the reason for this unit is it carrys tactical rescue equipment high rise rescue it has a set of hurst tools for mvas and also what ever they need for swat and hazmat equipment also the blue lights is a new law in new york state for all emergency units must have a rear facing blue light and when ur on the road it helps alot for people to see.
@04smallmj Blue isn't the best color for emergency vehicles. Red, white and blue are a very good mix, other colors like green (Chicago) or orange/ yellow as "support"-colors are nice too. You can see red and green from a far distance much better than blue.
@Rummeltobi In fact, the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute conducted a rather exhaustive study in 2008 for the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA on the colors of emergency lights and their relative effectiveness. Blue was the most conspicuous color in all situations regardless of the age of the person or intensity of light. Blue was also most conspicuous in both day and night. If you send me your email I will send you the report. Thanks for watching my vids!
@Rummeltobi code3paris's reply is interesting, but a reason why I like blue the most is because nothing else on the road uses blue lights, and you can spot emergency vehicles straight away. If you see a flash of red light in the corner of your eye it could be anything, traffic light, brake light, school bus, turn signals etc etc. I also think that forward facing red and rear facing white lights are a daft idea. it should be white only for front and red only for back!
@04smallmj that's one of the reasons why you aren't allowed front-facing red lights on any vehicle in the UK so that you don't get confused about which way the vehicle is going.
@ks10308 They are used by the ESU of NYPD. From their own page: the unit provides specialized support and advanced equipment to other NYPD units. For example, its Canine Unit helps with searches for perpetrators and missing persons. The Emergency Service Unit also functions as a Special Weapons and Tactical Unit (SWAT) and NYPD hostage negotiators assist and secure the safety of hostages. Members of "ESU" are cross trained in multiple disciplines for police and rescue work.
one of the red grill lights is out, so it makes it look like he he turning left when he isn't

So do they use the blue for the back but not for the front? They're whole lighting color scheme is very confusing...

@pyro999maniac Go to wikipedia and search for "NYPD ESU".
They're essentially a combination of a police rescue service, SWAT team and advanced police support I think.

Blue suits NYPD better. Blue is used in my country mostly, either way, great video!

It seems bizarre to me that blue is now legal on the back, but not the front... Blue is so much better as an emergency vehicle light colour!
