  • You can actually run the Kindle3 firmware on the Kindle2 hardware(with some hacking).

Also, if you hold-down the alt key, the top row on the keyboard becomes numbers.

  • What an awesome organization, I wish I had an old e-book to send. You rock.

  • Thank's for this. I like very much this video!! :)

  • If you buy the Kindle 3G=+wifi how do you pay for 3g? is it a monthly payment, or something??

  • @MsTimelord1994 3g is free... which is quite awesome because the internet can be accessed pretty much anywhere!

  • Len, what do you think of the new Kindle non-touch? I am a little put off by the lack of a keyboard and odd color tone. Is it still made out of quality materials, despite its cost? It worryingly reminds me of a cheap Kobo reader...I look forward to your review.

  • @folkhippy - I was very impressed with the three new E Ink Kindles. The quality and design are top notch. They feel good in the hand. I think it will take some time to get used to typing on the touch screen, but soon it will go as quickly as the physical keyboard, based on my experience with the Nook Simple Touch. Plus the new X-Ray feature is a brilliant new way to see inside your book. This is way more quality than the Kobo, which I also have, and which feels like a toy by comparison.

  • @LenEdgerly Thank you! I am glad Kindle is still made out of quality materials. My concern about the non-touchscreen version is that it will take a long and tedious amount of time to type in notes, but I'm sure I will get used to it. I am glad they came out with the touch/non-touch option; despite what they say, I think a touch screen always takes away some of the sharpness of the contrast (look closely at the letters), and I also don't like getting fingerprints on my beautiful E Ink display.

  • Great video. Thanks

  • Just so everyone knows, the Kindle prices have dropped. The WiFi Kindle is now 114, and the Wifi+3G is now 39 dollars. The Kindle DX is still over 300 dollars though.

  • WIN A $25 KINDLE GIFTCARD. Like "The Fiction of J. Richard Singleton" on Facebook for further details.

  • It looks like you can highlight pdfs, but can you highlight in the ebooks?

  • kindle is over rated... just buy 1 that fuckin reads epub

  • I understand how people love the smell and feel of real books but the Kindle is so amazing. It literally opens up the world to you. There are so many free books available it's just awesome. I'm so thankful for technology every day and the Kindle has only made things better and I believe it will revolutionize books. Once my kids are old enough I'll make sure they'll have thousands of books available to them on an e-reader because I would've killed for that as a kid.

  • I'm waiting for the 4g

It's ridiculous how fast technology becomes obsolete

  • This is great for travellers and students who have tons of textbooks, but for the average reader you can't beat the feel of a book!

  • If you get a Kindle, make sure you get a cover! I like this site bc you can search by style or theme!

    astore.amazon.com/kindleskins0c-20

  • What if you used up all the space? 3g is not alot of space with no SIM Card or external memory... what about space capasity.

  • @cydwill I don't think you can possibly read 3,500 books. That's how many it holds.

  • does this thing have unlimited 3g for other countries? say Singapore.

  • @AJestablished The 3G service is free - no contract - and there is no SIM card.

  • i will be getting the kindle with 3g, woul you recommend an extended warranty extra 50 dollars for 2 years? and when would you expect the next model to be released, i really love this one, i hope they don't make huge changes such as a color display, if they were to do that, then you wouldn't be able to read during a sunny day or enjoy it for weeks. thanks

  • @anilsenturk I have not purchased extended warranties for the Kindle myself, because I always upgrade to the new model. I think Amazon will keep making an E Ink Kindle, even if they add some kind of color Kindle tablet to the lineup. I think we'll see a new E Ink Kindle AND a tablet by the holiday season.

  • I am getting the new Kindle with wifi and 3G in 2 weeks for my birthday :) I am so excited!

  • @AJestablished The 3G is built in and free - no monthly charge. The Kindle also has an unlimited web browser which, though slow, is adequate for getting around. This sets Kindle apart from nook 3G, which has browser only for going to B&N store.

  • EXCUSE ME! AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO REALIZED THIS MAN JUST SAID THERES A FEATURE THAT ALSO WORKS WITH BLIND PEOPLE?

    ...so..the blind read with kindle?

