The amazing level design and playful color palette makes you feel like a kid again, if not just for the reason that it's Mario :) The fact that Nintendo can still make great Mario games is astounding considering the numerous amount of franchises that slowly decline in fun factor over time. Somehow Nintendo manages to make Mario games that are not only just as fun as previous titles, but are even more creative. They're definitely a company you can count on- they actually have standards! lol
Mario Galaxy doesn't need a story. The fact that it has a story at all can be seen as a lark more than anything. As it stands, its simplistic plot is part of the game's staple and charm. Even Miyamoto stated that he intentionally simplified SMG2's plot ovet the first installment, positing that a complicated backstory would only "weigh down the bright and fun feel of the game." Demanding a more complex story in a Mario game is like asking Playboy to inlcude more interesting articles.

It's not even related to the current time period, horses and cowboys were over with for a long time, and I just am asking for an explanation: not an insult.So moving on--personally I think this will take game of the year, Halo is done and over with, and Black Ops, yet awesome, everyone has to admit, it's just the same idea of MW2 with some new concepts and storyline.

And Red Dead is completely different, the idea of Halo is that it's futuristic, in other words: we have no idea what'll happen when we actually reach the same time in history. In Red Dead redemption it's the past, we already know what happened, therefor making the idea bland and dull.

10/10 means perfect. This game ain't perfect. I got it I have about 95 stars and I'm bored with it. I'd much rather play monster hunter tri. That game has the best graphics on wii. wow... people need to understand that it makes no sense to compare game like Mario to God of War or COD. Those games are give a score based on how they compare against other games of the same genre(at least thats what i believe), not against games in general. Its like comparing a cruiser type bike to a road bike. Your not gonna win the tour on a cruiser, but its kinda dumb to get in full gear just to ride a mile to the store to pick up some eggs. This game looks near perfect but what I don't like is the story. It's not because of the lack of story, it's because they recycle the story from the first game. At least take the time for just some narrative originality.

wth theres an add on the side that says save 40 dollars on super mario galaxy 2 at gamestop. i was so excited so i clicked the link. then it just took me to a page selling mario kart wii -_-
mario isn't for the graphics anymore, but they at least could have made the engine a bit better. with the throwback galaxy the boss fell right over the edge with only his feet on the floor and still was hanging straight. that could have beeen a bit better.
I can just imagine, in a year like 2040, people looking back at this game like we do at games like Super Mario Bros. and say "This game changed video games forever." All new platformers will now look up to this game, and have to attempt to best it. Like what SolidEva said, shooting at zombies, aliens, and soldiers is fun and all, but this game definitely deserves all the 10/10's it's been given. Congratulations, Nintendo, you've made another masterpiece. And God, this game is hard!

