  • Wow. Kay Cole killed it....years later.

  • I saw the original show in 1979. I took my daughter to see it...she and her little girlfriend always danced and sang the songs and when we went to see it; she had actually picked up on a few of the dances that were in the show....

  • 5:00 Damn, girl still got it. :)

  • @StupidMaddie137 Damn right!

  • i HAVE to learn this song, most horrible song ever! but i like her.

  • No one came closer to the original cast. Ever.

  • I love it.

  • lol she can still sing this song she has song it to me it was one of those aqward moments after she sang it she played the tape with this piece it was wierd other then she sang her part she sang the other parts too... i have met alot of the chorus line pple and alot of them are opposites of the roles they played and YES This is about her Life and what her childhood

  • They are amazing- I loved chorus line

  • I love this song so much

  • are they singing live?

  • I like her voice and it fits the part she is singing for. I never knew she sang..Thank you for posting this......

  • Are they singing live here or lip sync?

  • @wonkavite Why on earth would they be lip synching? They are broadway performers!

  • My favorite musical, my favorite character, and one of my favorite actresses can it get any better?

  • Kay Cole rocks my socks!

  • this is amazing. i am engrossed in the reactions of the cast. you can tell they are all reliving a seminal moment in their lives, that they were and always will be part of something great. that's why the revivals will never always fall short.

  • kelly bishop rules!

  • it's hard to bear how beautiful this is...

  • wow maggie nearly brought me to tears, even before the climax :O i can get the money note in my belt :P lol

they're all amazing thank you so much for posting (Y)

    xx

  • This was AMAZING.

  • I've seen a lot of Broadway musicals over the years...in NYC when I lived there and in national touring companies during my time spent in other cities (Dallas, San Francisco, L.A.) and bar none, A Chorus Line remains my absolute favorite and "At the Ballet" remains one of the very, very best modern-era songs from a musical. Period.

  • such a huge voice from such a tiny person O.o

this song makes me cry :'(

  • it really does i love musicals and i found the soundtrack and the libary one day and i was in awe by this song at first i was like hmmm its a watever song but then i listined to wat they were singing and i wanted to tear up espically the maggie part that was the part i always love to sing espically wen she talks about her childhood

  • I shound this soundtrack at the library too! It was the first musical I ever heard and I really paid attention to every single song because it summed up a lot of my feelings(I was in middle school at the time). The depth they gave all the characters is unbelievable.

  • lol really wow ur first musical how adorable a good one to start with....i found this soundtrack over summer wen i was going into sophmore year im now a junior lol. my first musical tho that i heard was WICKED lol i didnt hear it in a soundtrack but commerical cuz they were always putting on the commercial since it was new and all i think i was 10 or 11 and the time and everytime i wuld see and listen to that commerical id be like trying to sing the last part of DEYFING GRAVITY lol

  • i didnt kno wat the muscial was about or anythin i didnt even kno it was a musical or that musicals even exsited lol but i remeber always trying to sing that last part and it was so amazing cuz freshman year i bought the WICKED soundtrack cuz i remebered memories from it and i listend to it and i was in awe lol first song i looked for of course was DEFYING GRAVITY took me a lil to find it lol but i found the spot and i had a big smile and fell in love with the soundtrack =) and that same year i

  • got to see it!!!!!!!!!!!! i was like omg finally ima see this musical that i longed to see wen i was younger and it was amazing i cried so much i recommend it

  • lol that's great. i've seen wicked twice and i might see it again this year :)

  • really wow i saw it in L.A with TEAL WICKS as elphaba she was AMAZING!!!! lol i saw spring awakeing last month AMAZING also JAKE EPSTEIN from degrassi played the main character melchoir he was so GREAT and so nice at the stage door lol he sighned my ticket and program lol

  • ooo lucky. i saw rent over the summer with adam pascal and anthony rapp...so AMAZING!!! :D

  • wow lucky i wanted to see rent over summer too but i didnt get to i saw the phantom of the opera instead cuz as much as i love rent i love the phantom of the opera just a tad more but both r amazing musicals=)

  • I think the sheila in the movie had a better singing voice but no one can beet kelly bishop in the acting she did in this role.

  • Hahaha!!! i love her and i loved her part on GILMORE GIRLS.

  • I was unaware of this musical until I saw the movie. Of course, I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it. I didn't think anyone could do the song better than the women in the movie. Man, was I WRONG.......I would have given anything to have been there, experiencing a performance of that magnitude in a small studio like that, as opposed to in a theater. I'm a 55 year old man, and get tears in my eyes every time I hear this song. This version had me bawling...lol Great post

  • I so agree

  • i just ADORE this song. all three are just phenomenal. maggie is probably my favorite but Kelly Bishop is fantastic also

  • thank you for posting this!!!!!

