason011987 Seeing as you're part of the tiny, tiny minority who thinks he doesn't deserve it, has it ever crossed your mind that you're wrong and that no one is lying to Gerard about his ability, he deserved to win. You're not more cultured then everyone. Look at how you're carrying on about this. It's a sweet, inspirational story and you're turning into this because you think you're so much more knowledgeable about art. Gerard won because he was the best actor. You're a fucking tool.

  • @JakeWillis3 I want you do to do some things for me:

    1. Wiki: Argumentum ad populum.

    2. Know that I've actually reconsidered my position. I think he deserved the award for best actor. But I also think the 1992 academy award for best actor should have gone to the dog from Beethoven.

    3. Never stop telling yourself & everyone else that this is a sweet, inspirational story in which Gerard delivered an award winning portrayal of a young man with down syndrome.

    4. & most importantly: go fuck yourself.

  • @Jason011987 Haha it's actually funny how dumb you are. How about you just go away and write back when you do something half as good with your life has Gerard has with his.

  • This shows exactly that retarded have feelings to ! Not like people think they don't have feelings ! It's not because they are different you need to push them away ! They want to be like you but just can't, and that's already hard for them ! They struggle with their life already enough. I would rather have a retarded friend with a great heart inside of him than a normal guy who doesn't care a fuck about you !

  • dogs and cats and dogs and cats and

  • Brilliant. A masterpiece. If only more films were like this rather than the absolute shit we get in cinema we get these days.

  • @SuperEverythingman You're looking in the wrong places if you think all cinema is shit.

  • Great film

  • This was filmed at Meadowbank, wasn't it?

  • i'm sorry... i'm so dumb i don't get this one... :c Help?

  • @OhHiYourePurple

the guy in the hood is the other guys brother and his embarrassed of him.

  • absolutely love this :)) big ups to you richard ! hehe, his from MERRYLANDS 2160 everyone <33

  • "TOO BAD. JUST DID!" lol

  • should be more careful with their money! hehe so sweet :)

  • Very wonderful! And most deserving of the winning piece it got!

  • best of the lott!!

  • huh crazy I went to school with Genevieve I didn't know she made this!

  • i love how he quotes the world is not enough at the start of the film :D

  • a true exploitation film.

  • @clublocktothehead Clearly you dont know who this person is, and are not informed of his dreams he had to be an actor. In the 50's people with downs were locked away. This Guy lives a full life dictated by his dreams supported by very loving supportive people in his life. His life has inspired me to make an impact on people with disabilities. Please dont be so ingorant of the facts before you make such as a dumb statement!

  • @clublocktothehead Downsploitation.

  • LOVE ITTTTT :D

  • omgg i love thisss! :):) AMAZING.

Simple. Funny. And really effective :)

    It so posite......looove itttt

    no surprise it won...

  • Amanda's hot!

  • Very Nice! Only thing that bothers me it's the photography... its the only thing that is not that impressive... other than that, GREAT JOB!!!!

What Up Funes gives it 4.5 STARS

  • This is so awsum. The man with down syndrome is funny, but him having it makes me sad:(

  • This is so cute :)

  • Richard is so amazing. I pity and admire him. it almost made me cry when he hugged the other guy. So sweet.

  • @MegaShannii That was his brother :) I feel the same way about Richard, he is amazing. Very entertaining.

  • The man with down syndrome is so amazing. I pity and admire him.

  • Aaaawesome

  • loved this

  • this is really good

  • i saw this on tv

  • I think this is my favourite Tropfest video so far. It's lovely! :)

  • never have i been in so much agreeance with the judges of tropfest

  • TOO BAD. YOU JUST DID

  • Was that his brother?

  • This is crazy, I used to see that guy at the bus stop in Midland all the time when I was a little kid and he was ALWAYS impersonating James Bond and making the little gun shape with his hands!

  • omg so touching and sad defentily deserved to win

  • @tigerzrule well your a faget then

  • @tigerzrule well don't YOU have such an open mind.