  • can i have your other kindle? the white one :-)

  • Hi, I am really interested to get the kindle. But i would like to know some things about this kindle. one reason why im getting this kindle is because of its wifi support.

does it allow you to surf the internet for eg; facebook/ hotmail and do they charge you if you surf to such sites?

and can you keep mp3/mp4 in the kindle so you can listen to the songs through the kindle?

  • The kindle is nothing but a piece of crud and it's a waste of money. Don't buy one. There's this new thing called a book. You read it and turn the page with your own fingers.

  • Excellent review!

  • Amazon releases cheaper ad-supported Kindle. For details, go to Facebook and search "ereader" to access the ereader community page for the latest news and offers.

  • @caucus100 yeah you can.just hook it up to the computer and upload it

  • Hey people good collection of kindle books i found just visit :

    warezsokol ( dot )com /search / label / kindle

  • @caucus100 Yes! Not a silly question at all. The PDF's can sometimes be a challenge to read on the 6-inch Kindle, because of the font size, but you can increase the font and move around the pages. The larger Kindle, the DX, is better if you are going to read a lot of PDF pages. Good luck!

  • I like it.

  • Will the new one be out by June? And is it possible to read epub books or convert the epub to the kindle format? And can you download books from Project Guttenburg and other sources on kindle (via device)

  • how does it "feel" to read, iam reluctant to buy one purely from a tactile point of view, but i dont want to ut any more shelves up in my appartment for my old books

  • How would the kindle fare for reading primary PDFs? I have a PDF copy of my college biology book and I was wondering if I should buy the book or a kindle. They are both approximately the same price. I'm mostly worried because of the small size of the kindle's screen.

  • @sciroccoguy I also was going to purchase Kindle for reading pdf. Unfortunately if PDF is the only ebook format provided by the publisher, than you will need to get Kindle DX. The 6inch screen is too small to produce pdf using legible prints. Luckily for me I learned the books I read are available in MOBI format which Amazon supports so text flows fine. If MOBI format is available from your publishers, yes get it. if only PDF is available and it's complicated, DX would be better.

  • Great review I loved it! Like :D

  • Hello - I'm just wondering if the 3G network kindle 3 allows you to access browser and check personal emails? thanks.

  • @hotmamas88888888 Yes on both counts.

  • lol. when i first read your name, i saw legendary.... :D i hope i can get the kindle on march 28, my birthday.

  • what can you do on 3g that you cannot do on wireless? Wondering whether to spend the extra money to get the 3g

  • @lovethewanted5x 3G just lets you connect to the Whispernet in places where there is no WiFi, like when you're on the road or at an airport that doesn't make it easy to connect to wifi. If you are mainly going to buy books for your Kindle in your home or office where there is wifi, then you might be able to get buy with the $139 model. I have the 3G and really like the convenience of connection just about anywhere.

  • I'm very glad of my recent purchase of the kindle 3. But, I also purchased a leather case with the light. I just can't imagine carrying this device around without some kind of outer protection. AWESOME DEVICE!

  • I'm considering getting a kinlde. how do you post notes from books to facebook?

  • @WiliamKali Sorry for the slow response. You enter your Facebook username and password and set up your Kindle to post notes to it (or Twitter.) It's pretty fun.

  • when you are not using the kindle (say overnight) do you turn the thing OFF or do you leave it on stand by - At the moment, I just leave it on stand by, so that I dont need to wait for it to load up again the next time I use it - I am wondering is there any technical advantage wherether using OFF or stand by - or is it a case of personal preference ?

  • @akurtula I just put mine in sleep mode when I'm not using it, by moving the power button over to the right briefly and then letting it return to its default position. I leave the WiFi/3G on, because I have several subscriptions - to blogs, a magazine and newspaper, so I like to have them arrive when I'm sleeping.

  • @LenEdgerly thanks, that's more or les what I have been doing, just thought I'd ask just in case, thanks for you help

  • i bought the kindle now and I am loving it - though as you and the manual pointed out, that you can view the highlights and archie books through kindle.amazon.com, that is not working for me. - I can login to the site (which means it works) but the highlights are not showing (i can access them within kindle, but not on the website), and suggestions?? but other than that I am REALLY loving it - thanks to these videos :)

  • @akurtula Are you sure you are connected to the Whispernet either by Wi-Fi if your Kindle has it or 3G?

