to determine a song's key what tone/chord do you hear the most...that is what "key" mean's .So this song for example even though it starts on a "D' chord the tone/chord you hear the most is "G" so the song is in "G" that's why jamming in Em pentatonic works so well as well as G major Pentatonic.....take for example "cant you see" is the same chords basically D,C,G but you hear the D chord the most so that song is in the key of D and playing D major Pentatonic works so well.

Actually it's G mixolydian. The chords are D, C, G. The home is definatly the G chord (its a V IV I Progression) So that makes it G major scale. The solo and vocals are played with a flat 7th (F) not an F# as in the key of G. Try playing F# when soling, it will make this song sound a little lame, its a flat 7. Another word for a major scale with a flat 7 is Mixolydian, the 5th mode of the major ;-)

The home chord in this song is definatly G (it wants to resolve to G) Try playing this song and ending on a D, it sounds awkward as hell, it wants to land on G, thats the root. If G is our root (G major) and we play an F natural over it, we can solo with notes

G,A,B,C,D,E,F which is the key of C, but becuase G is our home chord, it must be G mixo. D major chord is modulation.

Ok, so I didn't specify pentatonic - that still doesn't change the relationship between G major and E minor.

Incidentally, smart guy, there's no B# in G major either. B# is C. They're enharmonic equivalents.

Anyway, it's not pentatonic because both solos have a C in them.

There is no B# in G major. Although, there is a B# in the G# major scale. The 3rd degree of the G# major scale always has to be some kind of a B, so we use B#. However, most people replace the G# major scale for the Ab Major instead, otherwise we have to use double sharps. Go to Google and search "Circle of 5ths".

By the way, this song sounds good switching between G major and minor pentatonic.
