Wow. I've made jokes making fun of this woman. I'm an a hole! I have a new found respect for this woman and wish I had a quarter of the will power and mental capabilities of her!
Helen Keller inspires me so freakin' much. She's one of my major inspirations in life. And I speak the same way as her (speech impairment), which is another reason why I feel I can relate to her in a way. She'll always be an amazing person!
thanks for sharing such an inspiring video:) I learn a lot from this video, it teaches me how to be grateful to God, and stop complaining. Greetings from Indonesia!
My God.. We all sit here and complain and moan about the small things in life, me being one of them. Yet, here we have a woman who was blind and deaf and almost dumb; yet she saw, she heard, and she SPOKE! This video spoke to my heart. We should feel blessed just to be able to watch and listen to this video. We should all (and I know I am) be ASHAMED of ourselves for complaining about the small things! Pull a 'Helen Keller' and create a revolution! Do something with yourself! Much love to all.
Wow, orang buta dan tuli juga bisa sukses, kita harus syukuri kita bisa lihat dan dengar lihat tu Helen Keller udah buta dan tuli bisa sukses jadi BELAJAR KERAS!!
Thank you so much for this video. I have always thought sign language to be a beautiful art. There is an autistic boy with a beautiful voice who sings in our choir. He uses sign language during "The Lords Prayer." Slowly, but surely, I'm learning it. Don't know why, but just looking at Ms. Keller in this video, I feel love for her. I scrapbook a lot and find myself using her quotes many times. What an inspiration she is!! Thanks again.
Astounding. She exemplifies the human brain's imperative for communication. I can't imagine the frustration she must have felt, knowing every time she spoke her ideas were transmitted into a medium she could never experience or fully understand.
Thank you so much for posting this! I had to watch this to write a paper for my ASL class. I am also sick with a bronchial infection and my asthma. I was unable to watch this at school, since I am feeling very ill. This made it easy for me to get my work done at home, while resting. I have to watch 1 more video. Thanks for sharing! I really appreciate it.

