The Glen Coe Massacre was not a simple Campbell v MacDonalds - it was far more political. If you knew your history you would know this! The Campbells were used as a scapegoat! John Hill. The scapegoat was Campbell of Glenlyon who was in charge of the action but he was well down the line of command overall. I have Scottish blood on both sides of my family. My father's come from Clan Donald, and my mother's from a sept of Clan MacLaren. So it was completely ironic that the new girl from work came over and she happened to see my sash. I have Scottish blood on both sides of my family. My father's come from Clan Donald, and my mother's from a sept of Clan MacLaren. So it was completely ironic that the new girl from work came over and she happened to see my sash. She kinda laughed and looked green and said "You're going to hate me now" I asked why, and she said "I'm Campbell" And we stared at each other for a moment, and I kinda laughed and said 'Well that's the only problem you've got!' and I hugged her. I think I shocked her!

The ill will toward the Campbells over the massacre of Glencoe is not entirely justified. As noted in this ballad; the massacre was at the order of King William III and was carried out by the King's troops.
Animosity toward the Campbells may be due to the fact the troops were lead by Captain Robert Campbell, although historical documents show that he was coerced with threats that he would be charged with treason and executed if he failed order the attack.

The last Henderson Chief at Glencoe was Dugald MacHendry. The chiefship passed as a result to his daughter's marriage into Clan Donald. Her son, Iain, established the MacHendrys as the hereditary pipers for the MacDonalds of Glencoe. At the time of the Glencoe Massacre, the Hendersons were the bodyguard and pipers for the Chief at Glencoe. I am a Hendry and proud of my heritage.

officers or Highland Chiefs within the Prince's army wanted to invade England as a hostile force either. They only did so once he'd assured them that the English would rise in support of them. When it became apparent that he was in fantasy land they headed back for Scotland to make their stand there.

there may have also been some Highlanders in the normal Scottish Regiments some of whom (eg Royal Scots, Royal Scots Fusiliers, KOSB) were at Culloden. the whole idea that it was a Scotland v England is a misnomer. It was the last of a series of civil wars within Scotland itself (and within the other countries too). The fact that, except for the ill-fated manchester regiment, the English Jacobites didn't rise made it more of a Scottish issue but Scotland itself was divided. None of the Scots

Then there was the Black Watch who were basically at that time still all Highlanders. Most of them were at Blackheath outside of London protecting it from a possible French invasion. The Ind Companies were campaigning throughout the Highlands and I don't think they were at Culloden itself though some of the Militia were. Plus of course

English monarchs. The clan power struggle was won by the Campbells simply because they were in general loyal to the 'Scottish' crown whilst the MacDoanlds (heirs to the Lord of the Isles) saw themselves as rivals to the said crown. The Argyl Campbells only initially fell out with the Stuart monarchs when from their base in London they launched invasions of Scotland to try and force Anglicanism on the Scottish people. ie the so called Bishops Wars which kicked off the civil wars of the 17thC.

Incidentally I've lived in Scotland for 50 years and have never seen any sectarian marches, from either of the sides, and it is very much associated more with certain areas.

During the Civil War period (1640s) the MacDonald bards openly boasted about killing 900 Campbells without a sword being lifted in defense. One can only read that as unarmed men, and probably women and children, being massacred. Both clans committed far worse atrocities against each other (as did other clans) than Glencoe. They were in essence all as bad as each other. Why Glencoe stands out is

Many MacDonalds stood aloof and didn't get involved at all but there were also MacDonalds campaigning for the Hanovarians. Of the 18 Independent Companies under Loudon 2 were raised by the MacDonalds of Sleat. Of the others 5 were raised by Macleods, 3 Mackenzies, 2 Sutherlands, 2 Mackays, Grants, Munros, Rosses and one by the town of Inverness. There were far more Highlanders in the Hanovarian
