Great song . Saw them at Glasgow Apollo 75 or 76 after Arms of Mary was a hit . Vastly under appreciated singer / songwriters . This should have been a huge hit for them .
Many thanks for posting this vid - I had their Lifeboat album when I was a kid. Loved it... then lost it. Of course:) I always thought this was their finest achievement - immortal.
Terrific. Heard it getting played on Stewart Hendry's Radio One programme on Saturday mornings, and had to go out and buy the album. Got to love every song on the album as well.
Here's one which flies in the face of the so-called modern-day "song", it has no fast guitar playing, no agressive vocals, no gimmicks, just solid harmony, beautiful voices and a melody that lingers in the mind. A lazy lil number with a simple structure. Pretty awesome really when you know that this was '72. :)
Just a beautiful song --Loved this band --brings back so many happy memories of when i was working away from home a lot in the early seventies.........
@stolencar100 I was trying to explain the meaning of the title of the song which has puzzled many people you fucking moron, but as you're so smart you knew the meaning anyway. And just to further your education I'm an athiest.
The Pie: This is an oath sworn on the King James II prayer book, and is considered one of the most unbreakable oaths to Scottish catholics. Its a beautiful song and the title gives it much more meaning once you know its significance.
Hi.Thjis song brings back many memories.Dont know why it was not a big hit!!I searched for it for years and when I asked for the pie I got some strange looks!!just love it.
One of the most beautiful songs EVER! I always loved the Bay City Rollers cover of it but the original is just as sweet! So glad I found this. Too bad it isn't more popular.
The best version of this song is this one. I have uploaded the '78 reworking When I Say I Love You and made sure your video link is added to my notes. Five stars for a wonderful track that I played over and over and over again. Cheers for the memory. Steve
found this by accident and had been looking for it for years as used to play it constantly when a kid and lovelorn...must say that i am disappointed! mind u, i am lovelorn again so maybe lyrics will still ring true, lol
It's always a mystery to me why this wasn't an absolute mega hit in 1972! At the time, I remember when I mentioned it to people they said "Oh yeah, you mean American Pie". Perhaps that was the problem. Off the great first album, which Island didn't really push that much. To Rod Stewart's credit he started raving about the Sutherland Bros very early on and wanted to record the excellent "I was in Chains" off the same album... Great, great band.
Yes i have! Wifey and i along with our good friend Andy Broad (where are you ?) used to follow SB&Q round the East Anglia college circuit in the mid 70s . Still brilliant now even after 30+ years.
I'm trying to get 'Moonlight Lady' anyone manage to post that please? Have a listen to 'Where Lies Your Soul' great song also. These guys just came out with so much good stuff and as someone else on here said, they should have been huge!
We probably all (or maybe not) associate songs with events/ periods in life that remind us of the past, and this song does, damn good memories, and I wont mention her name, we r talking 30 yrs!!!, not forgotten, It was vinyl in them days, can u get it in CD?
Wow thanks for putting this on,I love this song.I used to have the album ,eons ago , and it got misplaced .......I had been trying to find the song for so long. very underrated band...they had a lot of good songs. Thanks again.
One of my all time favourite songs. I don't know why it isn't better known. It's much better than the Sutherland Brothers best known song 'Sailing', although their original version of that is much better than Rod Stewart's. Good songwriters.
Long time since I heard this, reminds of our first flat in Byres Road, 4 lads having fun, great band.
