Get a vuvuzela and try to do this though the mouthpiece at close distance (not tighly pressed against lips) and you can play melodies on that thing sounding like Louis Armstrong. Jug bands did the same on watering cans etc. (I am writing a vuvuzela music FAQ.)

Its REAL When a real saxophone is played, sound is created by vibrating the lips in resonance with the reed, and then pitch and timbre are varied by changing air pressure by opening of the reeds. A human trumpet, as this guy does, and he is good at it i might add, creates the sound using the vocal chords in the lower part of the throat. Closing the mouth or creating a seal with the uvula and your throat (or both), produces the resonnance, and sound variation is controlled by lyrinx contraction

the reason he opens his mouth and the sound still goes is that the video is not synced perfectly with the sound. You can tell that if you watch him speak in the beginning. His lips and the sound don't match up.

i can understand how some people could think he's faking it, not cause of how it sounds (cause it still sounds like it's coming from a person), but because the video makes it seem like he's breathing while the sound is still going. however, on closer inspection, the video and audio are just out of synch the entire time :)
