I saw the original show in 1979. I took my daughter to see it...she and her little girlfriend always danced and sang the songs and when we went to see it; she had actually picked up on a few of the dances that were in the show....
lol she can still sing this song she has song it to me it was one of those aqward moments after she sang it she played the tape with this piece it was wierd other then she sang her part she sang the other parts too... i have met alot of the chorus line pple and alot of them are opposites of the roles they played and YES This is about her Life and what her childhood
this is amazing. i am engrossed in the reactions of the cast. you can tell they are all reliving a seminal moment in their lives, that they were and always will be part of something great. that's why the revivals will never always fall short.
I've seen a lot of Broadway musicals over the years...in NYC when I lived there and in national touring companies during my time spent in other cities (Dallas, San Francisco, L.A.) and bar none, A Chorus Line remains my absolute favorite and "At the Ballet" remains one of the very, very best modern-era songs from a musical. Period.
it really does i love musicals and i found the soundtrack and the libary one day and i was in awe by this song at first i was like hmmm its a watever song but then i listined to wat they were singing and i wanted to tear up espically the maggie part that was the part i always love to sing espically wen she talks about her childhood
I shound this soundtrack at the library too! It was the first musical I ever heard and I really paid attention to every single song because it summed up a lot of my feelings(I was in middle school at the time). The depth they gave all the characters is unbelievable.
lol really wow ur first musical how adorable a good one to start with....i found this soundtrack over summer wen i was going into sophmore year im now a junior lol. my first musical tho that i heard was WICKED lol i didnt hear it in a soundtrack but commerical cuz they were always putting on the commercial since it was new and all i think i was 10 or 11 and the time and everytime i wuld see and listen to that commerical id be like trying to sing the last part of DEYFING GRAVITY lol
i didnt kno wat the muscial was about or anythin i didnt even kno it was a musical or that musicals even exsited lol but i remeber always trying to sing that last part and it was so amazing cuz freshman year i bought the WICKED soundtrack cuz i remebered memories from it and i listend to it and i was in awe lol first song i looked for of course was DEFYING GRAVITY took me a lil to find it lol but i found the spot and i had a big smile and fell in love with the soundtrack =) and that same year i
got to see it!!!!!!!!!!!! i was like omg finally ima see this musical that i longed to see wen i was younger and it was amazing i cried so much i recommend it
really wow i saw it in L.A with TEAL WICKS as elphaba she was AMAZING!!!! lol i saw spring awakeing last month AMAZING also JAKE EPSTEIN from degrassi played the main character melchoir he was so GREAT and so nice at the stage door lol he sighned my ticket and program lol
wow lucky i wanted to see rent over summer too but i didnt get to i saw the phantom of the opera instead cuz as much as i love rent i love the phantom of the opera just a tad more but both r amazing musicals=)
I was unaware of this musical until I saw the movie. Of course, I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it. I didn't think anyone could do the song better than the women in the movie. Man, was I WRONG.......I would have given anything to have been there, experiencing a performance of that magnitude in a small studio like that, as opposed to in a theater. I'm a 55 year old man, and get tears in my eyes every time I hear this song. This version had me bawling...lol Great post
I was in floods of tears waching this. I saw the first mattine of "A Chorus Line" off Broadway before it moved uptown. And this brought back such memories, Well..I just wept.....
The notion of "Sheila's" or Kelly Bishop's character NOT being a good singer is exactly the point. If you know the part, she is an aging "hoofer" trying out for yet another role where she gets turned down. Her time has long passed. Her voice is perfect for the part of the wise-cracking, cynical, but honest & vulnerable Sheila, who represents all those "older hoofers" out there who just want to work because they love the theater and aren't ready to hang up their dancing shoes!
I was watching this with my best friend since I'm preparing to play Sheila and she commented that Sheila wasn't a very good singer and and I was like "duh, that's the point" lol I didn't know, however, that Kelly Bishop and cast originated the roles from their own experiences (Bebe sings about Kelly's actual conversation with her mother). I think that's incredible. I love this musical.
@Kevierae And not to mention that Kelly Bishop IS the character. The show was written in workshops based on these dancers' lives, and it's actually her story - as for all of them. Which, along with the amazing artistry, is makes this song so powerful...
Oh, this is a very very good interpretation of this song...:( i was crying too, cause i just love ballet for a similar reason, and it really brings out the fellings of me....::( i love this and i do love ballet...
i saw chorus line, it was my first live musical. i never in my life then or since have been so moved by kay cole's last note on this song. the whole audience felt the same we were all taken back . there was a 15 second silence that came over all of us, after that moment followed by an explosion of appluse. i have seen several shows since, but nothing compares to that moment.
I just love Kay Cole. She and Baayork Lee (Connie) were in the 1973 movie Jesus Christ Superstar. I had the pleasure of seeing Ted Neeley (orig. Jesus from movie) and Carl Anderson (orig. Judas from the movie) live back in 1995. They were spectacular. Sadly, Carl passed away a few years ago from leukemia. He will be sorely missed. Do we have any sharp eyes out t here who can find Baayork and Kay in JCS the Movie? Thanks! P.S. There's a great video of Anderson singing Gesthemane from JCS.
I'm in love with this song!!! I love this rendition, but the version with Pam Klinger singing the soprano (which is the recorded version on DVD) is even more phenomenal -- for those that haven't heard it, don't leave this planet until you do!!!!!
Aug. 17th, 2008 Talk about a spiritual experience... seeing Kelly, Nancy and Kay- as beautiful and perfect as it gets... Love, Cheryl Clark- "the Shubert Cassie over 3000 performances"
I've always loved this song. It reflected so many of my intermost feelings that I had as a child and also my great love for the ballet. Plus, I have always loved Moira Shearer in The Red Shoes!
That's Kay Cole and she's the bomb!!! I saw Pam Klinger who played Maggie in the movie also play Maggie on Broadway in '87 and she held that big note for ages and filled the whole theatre with that incredible voice though Kay Cole just brings you to tears.
Reading my previous comment back I want to be sure that anyone reading understands that I mean that Kay is quite emotional and heartfelt.A beautiful vocalist!!
Quite a few friends and I had the honour to work with her for a month- she's extremely inspiring and she pushes you to succeed. She gave acting lessons and taught us how to better connect with the character and songs- it was amazing.
Please, please, please post the rest of this classic show...This was awesome...I knew Thommie Walsh and loved him..What a classic video, thank you so much for posting this clip....
Wow, they sound exactly the same as in 1975. Excellent!!!
Note: Try, if you can help it, not to dump ALL your criticism on the revival. There were other companies that followed this original during its fifteen year run that no one ever bitched about. Just enjoy the show, huh?
Absolutely AMAZING! Every Broadway singer could learn a thing or two from Kay Cole. This clip illustrates quite clearly just how inferior the current revival truly is.
Having grown up listening to the OBC, this takes me back to 11 or 12 when I first saw it in LA. Now as 41 year old I see this number from the eyes of an adult. This number and Hello 12 are just amazing and thanks for uploading.
Do you have any other clips of the episode?? They entire original cast appeared on the Phil Donahue show just before it closed in 1990. I would love any other clips!!!
Not only can she sing, but she can dance, too! And this song was actually written about her life- she is singing about herself! That's what makes it even more amazing.
Wow. Kay Cole killed it....years later.
