i'm a rider in LA, and split lanes too, but the video above is SO dangerously stupid. I never split lanes when traffic is moving faster than like 30mph, much less splitting on the freeway going ... what? 70mph? you can see the rider nearly got sided by cars, not seeing him because he's coming so fast. Mad skillz, but still a very dumb thing to do.

Lane splitting is legal in CA. Not sure in other states but you got some real balls for doing that in heavy traffic. I am on my way to get a bike license just to ride and avoid traffic like this.

ive done this a lot in washington and idaho during rush hour, it looks worse on camera than when ur actually doing it. and if the regular traffic is only doing 50mph then doing 60 is nothing, this guy aint doing anything to crazy its the lense on the camer he is using that makes it seem like a crazy fair ride!

This is something more than lane splitting. I don't think a cop would like this kind of riding even in California. People changing lanes, or opening a door are going to get you. Just a matter of time. I wouldn't lane split even if it were legal, except to perhaps to ease around stopped cars at a light to get to the front.

@jessewoodrow Hey Jesse, welcome to LA. It's legal on both surface streets and freeways. It's even legal between the parked cars and traffic so long as its not on a bicycle lane. Of course you have to be extra careful with parked cars opening their doors, but then again so do bicycles. Be safe and have fun.

once on freeway I-5 i got pool over for lane splitting by motorcycle cop , i was lucky he just gave me warning... i have read couple of times on (ocmoto.com) that motorcyclist has got tickets for crossing car pool lane line (double yellow )

if you are going from 1st lane to 3rd lane or you are switching lanes so thats crime in LA...

BUT you are considered a vehicle so splitting double yellow carpool, illegal. if a car cant touch that line neither can a bike. i know, ive gotten a 400 ticket for it, and a warning from another cop ( the warning was a pist off cop on a loud speaker haha). there is no lane splitting parked cars or against the curb (passing on the right)

@jessewoodrow welcome to la!! been riding for 6 years on street, there are no laws prohibiting lane splitting BUT you are a vehicle so same rules apply as cars, there is no double yellow carepool lane splitting. ive had a warning and a $400 ticket (not a $1000 fine). cars cant cross it neither can a bike. no splitting parked cars or against a curb (passing on the right) and you have to do it safely. about 10 mph faster. anything more its a wreckless driving ticket. good luck, be safe.
