There is nothing to add to the general feeling of admiration for the singers and their performance in this rendition however the trumpeter deserves a special mention....on this recording he is well to the fore and performing magnificently!!!
i have the old live recording 33 of this Trovatore. The audience was very passionate, maybe Lauri Volpi was some time hated by napolitan press, honestly i feel many moments out of tune.Maria is divina.
Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, 01/27/1951, Tullio Serafin.
This performance of "Il Tovatore" was criticized a lot by the pressin this time, and the tenor Giacomo Lauri-Volpi was booed! Indignant, Mister Lauri-Volpi wrote an open letter in the press to protest on what they wrote on him, and to say that the Maria Callas's singing is admirable and unique!
Are you sure he was booed and not rather distorted "bis!" shouted too near the microphones?
I can hardly believe there was someone who would have dared to boo Lauri-Volpi after his triumphant rendition of "Di quella pira" and we can distinguish some "bis!"...
But I don't know, I did not read the letter, it's just an opinion...
I'm very sure, it was reported in several Maria Callas biographies. Yes we hear "Bis" but we hear especially "Ouh" which are in the Latin languages equivalent to Anglo-Saxon "Boo".
Thanks for your clarification. I would not have suspected such a vehement critic in the press after having heard the rather enthousiastic public's reaction on the most arias of this performance (except on the miserere maybe) (even shouting "bravo" after lauri-volpi "teco a morire" in "di quella pira"). Thanks again for having dealt your knowledge about those events.
It was so kind of Lauri-Volpi to praise Callas! Now I admire him even more! I mean, I hardly ever heard him sing, but I know he was Corelli's teacher and model.
Amazingly conducted, so interesting and dramatic and personal!!!
Non existent today!!!
