PEPCON now owned by ATK Thiokol and relocated to Utah makes solid rocket fuel the same type use in the solid rocket boosters and the Delta rockets when the plant blew up it rained shrapnel on Vegas most of the buildings are still in Henderson and the plant was rebuilt but a new company owns it now.
Wouldn't make a difference in this instant. Because the plant was burning for long enough to vacate the surrounding areas. It would not be anything like a nuclear bomb. Not even close.
@Irondaddy433 pffft...u couldnt evacuate the current half a million people that reside in henderson in an hour. not even close. it would very much be like a nuke in terms of loss of life...tens of thousands just from the pressure of the shock wave from the blast.
One can only imagine what greater loss of life there'd be if this had happened today. That area is now all developed. Think the devastation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and apply that to the current city of Henderson, Nevada.
I guess this was one of the lingering aftereffects of the Challenger disaster. Because of the sudden halt in the space shuttle program, the inventory of solid-fuel rocket propellant was piling up but nowhere to go.
That white factory alomost to the center of the video ... oooooh! After 0:25, where is the factory?!? Blown away!
I've seen this a hundred times but I just noticed something I never saw before at 1:31 just as the large explosion happens you can see a line of fire travel horizontally from the center of the explosion to the left, very fast, I wonder if that's the pipeline rupturing.
I will never forget this day. Was one hell of an explosion and the city was in utter chaos. I had to replace some of our windows, put our doors back on the hinges and put part of our fence back up.
If you guys look carefully in the lower right hand corner of the screen (And you should Full-screen it ) at 1:00 , You can see a car driving along along and get blasted clear off the road, I wonder if the driver survived THAT??
@stankylittleangus O.K. At around 1:00, Look in the lower right hand corner of the screen, You see a car starting to go between the '6 Day' sentence and the rotating Earth graphic, just as The car goes between them The blast blows him off the road, See it??
Very impressive. You should upload, like HankAmericanEngine said, the full vid of this epic explosion! Thanks for sharing this video at this quality. If you had any other videos related, please, share with us.

@Irondaddy433 The largest explosion was estimated to be equivalent to a 1 kiloton nuclear air burst

Damn, that's almost as bad as the night I went a little too heavy on the tacos!

Anyone ever figure out a yield on that second blast? I'd guess it's as large as some of the smaller, sub-kiloton, tactical nuclear weapons.
Nater245689 3 months ago
@Nater245689
1 kiloton according to the Wiki page about the World's Largest non-Nuclear blasts.

MrScream1t 5 months ago
If you watch when it explodes, the second explosion, watch the smoke, you can actually see it get sucked in, then blown out with shockwave.

This the real deal. I lived there when it happened. It was scary.
