My all time favorite RL tune right here. Those Kansas boys Moreland & Arbuckle really tear it up big time. Witnessing them break it down with Dustin Arbuckle's blazing harp work is incredible.
This number is... definitely, from top to bottom, altogether beyond doubt, absolutely and wholly unquestionably, certainly totally, positively completely, categorically entirely and from beginning to end utterly undeniably....... played out of E minor in standard tuning.
The versions up here on you tube of "Poor Boy" and "Telephone Blues" recorded in the same session are also played out of an E minor shape in standard tuning.
More obvious perhaps is the magical work of unique genius!
A fine lesson to all the stupid white blues musicians who spend most of their time talking about expensive and hard to find guitars... They are full of shit. They belong to Shania Twain or Hanna Montana. "A custom Gibson, a rare Stella, a $30, 000 dollars Olson." Faggots motherfuckers. As soon as some stupid jerk stars to talk about vintage guitars you know something is rotten... R. L. Burnside is great.
@biologias3 HaHa yeah i sort of have to agree - though it seemsa bit loaded & angry how you putit over = i mean the only people those people are fooling are themselves so - no harm done anywhere elsewhere really !
nobody plays the riffs this man plays . What a genius! I finally found the sound I'm lookin for . the problem is it 'll take me a lifetime to play like that. Definitely the best acoustic blues I've ever heard . absolutely!!!
Maybe this video will help....The channel is .."ncroson".....Name of video is "burnside slide tuning"...Apparently RL's son Daniel showed this guy the tuning.........Rest in Peace R.L
@caintuck2 Its definitely standard tuning, but this is the only time where the pitch is accurate. I've listened on several other recordings and videos of this same song and he always seems to be sharp or flat. That might be what is causing confusion for people. The rhytm pattern is very tough to duplicate. I've been working on it about a week now and I'm close but still lacking a bit.
@Chaduke The Man is playing a whole drum kit on an acoustic guitar! I've been working on it too for a while, not so much to copy this tune; just to incorporate The Man's whole rhythm/groove thing into my own playing. Good luck to us both; we'll need it. Is it the thumb or the index with the back of the nail on the off beats? Oh well, back to the woodshed...
@caintuck2 Thanks for reminding me to get back on this, I haven't practiced it for a while. I actually learned it both ways, and to me the nail sounds better on most guitars because its got a high pitch, but I really think he's using his thumb and just has some crazy callous on it. I built mine up but it took a while and I still couldn't get the sound like I wanted. The notes are all correct, and the swing rythm is good, but the volume and timbre of the notes sound a little off.
@MixmasterAce It took me 2 days to try and match that tuning. For me, I had to tune to E flat, THEN tune to open A. Nice ear my friend. Very nice. PEACE and MUSIC!
I'm not sure about open G, to me you can see his fingers on the Em chord and the sound is Em. I dunno I could be wrong, I'm not trying to start yet another dumb youtube flame war.
The rhythm is all off the picking pattern and the muting. You can get a decent approximation by just thumb picking down on each eighth note and then using your first finger on the upstrokes where they fall. I think that's basically what he's doing. Then do that for about 30 years until you sound like R.L. :)
no I have no idea what a guitar even looks like, thats why I commented. Its standard because it IS in standard, not open G or E....standard! Its a simple em chord he's playing off.
Its not the guitar bro, its the man who's playin it. The best music can be made with the poorest quality instrument if it is in the hands of a master.
hey i don't think that is a classical kinda looks like it has a slotted headstock but that doesn't always mean it's a classical guitar, classical guitars have a wider neck...
this is just sick...love to watch him smile while he's playing such a heavy groove....he makes it look so easy, but it's difficult to replicate....love rl

But I prefer the band version from the album 'Burnside on Burnside' - check out Kenny Brown's BRILLIANT slide-guitar solo! Mesmerising!