  • my mom is a speciall kids teacher. I've seen a lot of cases in wich this happens, that a family member doesn't accept the speciall kid. i think that's too bad, those kids have a really big heart and a speciall way to see the life

  • I'd rather watch this than Avatar any day

  • that's very touching.

  • that is fking genius, what an ending

  • for anyone on the previous comments criticizing tropfest for not focusing on directing, film technique etc id like to say that a good film is not defined as a film with awesome film techniques effects as such. A good film will carry out a message intended by the director and bring emotions from the audience and relate to them. As you can see from this film, it was simple yet it touched the hearts of many and the message was clear as day. Thumbs up to the people who made this short film =]

  • That was a great ending!

  • What a beautiful movie, thank you. Amanda is great, I wish people like Amanda live happily :)

  • aww that guy is adorable!!

  • can somebody please tell me what instrument is being used alongside the paino at the start?

  • @tahernojavan sounds like a xylophone

  • It's hard not to judge people by their appearance, as much as I would like to see the inner beauty, I can't help but to get attracted by their appearance. I hope one day I will be able to see the inner beauty and overcome their "fake" appearance.

  • @NightxStep I think you're taking the inner beauty idea literally as shown by all of your "favourited" videos being Black Ops and Medal of Honour videos. Letting go with both barrels of your 12 gauge shotty on someone, is not the path to discovering their inner beauty.

  • @SauronsEye To be honest I think my favourited videos are irrelevant to whatever I said on this video since I really can't remember my complete statement. I know inner beauty, but I am still young and I choose not to seek it, it may also be that I am being selfish. And how did you find my comment anyway? if you don't mind answering.

  • @SauronsEye Sorry, cut out the last part I said, I just scrolled down and saw my very own comment.

  • He came my school today.Date:12 November 2010.

  • This is my chosen text for "belonging" for the HSC. great text. so full of stuff to talk about.

  • @wellar6 haha same here! Was also thinking about considering it for 'Into the World'. Works great with both, but better with belonging. Its an amazing film!

  • @wellar6 I used this as my Distinctive Voice Related text for Module A in the HSC

  • @wellar6 omg same here.

  • @wellar6 Good luck, but you're certainly not the only one doing it as your additional text.

  • @wellar6 YAH ME TOO

  • my favorite tropfest short film ever. Makes a statement

  • Wow, that ending. Didn't see that coming.

  • love this short film !

  • Dear Genevieve thank you for an inspiring film

  • interesting! many-a-time there have been people with clear psychological problems raving at others at my bus stop and only a few times do people respond. i'm not an expert in down syndrome but i think more important was to focus on how had the main character been good looking with a charming accent of some kind the girl would have been swooped off her feet and the hooded guy would have been laughing at his whimsy.

  • Holy crap! He used to go to my high school! WOW! Crazy to see where some people end up. Good on him!!!

  • werd, that was mad good, i didnt cry or nuthin, cuz i didnt find it sad at all, just good, smilin the whole time, i luv people, n sumtimes i feel like the main character, i dont hav down syndrome, but i like 2 talk 2 any1 it doesnt matter 2me what kind of person u r 2me, n this life u get alot of cold shoulders, people need 2 put aside there differences n luv 1another, anyway good film yo

  • amazing, beautiful,There are so many different types of people in this world, but we all come together and share our opinions in film.

  • It's a brilliant film, no doubt, but I can't feel how one can tear up cause of it. I think it's brilliant cause it's a need in the world for people to communicate outside our social standards, but I'm comfused if the fact that the man is born Down syndrome is the part that triggers the affections? Of those I've met with Down, sympathy is not something they desire, it's to be seen as they are, just another man. I think the movie cought that message, but I think the responders hasn't.

  • i fucking cried. that's right, im man enough to admit it.

    God bless

  • i'm tearing up

  • So moving.. So amazing.. So beautiful.. Well done, well done. (:

  • "too bad, just did!"

  • Good video with a powerful message. I must confess that I didn't know much about Down's syndrome before. I googled for about 15-20 mins after watching this video and came across an eyebrow-raising statistic:

These are the ratios of mother's age to the baby's chances of getting DS

    20 years ---- 1 in 1500

    30 years ---- 1 in 900

    45 years ---- 1 in 30

The last one was particularly shocking for me. 1 in 30 is seriously high!