  • @LenEdgerly that must be the problem, I tried to connect to the whispernet by following online guide but when I go to my Amazon management page - I cant see "Manage synchronization between devices" anywhere, the wi-fi works, the email service works (username@amazon.com) - so I dont know whats going on - As I said the wifi works fine

  • I don't know much about Kindle because I don't own one yet, but as I have seen there is no eBook divice that allows readers to highlight important quotes and take notes on the bottom of each page as we can do on ordinary paperback ones.

  • @rsxsb81 You can highlight passages and write notes with the Kindle, and then retrieve them conveniently at kindle.amazon.com . It's very handy, and I use this capability a lot.

  • @rsxsb81 Really! We can do so on Kindle as well! I'm amazed! I do need to get one as soon as possible.

  • this is one of the best reviews I have seen in youtube, do you know if it you be posible to upload pdfs into the device from my computer, and if for some reason you would not want to buy books from amazon (therefore use it only for pdfs or books from free alternatives) - is it still worth buying the kindle - for example on my phone I can upload by books (epub format) from my pc therefore don't need to buy book that I already have - basically is it worth it if you don't what to use amazon store?

  • @akurtula Thanks! Yes, you can sideload PDFs to the Kindle from your computer. The navigation is not as convenient as it is for a Kindle-formatted book, but it's readable. You can get free books for the Kindle, and also purchased ones in .mobi format or .prc from places other than Amazon. You can't read .epub formatted books, which means you can't read books purchased at Barnes & Noble and Sony Reader store unless they are DRM free. in that case you can use a free program, Calibre, to convert.

  • You seem like such a loveable person, was a pleasure to watch this review.

Are you able to listen to Audiobooks on the Kindle? If so, how is the sound quality from both standard headphones, and the built-in speakers? Does the sound quality differ a vast amount, in comparison to if the Audiobook was to be played on a PC?

    Thanks in advance.

  • @PoshMurder I have not done so myself, but I know you can listen to audiobooks on your Kindle. Audible books are especially well set up for it. With headphones, I bet the sound quality would be very similar to your PC, but the speakers on the Kindle are little and probably won't have near the sound quality of the usual desktop PC speakers. Hope that's helpful.

  • I own the Kindle 3 and I think it is amazing the features are just great I always find a book I wants and I even find new genres that I never thought I would like. The Kindle is great for older people. Very easy to use, my even a complete moron would be able to find out how to access all the features of the Kindle, simply the Kindle is a must to have for anyonw who reads and loves to read and stay connected to friends.

  • People can be so immature. Ignore them. Thanks for the video, I'm thinking I'll buy a Kindle gen. 3!

  • @evilillusionist The Nook color, is worth a look.

  • @marvininniss i really wish fanboys would stop spamming reviews for other products. let peole come to their own conclusion based on lengthy reviews, not some fanboy going "The Nook color is worth a look."

  • Is the Kindle 3 good for older people , for ease of use?

  • @fredlwal Very much so. I'm 60, so that's getting up there, and my parents - both in their 80s - are loving their Kindles. My father likes that he can include his Kindle 3 in his suit pocket and have it always with him when he's waiting at a doctor's appointment or other inconvenience. The controls are sophisticated but designed for ease of use. Older people tend to love to read, and this device is heaven for that purpose.

  • Very good video, ignore these rude people.

  • Haha.. Swallowing.

I got mine the other day. It's great. Does the job

  • MAN PURSE

  • 6 inches is too small I think. I would be changing the pages very often.

  • Nice video, I am looking into getting one, but cant decide between Nook or Kindle 3. this was quite helpful

ps: the internet is full of a-holes like "blang97" there, just ignore them ;)

  • Very nicely done. Please ignore people hurtful comments. Thank-you.

  • You're basically saying that the contrast on the 2nd kindle wasn't that great and also it was too wide and heavy. So what you're gonna say about the 3rd when the 4th is out?

  • @guesarion Point taken. But even though I prefer the latest generation Kindle, I am still impressed with the readability and features of the original and the K2. We have given the prior models to friends and family, and they love them. They do keep getting better, and I'm sure color screen and maybe touchscreen will be coming if not this year then next.

  • Since the kindle 3 reads PDF formats does that mean it can read PDF magazines? how does the images look like on the kindle? let me know

I thinking about saving my money till the 4th generation comes out and see for myself if its worth buying

  • Can you please tell me the type/model and brand name of your leather bag?