There was this one guy who brought in about 4 people into a party to tell me how much CoD: Black Ops sucked. You know, I LOOOVE God of War III. But I think the reason why Super Mario Galaxy 2 was rated higher than it was because storyline not only (slightly) hinders gameplay, but it also (slightly) hinders the replay value. SMG 2 has barely any story so it's just all gameplay. Thus equaling more fun and replay value.
@Treyworld point taken, but thats not always the case. i find myself always going back to GOW 3 and trying to beat it on the tougher difficulties, its just so fun! same with FF7, and RE4. i mustve beaten RE4 over ten times, and the story mixed with gameplay still had me hooked enough for another go around! story is VERY important in a game, and your right while it CAN be a hinderance, if done correctly it doesnt have to, and can even enhance the replay value dramatically!
I completely agree. But I think the story is really important for this gaming generation. Back then, games didn't really need much of a plot. They just needed an appealing design (different from graphics), a great tune here and there, a fair learning curve and fun bosses and/or challenges to be a great game. Most games nowadays have become somewhat like interactive movies. Whenever I see a game commercial I imagine playing it, not so much watching/reading it. But I guess that's just me.
@Treyworld absolutely! level design, music, and easy to grasp yet hard to master controls ruled. honestly i find myself running through games like mw2 the first time and being amazed, but when i run back through, i find myself not wanting to play a lot of areas because some of the pacing and level designs pissed me off. its very cinamatic, but once the effect wears off it loses a lot of its luster yknow? same here, for me its all about how the game plays, and how well the story compliments it 2.
I think we're on the same page about that. And don't get me wrong. I love great storylines and plot twists in games as much as the next person but they don't have nearly as much of an impact if you've already beaten the game. It kind of slows down the gameplay because you already know what happens. Which is why I hate it when games don't allow you to skip cutscenes that you've already seen.
@Treyworld yes, again its all about the integration of it into the gameplay. also i guess theres no way to really whittle it down to an exact problem, its mainly on a case by case basis. but the ones who REALLY get it right, those are the classics, those are the ones that really stick out. but getting back to SMG2 i think that its really overrated, and that people are making way to big of a deal about a game that all in all, isnt THAT amazing.
is just testament to the biased nature that seems to develop more and more in this business. it just seems to get more and more apparent every year, but no one gives a shit, because theyre divided up into their own loyal fanbases. maybe im wrong about a couple of things, maybe im just being too picky. but in my opinion something seems to be wrong with people giving this more praise than GOW 3, because frankly im not even a big fan of that franchise, but i gotta say that was beyond amazing.
also am i the only one that finds myself a liitle miffed at the physics system in this game? momentum seems to be next to non existant when you want to use it for finesse purposes, but its just influential enough to fuck you up on a delicate, platform sequence. also why are these reviewers such suckups to nintendo? they did the same thing with LOZ TP, its like they dont dare say anything negative lest they upset the fanbase of nintendo. the fact that this got straight 10s, and GOW 3 didnt...
damn this game is overrated! im not saying that this isnt a great title, because it really is, its just that straight tens for a game, that feels so much like just a really suped up version of the original, isnt enough to get me to say that its one of the greatest games ive ever played. imo it stays way to close to the first one, with essentially unchanged graphics, animations, sounds, and to a certain degree even gameplay. albeit much better gameplay than the first, its still VERY similar...

I own the first Super Mario Galaxy and still play it from time too time.The good thing with Super Mario games is that you can play a few levels,go play something else and then go back to it without missing a step. I'm playing Red Dead Redemption right now(Awesome game) but this will definately be the next game I buy.

I cannot wait to get this game. The first supermario I borrowed from my boyfriend, and he almost had to fight me to get it back! haha!
The game is so easy to get sucked into, and so satisfying to beat!
And not to mention, unlike some games, you can play it over and over and still have a blast doing so.

he said that this game is harder than the first one but the nintendo company even said that they made it easier by giving it a help guide like in new super mario bro wii so if you keep getting stuck then you can go through and also i beat this game way quicker than the first and the only reason you was always on one life was because you never got any 1up lives and you never even mentioned the 2 player feature i think every reviewer is giving it a 10/10 is because 1 person did then everyfollowed

wow... people need to understand that it makes no sense to compare game like Mario to God of War or COD. Those games are give a score based on how they compare against other games of the same genre(at least thats what i believe), not against games in general. Its like comparing a cruiser type bike to a road bike. Your not gonna win the tour on a cruiser, but its kinda dumb to get in full gear just to ride a mile to the store to pick up some eggs. So there my two cents on this, hope i made sense!

mario isn't for the graphics anymore, but they at least could have made the engine a bit better. with the throwback galaxy the boss fell right over the edge with only his feet on the floor and still was hanging straight. that could have beeen a bit better.

I can just imagine, in a year like 2040, people looking back at this game like we do at games like Super Mario Bros. and say "This game changed video games forever." All new platformers will now look up to this game, and have to attempt to best it. Like what SolidEva said, shooting at zombies, aliens, and soldiers is fun and all, but this game definitely deserves all the 10/10's it's been given. Congratulations, Nintendo, you've made another masterpiece. And God, this game is hard!

EVEN IGN AND GAMESPOT RATED THIS GAME 10/10 and in the history of games just 4 games were rated 10/10 (Zelda: Ocarine of time, GTA IV, Metal Gear Solid 4 and now SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2!!)

Look. Reasons aside, people hate this game, people think this game is okay, and people think this game is awesome. I'm proud to be in the latter. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is without a doubt an amazingly entertaining game. I actually played the game again a day after I got all 242 stars. SOMETHING I DID NOT DO WITH THE FIRST MARIO GALAXY. So even if you (want to) hate this game, at least this is the one Wii game that every gamer knows about. Casual, retro and hardcore.