  • all three are B R I L I A N T!!

  • holy crap! maggie is phenomenal!!!!!!!!

  • I was in floods of tears waching this. I saw the first mattine of "A Chorus Line" off Broadway before it moved uptown. And this brought back such memories, Well..I just wept.....

  • my god...this is amazing....simply beautiful

  • The 3 originals...flawless!! you can't copy this....ever.

  • TEARS!

I cried so much. How wonderful!

  • Aww everyone had tears in their eyes..beautiful! I looove this song.

  • The notion of "Sheila's" or Kelly Bishop's character NOT being a good singer is exactly the point. If you know the part, she is an aging "hoofer" trying out for yet another role where she gets turned down. Her time has long passed. Her voice is perfect for the part of the wise-cracking, cynical, but honest & vulnerable Sheila, who represents all those "older hoofers" out there who just want to work because they love the theater and aren't ready to hang up their dancing shoes!

  • I was watching this with my best friend since I'm preparing to play Sheila and she commented that Sheila wasn't a very good singer and and I was like "duh, that's the point" lol I didn't know, however, that Kelly Bishop and cast originated the roles from their own experiences (Bebe sings about Kelly's actual conversation with her mother). I think that's incredible. I love this musical.

  • really?!? so the stories that they r singing about r really thier real stories

  • @Kevierae And not to mention that Kelly Bishop IS the character. The show was written in workshops based on these dancers' lives, and it's actually her story - as for all of them. Which, along with the amazing artistry, is makes this song so powerful...

  • Oh, this is a very very good interpretation of this song...:( i was crying too, cause i just love ballet for a similar reason, and it really brings out the fellings of me....::( i love this and i do love ballet...

  • i saw chorus line, it was my first live musical. i never in my life then or since have been so moved by kay cole's last note on this song. the whole audience felt the same we were all taken back . there was a 15 second silence that came over all of us, after that moment followed by an explosion of appluse. i have seen several shows since, but nothing compares to that moment.

  • I just love Kay Cole. She and Baayork Lee (Connie) were in the 1973 movie Jesus Christ Superstar. I had the pleasure of seeing Ted Neeley (orig. Jesus from movie) and Carl Anderson (orig. Judas from the movie) live back in 1995. They were spectacular. Sadly, Carl passed away a few years ago from leukemia. He will be sorely missed. Do we have any sharp eyes out t here who can find Baayork and Kay in JCS the Movie? Thanks! P.S. There's a great video of Anderson singing Gesthemane from JCS.

  • Kay Cole is the best!!!! What a vocalist! She gives me shivers!

  • Doesn't she? This is possibly my favorite song of hers!

  • OMG!!!

I still have this episode on VHS somewhere.

  • This really is one of the best performances I've ever seen...and it's not even in a full theatre! they really were fantastic.

  • omg! I love her ! She is amazing !

  • omg!! GILMORE GIRLS!!! i did NOT know that!! i love gilmore girls and i love a chorus line!!! <3 xxxx

  • Did you know that both Baayork Lee and Kay Cole were in JCS the movie?

  • I love Kelly Bishop's facial expressions. It's like she's living the part at that exact moment.

And one has to wonder how such a booming voice comes out of somcone as little as Kay Cole.

    All 3 are fantastic.

  • What year is this clip from?

  • Nevermind - 1990 :)

  • I'm in love with this song!!! I love this rendition, but the version with Pam Klinger singing the soprano (which is the recorded version on DVD) is even more phenomenal -- for those that haven't heard it, don't leave this planet until you do!!!!!

Pam Klinger sung the HELL out of this song!!!!!

  • All three of them are breathtaking.

I had tears rolling down my cheeks for Kay Cole's monologue.

This is what real Broadway is.

  • It just doesn't get better than that.

  • Wow! I still hate Gilmore Girls but love this...lol 5:00 is amazing!

  • i love this song!! :)

    kelly bishop is amazing :D

  • is this live sung?

    It's beautiful!

  • This clip brings tears to my eyes (especially with all the shots of the other cast members listening and smiling...) Wow!

  • I never even knew she sang this song, wow! I had to go inform my mom, we are HUGE Gilmore Girl fans. :D

  • Now THATS how it's supposed to be done! Wow! Where the Hell is the movie clip?!

  • emily gilmore is so sexy!

  • the power note at 5:06ish is PHENOMENAL <3

  • i would NEVER have guessed that Emily Gilmore could sing and dance so well!

  • Such a beautiful performance... thank you for posting.