Additionally, just purchased a Kindle 3, and can’t wait for it to arrive!

    P.S. Great review :-)

  • has this came out in stores yet ? if so which store u recommend i purchase one at ?and what is the price ranges ?

  • @southbronxboy You can buy them at Staples and Target. Easiest way to buy is Amazon.com and you can keep it for 30 days to try it, then send it back for full refund if for some reason you don't like it.

  • @southbronxboy GET IT FROM BEST BUY WITH A CASE, THESE THINGS ARE MORE DELICATE THEN YOUR PENIS

  • @TehRiamu Not that I know of

  • can't w8 to get mine it is coming in 2 days

  • @blang97 Got it. Thanks!

  • @blang97 pretty rude, retard

  • @blang97 wow, rude much?

  • @blang97 I got an idea! No one gives a shit faggot!

  • Just for your information. You can type in numbers by using the keyboard. You use the shift key on the lower left hand side on the Kindle and the numbers are along the top row of letters staring with 1 from left to right and going to zero on far right side. I thought you might like to know this since it is easier than having to press "SYM' key each time your want to type a number.

  • Man purse, lol

  • can you read the books that are download even if you are not at a wifi access point?.

  • @mzkbell Yes.

  • @LenEdgerly can you put in a a micro Memory to expand memory space?

  • Hi Len. Thanks for the review. I've been wanting to buy an ereader mainly used for studying foreign languages (chinese & korean). I was wondering how to type using chinese & korean characters when taking notes? Can I install additional chinese and korean dictionaries? Thank you for your help.

  • Thanks for ur review, really useful for my decision.

  • thank you for this professional review.

Can you download html pages for web and read them offline?

I would be really interesting to read new off line

  • can you download music onto your Kindle?

  • @LenEdgerly how

  • I have to say the Kindle 3 is the best 'gadget' I've ever used. It's virtually as easy to read from as a real book thanks to the much better contrast. I haven't even bought a book yet - I'm enjoying all the out of copyright stuff that's out there.

  • watch?v=Fo70scy41Z8

  • New Kindle Store

  • And here's a tip for typing numbers on your Kindle.

Hold the Alt key and the qwerty row becomes a number pad.

    So:

    qwertyuiop

    =

    1234567890

    Hope that helps.

  • @guyhowepharr

Thanks so much for this tip :3

I ordered my KIndle Tuesday of this week. Hopefully it gets here no later than Monday.

I really took interest in these e-readers, had to get one.

  • I've had my Kindle G3 for about a month. To answer some of the Qs about G3, here is my opinion.

If you have the money, get it. But don't expect to be browsing the web on the go or reading and sending email on this instead of your pc or phone. The browser is not developed enough to make this anything but a very frustrating experience. The pointer jumps around the screen so focusing on what you want is tricky.

If you really need to use email then G3 can get you out of a scrape. But that's it.

  • Does the Wi Fi use battery power at a slower rate than the 3G? I am loving some of these new features. I have a Kindle 1. So I only have 3G at this point. I buy most of my books via the Amazon website and then sync to my Kindle later. I am unsure whether I would want the Wi Fi only or the Wi Fi and 3G.

  • I have been wanting an E-reader for a year or so, but I'm not sure about the black flash when you change pages. is this difficult to get used to?

  • @MDCporksoda I was wondering the same thing, it seems kind of distracting, but not much different than flipping a page...

  • Do you need a 3G account with an internet provider, or does this give free web browsing?

  • before u do any more review, get a tripod first ;)

  • Props on the manpurse. Righteous.

  • Good review! Are you familiar with the Nook? If so, would you say it is better, too close to call, not as good? Thank you!

  • Excellent review, but I'm still torn between the regular and the wifi with 3G kindle. £40 is a fair chunk of cash for me. Would you say it's worth having the 3G capabilities? I don't intend to buy books via the kindle if I can buy them via my usual PC. Would appreciate some advice from anyone on this before I make my choice. Thanks a lot.

  • @Shindai If you don't plan to buy books via the Kindle and you won't rely on it for web access, the WiFi should meet your needs just fine, IMO. I seldom use my Kindle 3 3G for web access, though on an upcoming trip to Africa I might find that more useful than I do here in the States. Either way, you can't go wrong.

