Sandy was so talented, not only as a vocalist but as a gutarist, pianist and songwriter as well. There willl never be another like her. What a pure beautiful voice.
God, this woman gives me chills! What a resonant enchanting voice. Now I know what Ulysses heard when lashed to the mast while his comrades had their ears stuffed with wax. The Sirens could have sounded no better than this.
Are we not all blessed to have heard such a wonderful voice and how well we will all move through this life "a fair"...................to be shared in peace by us all................go carefully through the night...........and make someone smile tomorrow..........because you will be smiling too !! Enjoy it while you've got it. That's life.
Ahhh, Sandy, love, you passed far too soon.........WHAT A VOICE she had.....God Bless Ye, girl...you graced us all with your lovely face and voice.....Rest in Peace, Dear Sandy......
@chunter5100 you're not wrong about how good Sandy was. The version of this song that Page borrowed was Davy Graham's though, one of my favourite recordings ever
Truly excellent version of this taditional Irish folk song. A Scottish band used this melody some years back and got to No. 1 on the charts with a song called 'Belfast Child'.
I love Kate Bush-her version of Rocket Man i listen to all the time. Sandy's voice comes from somewhere-these postings are so great of both Fairport Convention and Sandy Denny. Who sings and writes like this today ? No one.
@kocean1 I just checked out Kates version of Rocket Man, and just remembered how incredible a musician/singer/performer she is too. Wow is a fav of mine too. Cheers.
padraigpurseal, i suppose it was just my way of saying i like her best at it, and with only her trusty banjo for company ( the longer, five minute plus version). Perhaps i was a wee bit rude- if so i'm sorry.
Sandy Denny is probably the best singer I have ever heard , except for Laura Nyro...whats interesting to me is Jimmy Page used this to create his instrumental, "White Summer"...but not giving credit to where he got it....But, Led Zeppelin thought so much of her, that she sang the duet with Robert Plant on "The Battle of Evermore"...so she became the only other singer Zeppelin ever had....god bless you Sandy Denny..you died way too soon...
this is good very very good, i grew up with this band playing on either vinyl, which i still have or 8 track stereo in my parents vauxhall viva estate as a 5 year old travelling the country to various dog shows. i reckon best song is sailors life, the best version of this that ive heard is by "all about eve" and thats no slight on sandy denny at all.
I've listened to so many bad versions of this song - being Irish , every local would-be balladeer gives it a go with varying degrees of intensity. I met the ballad first in school in poem form - written by Padraic Colum , a "poor paddy crucified by the English , ochon agus ochon" whiner of the old school. But I was in London in 1969 and heard Sandy sing it - and the song became totally magical. She and FC transformed a dreary dirge into a thing of exquisite beauty. The 69 Fairport were unique.
@mickigoe Mickigoe, I'm a latin, and Sandy is unique! Like Sara Vaughn, Aretha, Dianna Reeves, they don't surface very often, so listen closely, too pure beauty, we will regain at least 10yrs of our life!
I love Sandy and Fairport so much - my mother and I listened to Fairport : What we did on our Holiday for the last 72 hours my mom was here. When she (Mom) left the room at 3:00 am Who knows where the time goes was playing on. My Mom loved it too. Angels are as angels do. Peace
That's Fort Perch Rock at New Brighton on the Mersey Estuary. I spent many a happy day there as a boy, and many happy hours listening to Fairport Convention as a man.
I was reared to believe that music is in the ear of the listener, but it is a marvelous song one way or the other as there must 300 differenty recordoings of it .
Perhaps the voice that shaped English folk and pop to follow--a monumental talent, and a sad, sad loss. She would have aged gracefully, singing into her advanced years, I believe.

search nicolas and the iceni summers end. They write beautiful folk music which has echoes of Denny and Drake.

Heart-wrenchingly beautiful vocal and playing. Their maturity amazes me, given their comparative youth at this time.

I think only Sandy Denny and Kate Bush have that mystic quality of being both earthy real women and yet so ethereal. It makes for a magical blend!

Margaret Barry, with just her banjo and a lot less fuss, could lose the lot of them at this.

Sandy is fantastic, and Sinead's version too, but Anne Briggs (1963 version) really does it the best, in the pure old style.

@cybervid07 - an Irish (Brummie) guy called Tommy Dempsey also does a brilliant version, on a rare LP called 'Green Grows The Laurel'.