I just bought smg2 yesterday for my son (and me) and we love it and my wife does as well. You know, I LOOOVE God of War III. But I think the reason why Super Mario Galaxy 2 was rated higher than it was because storyline not only (slightly) hinders gameplay, but it also (slightly) hinders the replay value. SMG 2 has barely any story so it's just all gameplay. Thus equaling more fun and replay value.

@Treyworld point taken, but thats not always the case. i find myself always going back to GOW 3 and trying to beat it on the tougher difficulties, its just so fun! same with FF7, and RE4. i mustve beaten RE4 over ten times, and the story mixed with gameplay still had me hooked enough for another go around! story is VERY important in a game, and your right while it CAN be a hinderance, if done correctly it doesnt have to, and can even enhance the replay value dramatically!

I completely agree. But I think the story is really important for this gaming generation. Back then, games didn't really need much of a plot. They just needed an appealing design (different from graphics), a great tune here and there, a fair learning curve and fun bosses and/or challenges to be a great game. Most games nowadays have become somewhat like interactive movies. Whenever I see a game commercial I imagine playing it, not so much watching/reading it. But I guess that's just me.

@Treyworld absolutely! level design, music, and easy to grasp yet hard to master controls ruled. honestly i find myself running through games like mw2 the first time and being amazed, but when i run back through, i find myself not wanting to play a lot of areas because some of the pacing and level designs pissed me off. its very cinamatic, but once the effect wears off it loses a lot of its luster yknow? same here, for me its all about how the game plays, and how well the story compliments it 2.

I think we're on the same page about that. And don't get me wrong. I love great storylines and plot twists in games as much as the next person but they don't have nearly as much of an impact if you've already beaten the game. It kind of slows down the gameplay because you already know what happens. Which is why I hate it when games don't allow you to skip cutscenes that you've already seen.

@Treyworld yes, again its all about the integration of it into the gameplay. also i guess theres no way to really whittle it down to an exact problem, its mainly on a case by case basis. but the ones who REALLY get it right, those are the classics, those are the ones that really stick out. but getting back to SMG2 i think that its really overrated, and that people are making way to big of a deal about a game that all in all, isnt THAT amazing.

is just testament to the biased nature that seems to develop more and more in this business. it just seems to get more and more apparent every year, but no one gives a shit, because theyre divided up into their own loyal fanbases. maybe im wrong about a couple of things, maybe im just being too picky. but in my opinion something seems to be wrong with people giving this more praise than GOW 3, because frankly im not even a big fan of that franchise, but i gotta say that was beyond amazing.

also am i the only one that finds myself a liitle miffed at the physics system in this game? momentum seems to be next to non existant when you want to use it for finesse purposes, but its just influential enough to fuck you up on a delicate, platform sequence. also why are these reviewers such suckups to nintendo? they did the same thing with LOZ TP, its like they dont dare say anything negative lest they upset the fanbase of nintendo. the fact that this got straight 10s, and GOW 3 didnt...

damn this game is overrated! im not saying that this isnt a great title, because it really is, its just that straight tens for a game, that feels so much like just a really suped up version of the original, isnt enough to get me to say that its one of the greatest games ive ever played. imo it stays way to close to the first one, with essentially unchanged graphics, animations, sounds, and to a certain degree even gameplay. albeit much better gameplay than the first, its still VERY similar...

I own the first Super Mario Galaxy and still play it from time too time.The good thing with Super Mario games is that you can play a few levels,go play something else and then go back to it without missing a step. I'm playing Red Dead Redemption right now(Awesome game) but this will definately be the next game I buy.
Anybody who doesn't have a Wii yet, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are enough reason to go and buy one asap.

I have xbox360 and wii. I have to say that i like the shooters and graphics on the xbox 360, but come on guys nintendo will always be god. N64 was like the best console anyway and mario is about gameplay not about story. Mario galaxy is just one big explosion of fun and smg 2 even more!!! Games re about fun not about graphics in my opinion. This game really deserves to be GOTY!!