  • @Shindai

I probably don't need the 3G capability, but I have it anyway. I like the idea of being somewhere and being able to browse amazon -- that's just me. Have I ever been in that situation where was on jury duty or stuck in an airport etc.?

    No.

The 3G is a nice extra -- that's it. You can download (WI-FI) all the books you want to your PC and simply move then to your Kindle, so have yourself a portable library.

  • @Shindai I have the Wifi one and I love it. I purchase my books on my pc and USB transfer over to my kindle a lot. Also as long as the Wifi is not password locked you can access the store or web via wifi. I've used starbucks, mcdonalds, and several other free wifi locations before. I also own an original kindle with 3G access and so far I hardly miss it on my new device.

  • @Shindai I have the Wifi one and I love it. I purchase my books on my pc and USB transfer over to my kindle a lot. Also as long as the Wifi is not password locked (assuming of course that you dont know the password ) you can access the store or web via wifi. I've used starbucks, mcdonalds, and several other free wifi locations before. I also own an original kindle with 3G access and so far I hardly miss it on my new device.

  • 139 is pretty cheap for a kindle with all those awesome features. (I bet it would cost more if it was in color. But black and white is no problem 4 me.)

  • can you borrow books (like a library)?

  • @1swimmer100 That would be a great idea :) Maybe if they could be downloaded in a format that expires after a month and could only be used on the kindle and its PC app? I'd be up for that :)

  • Hi. Thank you for the wonderful review. But I have one question.

Can the wifi be used in any countries that has the wifi coverage?

I'm still deciding whether or not to get 3G. I don't need to get a internet connection EVERYWHERE i go. Just some places and I dont mind looking for those places. But I frequently travel back and forth between Japan and canada and I was wondering if as long as I find a wifi hot spot in both countries, I can get an internet connection??

  • @roxymilky I'm pretty sure the WiFi works wherever there is WiFi, in US or abroad. I'll be testing that assumption while we're in South Africa and Botswana on an upcoming trip. Good luck!

  • Yo. Len. It's Doug from Cheyenne, former PSC atty at law... wondered where you went. Nice review. I'm thinking about the Kindle3 and just saw you video review on YT. Hope you are well.

  • can you see the covers of the books you purchase? Does the kindle have like a bookshelf view to see your books by their covers?

  • @faraz1192 Usually you can see the covers. With the book open, go to Menu and then "Go to..." then "Cover." Some books show up on the Kindle with a generic e-book cover that's not very interesting, but most have an image of the cover you'd see on the hardcover version.

  • Omg, I totally love the new changes, it's lighter, and what we love the most, it's more expensive, how can you not pay more for something that isn't even in color, don't even mention color, do we really anything else than black and white, color is overrated. Pictures in books should only look black and white, why do we need detail anyways. Thanks amazon for another great product we greatly have use for, thanks. Btw, nice touch, in not having touch screen, why botter with that. We love you kindle!

  • great review thank you!

  • wut do u think is the best ..Kindle DX? or Kindle 3? and it look small ? doesn't bother me while reading? thnx

  • @FaFFya I prefer the Kindle 3, because the smaller size makes it easier to carry with me, and I mainly read books so I don't need the larger screen size.

  • Can anyone tell me if I can put my own books on to the kindle 3? My friend uploads free ones to me, I mean does it take all the right e-book formats.

  • Great review, thank you :) I do have a couple of questions about highlighting and annotations, and I have not been able to find any detailed explanations of how annotations work on Kindle 3. How are they displayed in the book? Can you view them next to the text? Is it possible to have a margin where notes always who up? Is it easy to find notes later if not?

I like seeing notes in the margin of a book next to the text, it would be great to know if I can view notes and text together with this :)

  • @doenjangnam Highlights and notes appear in the book - the highlights as lightly underlined text and the notes as numbers next to the text. If you highlight the number, the note appears at the bottom of the screen. There is no margin for notes, but you can see all your notes and highlights as a list that you can then use to move to those portions of the book you thought were important. What's very cool is you also can see ALL your highlights and notes at kindle.amazon.com

  • @LenEdgerly That's great, thanks for the reply Len! Definitely helps :)

  • @doenjangnam - Sorry for the delay in responding. Highlights appear in your Kindle book as lightly underlined text. Notes are marked by a number in the text, and when you move the cursor to that spot you will see the note in a window that appears at the bottom of the screen. You can't see the notes in a margin as you suggest (though that's a great idea). It's easy to find notes on your Kindle by choosing "View My Notes & Marks" from within the book. That creates a list of all highlights/notes.