I'm not sure if that lady next to Helen is Anne Sullivan or not. But nevertheless, Helen Keller was an amazing woman and her legacy will live on forever.
I loved learning about her since I was in 2nd grade. Now I'm in 8th & she's such a smart woman. I love her. & this is the first time hearing her voice and she speaks so perfectly for a blind and deaf person. Love you Helen. RIP-3
Amazing woman, she speaks beautiful for someone who never heard the sounds before. I could understand her completely with the other woman translating.
@Hochichin Actually Real Helen heard her parent's voice and sounds of birds, and on and on before her sad illness at 19 months. After this illness she forgot about these sounds but later she remembered she could hear as a toddler.
@9CRoC4 apparently her translator put her hand under some water and then signed water in her hand and then i guess once she knew that she was communicating with her she could teach her the alphabet....
@Lp062607 That guy can speak, but if you were born deaf you don't know the language. Helen Keller became blind and deaf. Also, I don't think you should be judging others intelligence. Know* / And* / Know* again,
Both extraordinary women! I have loved both since elementary school, when I became obsessed with sign language and helping those with special needs. I would have loved to have met both women.
I read a biography about helen keller when i was eight years old, and her story has always inspired me. I think anne sullivan was one of the most amazing women in history. You rarely ever see determination and wisdom like hers.
@SlytherinChick95 how could she of learned?look who her teacher was,.Anne Sullivan was just as remarkable as Helen. Can you imagine the patience and determination it took to bring helen as far as she did. Both women are equally remarkable. And yes i am baffled still. It's downright amazing!
Simply amazing! I was watching videos of Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali in awe. Ms. Keller inspires me in a deeper way and to a greater degree. Thank you for sharing this video.
I just watched the miracle worker (1962) for the first time. I think it is remarkable that someone like Helen could learn and speak. It truly teaches us that we can do anything...
How did she learn to sign with her fingers if she cant hear or speak? if i was death and blind and someone just came up to me and touched my fingers i wouldnt have a fucking clue what they were doing...
@jackowacko45 you mean "deaf" and blind. If YOU were DEATH, you sure as hell WOULD NOT know what they were doing.. lol! Just teasing... Lots of people make that mistake!
She's amazing. Probably the most remarkable women who ever lived. she was determined, and look what she accomplished. No sound, No sight, but she did it all. she even wrote a book. all i can say is wow. What an inspiration.
she's amazing. Probably the most remarkable women who ever lived. she was determined, and look what she accomplished. No sound, No sight, but she did it all. she even wrote a book. all i can say is wow. What an inspiration
Actually ,Helen Keller enjoyed an occasional mixed drink or two.....she usually preferred a Martini.
But that fact wasn't too widely shared with the outside world. Because the public liked to think of her as being very pure and innocent. I'm not sure if she ever got drunk....but we have to assume she may have had one too many once in awhile .... just like most people that occasionally drink.
WOW!! I saw a movie about her, staring Patty Duke, decades ago. But this is so amazing to see the REAL Helen Keller. I always knew she was a very amazing person. This is great. Thank you so much.
@IamHelenKeller i also enjoyed dis vid it was amazing i always wanted 2 c her and hear her i never imagined her 2 look that way i always imagined idk somthing else
@chihuahuabulldog As a child, I lived in Russellville, Alabama, about 20 miles from Tuscumbia, where Hellen Keller was born. I first learned about her when I visited her birthplace and then from all the books I chose to read about her afterwards. She lived a life that was not only amazing, but also inspirational. I can't imagine what triumphs this exceptionally intelligent lady might have achieved, had she not had to overcome the obstacles fate put in her path. Thank you for this video.
Watching this brought a lump to my throat. Helen and all of her helpers and companions are a true gift to the world. Not only to the world of the disabled, but to the rest of the world. I feel it teaches us acceptance, compassion and utmost.... love. She was and will always be an incredible woman. Thank you very very much for sharing this with us.
wow...this makes me cry....it's people like her that restore one's faith in humanity...and the funny thing is, everything she says can be understood pretty clearly if you close your eyes and just listen rather than looking at her lips which don't quite make the normal movements...anyway, I would never have had the strength of will or frankly the energy to learn to speak as she did...amazing woman
@IamHelenKeller Thanks. I had only really heard the name and knew a little about her until I saw this video and I thought that it was amazing that she was able to function as she did considering that she was deaf, dumb and blind and that she is able to be aware of those around her and that she was able to communicate and interact with them and I do find it genuinely fascinating and inspiring.
i just wanted to say that helen and anne are my inspiration helen for being the strongest person i had ever known and anne for being the best teacher ever really big inspiration thank you helen and anne
Though I am not blind deaf or mute, Helen Keller has always been a personal hero of mine in that she has overcome life's obstacles.
After watching The Miracle Worker many times over the years, reading Ms. Keller's autobiography, and other bios about Helen, it's AMAZING to finally actually hear the REAL Helen Keller speak with her OWN mouth.
@IamHelenKeller That was the firt time I've heard her and I'm in my 50s. She was an inspiration to all, but the really amazing person in her story was Anne Sullivan.
I don't understand how she was taught the meaning of words without ever being able to hear. There had to be some initial learning process, which I can't understand. I know, she was impacted by an illness and was blind, and deaf from the result, but surely 19 months is too young to be able to comprehend the meaning of words. I'm in awe
@ChelseaKaylene Her teacher would make her feel something, like running water, then on the other hand she would make motions trying to symbolise water so that she would know her teacher was trying to tell her something about it, and then spell out the word on her palm.
It's amazing that she knew she didn't speak clearly. She DOES, however, have a fairly normal "deaf tone". What an AMAZING woman! I loved Miracle Worker when everything comes together. Can you imagine being a part of that? Wow...just...Wow!!
@see4ward - Helen realized she didn't speak clearly because she requested that Anne Sullivan and her other speech therapists, always be honest with her. And to tell her when her attempts at speaking weren't successful. Yes,... the "Miracle Worker" movie, was itself a "Miracle".
i mean, being born with sight and hearing, then slowly going deaf is one thing, so then you have some sort of idea or memory, but poor hellen was born with nothing to go by :(
@danianrulz No, Helen Keller was'nt born deaf and blind, she lost her sight and hearing after an fever illness when she was 19 months old. Because of this she actually had a memory of learning the word "water" before she became ill, which resulted in the incident referred to as the "Water scene" in the play and movie about her, when she in a moment of enlightenment exclaims "WO!", meaning water.
Helen Keller was an amazing woman! She spoke very well for someone who was both deaf and blind! God bless her, and may she always rest in peace. Thank you for uploading this.
Everyone says, helen eller, helen keller. Congrats to Anne for not giving up on the girl! Did you see her roll her eyes at her, i love how she treated her like she would anyone, i'm sure they were such good companions. Congrat Helen, im so glad you knew the world.
@DamiensBabyBear - Yes, Anne Sullivan deserves a lot of credit for not giving up on Helen.
Actually, Her teacher Anne died in the 1930's. This film was made in the 1950's... and The other woman in this video clip is Polly Thomson. ...Helen's friend and companion.
Yes...it's cute how Polly rolls her eyes during the film.
@mesina011 Yes!definitely. She tought the world perseverance, patience and love. She spent her life trying to live a normal life, loving every person she got in touch with and she tought us that LOVE and Intelligence and courage are the things the most important in life."see with your heart"was her sentence. She developed the intelligence of the mind and the heart.A huge person and beautiful spirit.A shining person!RIP HELEN.AND ANN.
@ballkicker200 Helen learned to speak words the same way that you and I learn to speak words.... by experiencing the sound waves and the movement of the speaker's mouth, and mimicking over and over again until she was understood. The difference is that Helen uses her fingers to experience those sound waves and to feel the movement of the speaker's mouth.
She would put her hand on her teachers throat when she said a word and she tried to match the vibrations with her own throat. It was a long and gritty process, but she got through it. thats why shes in history books
This video is beautiful. Shows how one can overcome adversity and make a difference. All they sickos who find it a joke to poke fun at this woman, aren't human. Pathetic, how dare you use your eyes and ears for evil whilst this woman was given none, it baffles me.