  • wow - I am shocked that I just burst into tears at the end - SO moving, so incredible!

  • aha genevieve came to our school to give us an enlightening speech on her short film today (:

  • Just beautiful! If you know anyone with Downs Syndrome you will know what I mean!

  • hey that was really good!

  • This film is inspiring

  • i cant quite understand this, who can explain some?? thx

  • it simply portrays a person changing perspective.Amanda at first feel violated by richard(down syndrome man) as he was in her "personal space" but later on she changed her perspective of richard. the boy is richards brother he too changed perspective.he was at first embarrassed.but later on learnt to be proud of his brother. We are currently studying this film in my english class. :) hope u understand it now.

  • @0hCouture me 2 :p

  • @0hCouture

hey i was hoping if you could please send me somenotes on this videos?

  • @justmeeaaa hey there! we studied this last year when i was in yr 11 and now i just graduated from 12 so i threw all my stuff away. I'm so sorry. feel free to inbox me with questions and i'll try my best to remember some stuff. so sorry again.

  • @0hCouture awww thanks anyways:)

is there anyone else that could possibly send me their notes ?

  • @justmeeaaa i don't think so. we didnt really study it deeply. maybe just two 80 minutes lesson.

  • mcdonalds used him for one of there adds as a way of showing they hire disabled people kind of sad really

  • @frans1012

imcdonalds did not use him for the add, it was a true story i

  • Meh. It seems to me like tropfest goes for the soppier ending rather than a creative story and good directing.

  • It seems to me that this was a winner. Look at how many hearts it has touched. Did you know that this film has even changed the Government's perspective towards people with Down Syndrome as they are offering more services for them. This film shows that Down Syndrome people have no barriers towards showing affection and are not afraid of taking emotional risks like how we are. I think that we can all learn something from them.

  • how does it? i would think anyone who did what he did at the start was wierd. besides going up and taping someone is very invasive and most people would be put off and probably tell them to piss off. but my first comment was about tropfest focusing too much on the story rather than directing, film technique etc. anyone can do a touching story. im just saying i dont think its very creative.

  • fwark.

    mimi no softy,

But i seriously was balling when lil tom n gramps hug, i related so much to this and its so touching

    meeeeek :)

  • Yayy filmed in meadowbank

  • it brings tears to my eyes it touch me a lot..love yoooour family whoever they may be..

  • Beautiful

gave me so many emotions in such a short time.

    loved it

  • this video makes me laugh, it makes me cry and most of all it makes me happy.

probably the best piece of footage i've seen in a long time.

  • That was very good, I loved the simplicity of it. Well done.

  • Well Deserved winner

  • wow, that was brilliant

  • Oh so amazing! awesome movie with a wondeful meaning

  • awesome i have never seen such a gratest and creativi one

  • This video should have a lot more views, i really liked it!

    Really sweet.

  • i dont get it

    explain plz

  • uhh! the boy is his brother! i get it

  • Judging people by the way they appear is so easy. If only we could get past our material eyes we would see the true beauty inside every person

  • Oh, this was the best <3

  • this video was great=] crazy how it all shows so much meaning and the views of people.also how quikly judging someone can change. patrick magee is cute ; )

  • wonderful, this really did deserve to win :)

  • Hey Guys if you like the film, support the filmmakers by voting for it in the Indie Flix film festival! google wow indie flix, find the website, register to vote, and then give a 5 star rating!

  • Lovely

  • even though i saw the ending coming, i was suprised the way it moved me, at the moment he embraces his brother. i found it a very warm and nice film to watch.

  • I saw the end coming as soon as he walked over and asked him to say something, but it was still a very good film

  • This is beautiful. Easy to see why it won. very touching

  • Captivating, moving, and a powerful message. I saw myself in each character including the bus driver.

  • Sweet, That's what love is all about..

  • I loved it. ♥

  • Beautiful film. Thanks for posting.
