people give them crap on how they didn't play their own instruments or that they didn't write their own songs but u have to admit they have great voices. i saw them live in 2011 and loved.They may not be popular in rock culture. but in pop culture they should be legends.they were the birth of the boy bands and that's why they should at least be mentioned in pop culture.
They never talk about hoe they were the singers in the early tunes that they didn't play in, or that Mike had wrote a few of them from the beginning.They always sell themselves short.
If Don Kirshner had,nt been so dictitorial he would,ve been allowed to stay on as music supervisor. The Monkees had no problem with Don staying on they just wanted more input on the music.
Don Kirshner was a hit maker. However, if he had been allowed to stay, the Monkees would have done "Sugar, Sugar" and other gumballs and songs like "Randy Scouse Git" and "For Pete's Sake" would never have been done. The Monkees may have imploded but in the process produced some of their best songs.
This was the "Behind the Music" VH-1 shown in 2002,during a marathon block of those docs,which also included,if my memory is right,debuts of The Go-Go's and The Bangles' "Behind the Music" Debut episodes,too.
Peter didn't hate the music. He hated HOW the music was made, that he was only a face for so much of it, and not able to actually use his talent to make it.
It's disappointing to hear Peter say he hated the music. I love it. I still love the Monkees but it was so disheartening to learn how they really felt and all the negative feelings they had about their show/music. While all of us fans adored them, they hated what they were doing. That was disappointing to me. But, I still love em!
Do you know that Christianity is correct? The world around us reveals that G-d DOES exist, and the historical evidence reveals that Jesus Christ really did come to this earth and there is overwhelming evidence that Jesus Christ really did physically rise from the dead. Jesus is coming again and the signs of the end times that were foretold in the Bible are coming to pass.
What's that guy talking about at 3:35? I was 13 in 1967 and Sgt. Pepper blew my mind. I didn't go running to the safety of the Monkees (who I also loved, to this day, even).
No slight intended but, Smithsonian has an even better documentary.
Induction warrented.

The show was a major step foward;
real Rock in a show, longer hair, psychedelia
A true reflection of young people culture, not 'ozzie and Harriet'.