I know, she was impacted by an illness and was blind, and deaf from the result, but surely 19 months is too young to be able to comprehend the meaning of words. I'm in awe
ChelseaKaylene 4 months ago
@ChelseaKaylene Her teacher would make her feel something, like running water, then on the other hand she would make motions trying to symbolise water so that she would know her teacher was trying to tell her something about it, and then spell out the word on her palm.

It's amazing that she knew she didn't speak clearly. She DOES, however, have a fairly normal "deaf tone". What an AMAZING woman! I loved Miracle Worker when everything comes together. Can you imagine being a part of that? Wow...just...Wow!!
see4ward 5 months ago
@see4ward - Helen realized she didn't speak clearly because she requested that Anne Sullivan and her other speech therapists, always be honest with her. And to tell her when her attempts at speaking weren't successful. Yes,... the "Miracle Worker" movie, was itself a "Miracle".
Best Regards! : )

i cannot imagine being born blind and deaf :'(
i mean, being born with sight and hearing, then slowly going deaf is one thing, so then you have some sort of idea or memory, but poor hellen was born with nothing to go by :(
danianrulz 5 months ago
@danianrulz No, Helen Keller was'nt born deaf and blind, she lost her sight and hearing after an fever illness when she was 19 months old. Because of this she actually had a memory of learning the word "water" before she became ill, which resulted in the incident referred to as the "Water scene" in the play and movie about her, when she in a moment of enlightenment exclaims "WO!", meaning water.
.. just saying.

The woman helping her deserved a lot more recognition than she got
lewismacfarlane 6 months ago
@lewismacfarlane - That's very true....
Polly Thompson is the woman that is interpreting what Helen Keller is saying.
She was Helen's companion for over 40 years. She took over after
Helen's original teacher, Anne Sullivan died.
But Polly Thomson doesn't always get very much recognition.
Thanks for watching!

Everyone says, helen eller, helen keller. Congrats to Anne for not giving up on the girl! Did you see her roll her eyes at her, i love how she treated her like she would anyone, i'm sure they were such good companions. Congrat Helen, im so glad you knew the world.
DamiensBabyBear 6 months ago
@DamiensBabyBear - Yes, Anne Sullivan deserves a lot of credit for not giving up on Helen.
Actually, Her teacher Anne died in the 1930's. This film was made in the 1950's... and The other woman in this video clip is Polly Thomson. ...Helen's friend and companion.
Yes...it's cute how Polly rolls her eyes during the film.
Thanks for watching!

how did she learn to understand words
ballkicker200 7 months ago 9
@ballkicker200 -Her teacher Anne Sullivan taught her.
Some of the Anne Sullivan videos explain it.
Have a great day!!!! : ))
IamHelenKeller 7 months ago 8
@ballkicker200 Helen learned to speak words the same way that you and I learn to speak words.... by experiencing the sound waves and the movement of the speaker's mouth, and mimicking over and over again until she was understood. The difference is that Helen uses her fingers to experience those sound waves and to feel the movement of the speaker's mouth.
AdIgnorantiam 6 months ago
@ballkicker200
She would put her hand on her teachers throat when she said a word and she tried to match the vibrations with her own throat. It was a long and gritty process, but she got through it. thats why shes in history books