  • That was a fabulous review mate :)

Thanks a lot, I will purchase one this week itself...

One thing to ask was, does the 3g version justify ? Budget isn't a major issue for

myself as this will be my first ebook reader.

Should I spend the extra £39 (I Live in London, UK) for this version or just get the wifi version for £109 ?

    Any replies would be helpful.

  • @nkmistry I don't think you'd ever regret paying the extra money for the 3G. That way you never have to think about whether you have WiFi coverage to buy a book or download a blog or periodical you subscribe to. I have it on mine and am very glad of it. Airports are a good example. Some have free WiFi, but there are usually hoops to jump through to get it. Better to use the 3G to grab an individual copy of the New Yorker or the Economist before boarding and and be done with it.

  • @nkmistry I hope you've purchased your Kindle by now and are loving it! I definitely think the 3G is preferable, for convenience of downloading w/o hunting for WiFi when traveling. Plus, I have a couple of subscriptions that are active, so they always arrive on 3G whether or not I'm by a WiFi spot.

  • Regarding the sym menu - you can continue typing with the menu open and numbers are available by using the alt key and the top row of the keyboard. Still not perfect but I don't seem to use numbers as much. =]

  • Excellent review. Thanks for taking the time to present a thorough explanation of the changes between Kindle 2 and Kindle 3. This was very helpful. I can easily see why the new Kindle 3G is currently on backorder.

  • love your video :D

here is one tip, you could type numbers bu pressing Alt+QWERTY keys.

i've ordered one 3 days ago and it's going to be shipped in 2 weeks!! can't wait to have it my hand :P

  • An excellent demo; thank you for sharing. Also, many kudos on EBooks For Troops. Such a fantastic idea.

  • Very good review !

You sound like a true Kindle Guru !!

I would like to know what is ment by its being ble to handle pdf documents? I want to be able to store a list of names and phone numbers. I have read that the Kindle ap for 0.99 is no good. Can I make a list with my Microsoft Works 9 and via wifi send it to the Kindle?

    Digital regards,

    BiLL

  • @TheBill2468 Bill, the new Kindles have improved ability to read PDF files, but a lot depends on the file itself. On some that I've tried, I was able to highlight text, write notes, and look up words and search. On others, not.

You can create a list in Works, save it as a .doc file and email it to Kindle for conversion to a file that will open on your Kindle. You can pay to have it wirelessly delivered over 3G, or you can get free wireless delivery if you are connected to WiFi.

    Len

  • go nook!! book "loaning", color touchscreen menu, micro sd card slot, removable battery, and epub file compatibility pushes the nook over the top. even though the nook gui runs a little slower than the kindle, i think the nook is the way to go. plus the nook just looks nicer...the kindle looks like a toy with the keyboard(how often would someone really use this) and awkward joystick. the nook's androird hackable os is another benefit

  • @proc5454 i agree with your strong point on nook, but i kinda doubt the variety of books provided that can be used on nooks. I guess kindle stores has more books than nook's.

  • excellent and informative review. succinct and intelligent

  • I want a kindle 3 so bad. They are currently backed up until the 17th of September before they start shipping out again. I know I could go ahead and order one but I hate to put the money out there just to have to wait. So I'm gonna wait until then and try to get one or maybe Target will get some in like they are supposed to. Love kindle on my Android but I think it would be better with the real thing.

  • @AuburnDude40 They don't bill you until it ships, better to pre-order, and you can cancel up until they do ship...

  • Really want to know more about the PDF feature. 1) can you really add notes on a PDF file? 2) If so, when you transfer your PDF file to a PC, does it keep the notes and highlights? 3) as per a post below, would you need to encode/create the PDF file in a certain manner to be able to use notes and highlights? I appreciate any input, thanks so much.

  • Thanks Len, Great Review.

  • Hey thanks for the review! Looks good to me.

  • Great review, thanks for taking the time to make it.

Add some fuel to the fire for us waiting until...sept 17th!!

  • get a tripod,plz.,but a good review :D you seem like a nice guy :D