  • still, after seeing this a dozen times, am speechless and brought to tears.

  • Kelly..wow. She's amazing.

  • And i'd say...daddy I would love to dance.....what a melancolic melody follows..beautiful

  • I justr posted the entire show, in 7 parts.

  • I was able to see all 7 parts...thanks for posting. How many of the original casts member have passed on?

  • I've always loved this song. It reflected so many of my intermost feelings that I had as a child and also my great love for the ballet. Plus, I have always loved Moira Shearer in The Red Shoes!

  • *shivers*

    this was amazing

  • Who is the woman on the left? She's a powerhouse.

  • That's Kay Cole and she's the bomb!!! I saw Pam Klinger who played Maggie in the movie also play Maggie on Broadway in '87 and she held that big note for ages and filled the whole theatre with that incredible voice though Kay Cole just brings you to tears.

  • Reading my previous comment back I want to be sure that anyone reading understands that I mean that Kay is quite emotional and heartfelt.A beautiful vocalist!!

  • Quite a few friends and I had the honour to work with her for a month- she's extremely inspiring and she pushes you to succeed. She gave acting lessons and taught us how to better connect with the character and songs- it was amazing.

  • This was later then 1975 right?

  • it was like 1990

  • Please, please, please post the rest of this classic show...This was awesome...I knew Thommie Walsh and loved him..What a classic video, thank you so much for posting this clip....

  • Wow, they sound exactly the same as in 1975. Excellent!!!

Note: Try, if you can help it, not to dump ALL your criticism on the revival. There were other companies that followed this original during its fifteen year run that no one ever bitched about. Just enjoy the show, huh?

  • SO excited to see this! Thanks so much for posting it.

  • Please post more from this show,it brings back alot of good memories....I remember watching this when it orginally was on,thanks for posting.

  • I am lucky to have seen them live way back in 1975.. when they were Off-Broadway and then moved on to Broadway to stay.. and make history..

  • It's amazing to see the other original cast members watching, wiping tears from their eyes.

  • This performance is far and away better than the current Broadway revival. How I wish I had seen the original Broadway production.

  • ay ang tatlong bakla!

  • was donna mc. on this show?

  • Hmm, that's a good question. Probably I mean the rest of the cast was there. Sorry I can't answer your question

  • Nancy Lane's voice and articulation are elegant. All three of these ladies are amazing. Thanks for posting this!

  • Absolutely brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bravo to all three of them. Absolutely brilliant. This is how you do "At The Ballet". The original cast members all the way.

  • Is that Mrs. Gilmore?

  • Haha yes that's Mrs. Emily Gilmore :D Kelly Bishopp has always been just absolutely amazing

  • Absolutely AMAZING! Every Broadway singer could learn a thing or two from Kay Cole. This clip illustrates quite clearly just how inferior the current revival truly is.

  • Bravo...Kay Cole was and is and amazing talent. She should be working every season, that's how incredible she is, as was this whole original cast.

  • where was this

  • The Phil Donahue Show

  • I got to meet Nancy Lane today! She's AWESOME! GREAT personality!

  • how did u meet her?

  • That's all three originals? Nancy Lane and Kay Cole, too??? Woah!

  • the blast of 80's clothes and hair scared the crap out of me - but that was an absolutely flawless performance. Oh, to have seen them on stage!

  • Having grown up listening to the OBC, this takes me back to 11 or 12 when I first saw it in LA. Now as 41 year old I see this number from the eyes of an adult. This number and Hello 12 are just amazing and thanks for uploading.

  • Look at those audience members, they look terrified!

  • Stunned!

  • maggies E flat was beautiful!

  • entertaining.

  • Amazing!! I am going to send it to Nancy & Kelly; I doubt they've seen it. Do you have that clip of "And..." from the original cast?

  • i know, i love this show, the revival is just as amazing:D n sorry no, all i have i've uploaded:[ who are you going to send it too?

  • Ahhh yeeeees! These women... such amazing performances. <3

  • Do you have any other clips of the episode?? They entire original cast appeared on the Phil Donahue show just before it closed in 1990. I would love any other clips!!!

  • I would be interested in purchasing a copy. Please provide details. Thanks.

  • I'm DEFINITELY interested in a copy!

  • i cant believe kelly bishop was in the chorus line!!! that is so awesome because i am a huge gilmore girls fan and i never knew that! thats so cool

  • Not only can she sing, but she can dance, too! And this song was actually written about her life- she is singing about herself! That's what makes it even more amazing.

  • Wow Mama Gilmore can Sing.

  • omg... maggie broke my heart. thank you so much!

  • this is awesome. what is it!? is this obc? thank you for posting
