This is awesome, but the part that is just ruining it for me is precisely in the most interesting part, the solo, beginning at 2:14...I just can´t enjoy it with that bearded idiot behind Hellborg, the one with the sweater, trying to watch himself on the monitors, watching the camera, the monitor, the camera, the monitor...I can´t stand it, AAAHHHHHH!!!!!!
Oh sorry, JH? You meant Jan Hammer? Yes he fell out with him. He and Goodman wanted to be rock stars. Billy didn't take it that way, too experienced and used to hard times. JM played with Billy afterwards many times. The others he never did.
BC fell out with Mclaughlin in a big way in the 80's. According to Cobham, he was supposed to go on tour with the Mahavishnu band and was at the point of packing his bags when JM dropped him in favour of Danny Gottlieb. Thankfully they seem to have made things up as they did a set in montreux recently.
Has someone ripped the audio, 'cleaned' it up using 'Audacity' or some other sound-tools program, and re-dubbed the video? Sounds very good, except lack of synchronisation is a little bit of a bummer.
in 1908 a lady named sally rusa was in the woods looking for a dog until a ghost came and killed her so if ur reading this u will find a bloody body in your closet hanging there haunting you and will kill you and ur family and if u want to stop this just sends this to 6 videos in 30 mins or this will happen good luck
I loooove this video. I watch it all the time. You should search MP3 of this gig on the internet, it's easy to find. There are about 7 tracks and really enjoyable.
the part that starts at about 05:24 is just amazing, incredible feeling, love them, I've actually met Jonas hellborg at the anually swedish guitar show "Fuzz guitar" , he played with Mattias IA Eklund from Freak Kitchen
I met Jonas at Shawn's funeral and all that I can say is that he has an Obi one Canobie like zen-ness about him that can't be explained. A perfect gentleman and amazing musician to say the least. I sat in my pickup in front of Shawn's grandmothers house on Stacey St in Memphis with Shawn for about 1 hour listening to him talk of Jonas. I have kicked myself a thousand times for not having a recorder. An amazing conversation from a true genius as well as one beautiful human being.
This is the inherent problem with this great music. It intimidates people. They feel like they have to cross their arms, rub their chins and think, when they should just try and feel it. As a guitarist that's how I began to listen to this, but now I get it. This stuff rocks. Let go and rip!
music like it should be heard. Love the bass and John's interplay and vica versa. No room for any other instrumentation. Not on this one. Just let it be. Thank you for the upload into bliss.
Haha, don't be discouraged brotha, be inspired! Nothing wrong with watching another dude hand you your own ass once in a while. Keeps the ego in check!
Was part of the tech crew that set up for a Mahavishnu Orch concert in 1973, and during the sound I stood and stared in front of him while he played solo for the audio folk. After a bit he stopped and asked if he could help me with something. I merely asked him how he did what he did (you have to realise that over thirty years ago his work was so advanced and beyond the reach of all others). He answered that he knew all the musical scales and PRACTISED!
Did lighting design and light board ops for a SHAKTI concert in about 1978 at San Diego. JM was reserved but intense during sound check. However was very particular about his sounmd and was very vocal about audio feedback. Really critiqued his sound person.
I have been with JM during a sound check in 1992 in Getxo Jazz Festival with JOHN MCLAUGHLIN TRIO (with Di Piazza) and I was surprised for John´s modesty and normal way of being! I think one thing is to be a kind person and other thing is working everyday during 2 ó 3 years making music. I´m not always in the same humour with my group´s musicians. Remember how Lennon and Mcartney made some time bad words one each other.
There was that reportage on Mezzo TV about Jonas Hellborg, with interviews and stuff, and Hellborg told few things about McLaughlin. I have that thing recorded on VHS (pity i don't have possibility to get it onto my pc, cause it's a great thing), and he was quite warm for John. That may be McLaughlin's problem for the most :)
I haven't heard about bad blood between JM and JH but to be honest I wouldn't be surprised. JM has fallen out with Billy Cobham, Jan Hammer (both unresolved after all these years) L.Shankar, John luc Ponty and Kai Eckhart at some point or other. He's said to be a great guy but is renowned for being stubborn as hell.
Odd isn't it? On one hand, I always read from reporters and articles on how sweet and kind JM is. When doing interviews, he always makes the interviewers laugh. And people always describe him as a cheerful and modest person.
But on the other hand, it seems that a lot of the people working with him always come out with a story or two about bad relations. Santana for example, wasn't on good terms with JM until recently.
I don't think it's ego. I think it's him always wanting to have things "his way or the highway".
@bazonics why is Shankar mad at him? Also, though I know your comment is 3 years old, I'll have you know John played with Billy this year. It was cool
@prasiddha John Francis Pastorius the 3rd, didn't like John Mclaughlin, either, Hellborg & Pastorius got along well {who legacy is More Legendary? John or Jaco? hmmmmm... ?}

I read that John Mac and Jonas Hellborg don't really like each other now. I read that JM was too domineering when JH was in the new Mahavishnu.
Can anyone help clarify this?
