As for your past problems with Linux, I understand, but I have never had anything like that happen, and it is never a pain in the ass. If you cool it too much water (hell, even ice) will form on the cpu, thus killing your system. That is the real reason why you cant cool your CPU too much.

that and a motherboard will simply refuse to start up if you cool it too much. Also unless you have a stupidly expensive cooler there shouldn't be that issue, I mean you get phase cooling and LN2 both of which can cool it lower than -50 degrees.

True. WC is really a waste unless your spending the big bucks. High end AC is often the same or better then entry level WCing.

Chris should of asked what CPU he was using and known the max FSB, volt etc.

Guys - all processors are different. The safest overall method is to overclock in steps, test the stability each time in all your most important applications, perhaps even run a benchmark like Sandra or 3dmark. Step it up until you get an unstable run, then throttle down one step.

Remember it's nice to be on the bleeding edge - as long as it's not your wallet bleeding.

A 400 mhz bus with a multiplier of 9 should not be a problem wih most new intel cpu's. I run a c2d e6420 at that speed with the stock cooler with no problem. Try increasing the cpu voltage and bus voltage by .1 volts and make sure you dont have your ram running too must faster than it is rated for.

Overclocking is not raising the voltage, but it is part of the process. OC is playing with Front Side Bus and Multipliers (if your CPU is unlocked) in order to get a higher clock speed.

If you want a Mac, but cannot afford the newer models, look into refurbs. For example, I just go an iBook G4 for $400 because I needed an Apple laptop but couldn't afford a Macbook. Sure they're not modern and have limitations, but they're flow-blown Mac's.

Definitely. However I would double check what I needed the machine for. Video editing and such would be a bad idea. But Photoshop and such would be decent on a machine like the iBook G4. No games though, at least in my recommendations. Anything is better than running Vista... really I'd rather run an iBook with OS X 10.3 than Vista atm.
