this the most butch music ever ...you could work as a lavatory attendant in a disused stadium but if this was playing as you put your aftershave on in the morning you'd feel like Caesar going to work...
This is great. To the captain, I actually projected this (was the projectionist) at my high school when I was about 15 - spliced the reels together and all, we had ancient arc projectors. I was just learning to play guitar and, though I sucked, I got one of the real musician kids to help me figure this song out. I know the chord progression to this day, well, not that that part is hard anymore, but I can still hear this song in my head and I'm 47.
Had the cassette years ago, and my friends dog chewed it up. That was a bummer day. I replaced it with the import version of the CD. Life is good now!
Few things I like better than a dirty kick your balls up around your throat instrumental! Thanks for posting Captain. One of my favorite Mann films and Caan is stone cold as Frank. For those who may not know, this is Mann's first attempt with the "Master Thief" storyline. He went on to film "Heat" some years later. For me, "Thief" is the better film. Although, by all means see them both if this type of film appeals to you.
Brother you are SICK...that is the most incredible fucking video tribute i have ever witnessed.....I dont have words....as you can tell by my message....WOW
@CaptainJimKirk Man. Let me tell ya. This is just fantasic stuff that the 80 we're made of. A cool move and Awesome soundtrack by german band. I had no idea that Tangerine Dream is a German Band. So cool And of course this is my favorite song off of this rare LP Cassette. Juat a quick question. this the orginal LP and Cassette versions of the song. Does it actually start as the music in this video. PS. Awesome Video by the way.
to correct what i posted earlier james caan used has an adjustable rear sight that was standard on the gold cup models .and just to inform those that dont know much about them the gpld cup and government models both had 5 inch slides not 6 inch .
the gun james caan is useing is a government model not a long slide just watch the video when he reloads it or watch the movie when he gets it out of the trap door in his car .i collect colt 1911s of all sizes and calibers
@gunner1780 You see Caan with a Gold Cup National Match, a Combat Commander, and a Jim Hoag custom long slide in the move. When Caan does the tactical mag change at the ending scene he clearly has the 6" long slide in his hands.
one of my favorite movies and scores. i was 16 when this movie was at the theaters and it was so cool. manhunter, miami vice, last of the mohicans, and heat, all movies i was drawn too. when i really started paying attention to detail with cinema i realized micheal mann was the common thread. mann's influence on the scores and the artists that perform them are evident. confrontation is the best of them all. when cann cleans house in the front yard with the 1911 longslide it's awesome....
What a cool, cooooool vid!!! I just watched THIEF for the first time, n' immediately bought the soundtrack...but this incredible tune ain't ON IT!! I love it to DEATH, n' would love some help finding it! MUCHAS GRACIAS, n' much love to you, Cap'n Jim!
@superserge76 - It's a Jim Hoag custom Colt 1911A1 Series 70. Technically, it is a Colt. But it's custom modified. The one he uses in the film is based on the Series 70 1911A1. You can tell because the Gold Cup has the flat mainspring housing, while the A1 is arched. Hoag took and lengthened the slide (I think it's a 6"), squared off the trigger guard, and put a skeletonized trigger on it, and target sights. In some scenes, he is using a regular Colt 1911 Gold Cup National Match Series 70.
Damn this film rules... Really under-appreciated, I'd never even heard of it until I bought it on a whim because it was directed by Mann. I think it might even be my favourite film of his. This ending's superb.
I have wanted to find out what kind of weapon Farinas character is using since I saw this in the theater in 81. Is that a box fed shotgun or what? Anyone with the answer message me plz.
Hey WardenGordon, sorry but this trumps Comftorably Numb for pure emotive playing. Similar chord progression, but so what? Sometime's Gilmour's playing is a little too clean, doesn't let it hang out enough.....in my opinion of course...
I`ve watched this lots of times, and still enjoying it. It`s exhilarating. A great combination of edited film footage and classic rock instrumental soundtrack. Thanks for posting it.
@WardenGordon I never heard of this movie, I just caught the end of it on T.V. and thought the song sounded like "I'm So Afraid" that Lindsey Buckingham did with Fleetwood Mac, I was almost sure of it! I totally get the "Comfortably Numb" thing, though!
Hey socalltd! Thanks so much for your work digitising the original track. As well as making this video with it, I've passed on the mp3 to a few people who - like me - couldn't find it for love or money!
Yes... This track doen't come in the OST. It's marvelous!! The music and the sequence in the movie where it appears is pure grandeur!! Thnks for posting!
I have been looking for this song for over a year. I never considered youtube. Where can I get this from as the UK album doesn't have Confrontation by Craig Safan.
When they blew up his house, they actually burnt it down. The lot was so big, they put three houses up in its place. The house was in my neighborhood.
Unsure of the band that did this - it is not Tangerine Dream and definitely not Edgar Froese (please!) but Safan is the lead and backing guitarist on all guitar tracks.
Anyone got the original session footage from 1980?
I've seen it once but never since - perhaps it'll turn up as a DVD special feature if they ever re-release the movie.
Love the trippy keyboard/synthesiser - like Vangelis or Kitaro.
when you buy a cd and it doesn't say confrontation as the last track - is it differnet to the original version?

Shit, how many times did Mann have a composer rip off Comfortably Numb for the climactic theme of one of his films?
WardenGordon 2 years ago
this is '81....duh??
lesleyblood1 2 years ago
To your duh, I say huh?
And when Manhunter came out, it was 1986. Graham's Theme was also a riff on Comfortably Numb.
