The US supports Israel because of organizations like AIPAC. At one point during the Cold War it was considered a pawn against the Soviet Union and even then it's importance was doubtfull.

If we don't give them preferential trade deals on their goods, and don't provide them with giveaways they would be reduced greatly militarily and economically. (I think the US has given for every Israeli citizen like 20k $ US) more foreign aid than all other foreign aid combined since the 50's.
