Good stuff, belt sanders are awesome for sharpening really dull knives, if you don't like taking what seems like forever to reprofile a chipped edge on harder steels. However, I have to admit that the creepy music mixed with your lack of talking and your slightly slower than normal, meticulous hand movements in the cut test made you look like a serial killer lol. Still good demo though
Never use ANYTHING that produces Sparks,,,NEVER,,,EVER. this blade will NOT stay sharp for long,,,you have tumpered it at the edge,,,it is screwed Yo will have to re-temper the whole knife. And that means an expert needs to do it,,,which will cost you as much as the knife cost new.
@slipdisc If you were more educated about this topic you would know that a good quality belt sander is going to cost a lot more than $40 and you can pick up a smith diamond stone for $20. And you would also know that you shouldn't let your blade get "really dull", sort of the same way you shouldn't let your gun get "really dirty".
My earlier comment wasn't about the discover commercial... It was about the Shamwow guy BTW
@huntmayne223 If you were more educated about this topic, you would know that this belt sander is $40 from HF. You would also know that a good quality waterstone is more than twice that. And lastly you would know that once a big blade gets really dull, its takes more than five min with a stone to bring back a good utility edge.
Thats one way to dot it, but you might lose the temper in the point due the heating of the blade.
But I got say, that is sharp. As a joiner, i use just some diamond stones and leather belts. Does the same thing eventually :p and as long as I sharpen them when it's needed, it doesn't take more time than minute or few
I have seen countless knife sharpening systems, and I've sharpened all my friends knives for 2 or 3 years now. But that knife is by far sharper than any I have seen yet (not including the stupid ceramic knives). Well done man, well done.
when you grind that knife you move so slowly that you are slowly taking the temper our of the knife if you do your passes quickly and dunk the blade in water after every pass or 2 you may be able to preserve what is left of its temper... although the video was posted 2 years a go so i doubt it at least on that knife.
my point was by the design of the knife abuse is what it was intended for. and for most purposes even a dull knife can kill , I never stated at any point that because it was a KABAR that it was any stronger or any less at that . now with that said even a pencil or the tip of the knife can kill so ..the name sake of the knife matters not ;)
I know a guy that used to do this, up until he twisted his blade the wrong way and took a quarter inch deep chunk out of his thin leading edge. KABAR or not, if broken it's useless. I've seen a few blades break, never abuse your equipment if you don't have to. The second you need it most, that abuse will cause it to fail. Plus with all the money spent on belts, you could of spent 15 bucks on stones, oil, a strop, and some polishing compound and had just as sharp an edge.
Interesting as a means of blade up keep . I have been reading comments and i don't think people here understand what the KABAR was designed for , unlike other knives it is more then a cutting tool . it was made for digging, cutting ,stabbing, and stripping and is well known to hold a fine edge even after the fact . this is not a kitchen knife nor a hunting knife , by design it is intended to be used and abused to the fullest .
@efukt82 Being a KABAR does not imbue it with strengths that other combat knives do not have. They are good knives to be sure, but purposefully abusing your gear is not good. The success of the KABAR is due to it's service alone, not due to better steel or anything. Bear in mind that most of our standard military knives are made in the same factory, with the same steel. Hell, most KABARS in service are really made by Ontario anyways, a few are even made by CUTCO.
The real lesson here is from looking at the grind pattern. Notice the grind on the saber bevel is concave (as can be seen by paint pattern). This is not good for long term use and snap of the blade. More grinding to a true V or convex would have take. A little more grinding to achieve. But it was very sharp just wonder for how long and why the paint at the now it will need re grinding to a primary.
@polerigger dont do it by belt sander, as you can tell from the paper cutting that knife was blunt as fuck.
Get a "Furi" sharperner, it has 3 stages and its very fast and the knife will be rather sharp but in the end nothing can beat a good old sharpening stone.
if you really what a belt sander though go to a hardware joint.
@polerigger harbor freight's website. $40, plus shipping. i got one bout a month ago. also bought some 600-1200 grit sanding belts, and leather strop belt from other sites. works great, but takes alittle getting used to. the sander takes metal off rather quickly. (lee valley tools, and pop's knife supplies carry a wide variety of 1 x 30" sanding belts for knives.)
@nationalguard211 Using a belt like this does eat away a lot of your metal and you wouldnt want to do this to any expensive knives but hes using it on a pretty big and thick blade that can handle the stress
@nationalguard211 It depends on how much pressure you apply, and the grit level of your belts. I have the same belt grinder. If you use a very light stroke with fairly fine belts, there is nothing to worry about. This is one of the best ways to get it done.
[sigh] I'm impressed with your tools and shop space. You obviously enjoy a level of technique and expertise that many of us cannot attain. Nicely done!
i was taught basics by a knife exsperert and he said said speed sparding with sparks and flames is terrible it destroyes the blade slow and steady much better
Um, nice edge... I guess, but now that you heated the temper out of it.. it wont hold the edge! That's why you don't use electric machines!! use a whetstone. ! Not to mention you just glopped on paint to a honed edge!

And that's why he air brush paints over it. I think it looks amazing, you could probably slice someone's hand clean off in one swift stroke!
