If I were in this store and saw such behavior, I would have some rather unkind things to say about the cashier. Racism in any form is not tolerated. Yes, Islam has done a huge amount of damage - and will do anything it can to do more - but it is unacceptable to attack innocent Muslims. Criticize the religion, not the people.
For the sake of transparency, I am not a Muslim - though I am a VERY visible minority - and I am critical of any ideology which can be and is used to cause destruction.

I'm even going to convert because i love it so much. it is still not in me 100% to wear the hijab once i convert, but i know when my heart tells me it is the right time i will be proud to cover. durring 9/11 i was a freshman in HS and i never ever hated or blamed muslims for what happened. it was a tragedy done by a bunch of evil people. Unfortunately, it's probably not good "business" to show Muslims condemning terrorism as well as extremism, but we have. The majority of the 1.6 billion Muslims do reject extremism because it's not only a problem for you, but it's a problem for us as well and even to a larger scale.
I'll give you a recent situation in Florida, where the local Muslims were condemning the extremists by using some bus ads, but a Jew objected to it and want these PAID ads removed. It's now being ruled on.

This isn't just a Texas phenomena, it occurs throughout the world. There is just a lot of discrimination and you'll find it not just in how people look at you, but based on what you wear or based on with whom you choose to associate. Don't put this all on Texas or the rural as is often where we put the blame it happens in the inner cities, rural countryside, United States (and other countries with the greater diversity).
