  • Thanks for the quiz at the end! I figured that the first song was sang by a woman. Also, I never knew that so many people (or just men sometimes) had a thing for women with deep, dark and/or baritone voices. The Internet (Youtube) is truly a remarkable place!

  • Easy to recognise Zarah at the end - her voice is so special, and amazing! Such a good singer!

  • Does anybody know what is Nina Simone's vocal range?

  • OH MAN u know whos got a DEEP SULTRY VOICE is MARIAH SCIMONE!!! I love all of these women and mariah is just like 1 of them and I know she's the next big thing and youll think the same as soon as you hear her! Im her BIGGEST FAN and even made fan videos for her! youll thank me later

  • Allison Iraheta has a deep voice as well..

  • So Mariah hits both lowest and highest notes? How talented!

  • Comment removed

  • M. Carey is a coloratura mezzo - soprano, not an alto at all and not a soprano a!

  • What is the name of that song by Zara Leander at the end!?

  • omg how could you forget ruth pointer....her voice is the lowest of the low...shame on you ;-p

  • what's the lowest note by a female?

  • I vomited from motion sickness from the all the words moving so fast. FLAGGED!

  • you should check out Ana Carolina... she has a beautiful and naturally low-pitched voice /watch?v=JqcSvw376_8

  • the scrolling really hurts my eyes >.< should put a fade in and out instead of scrolling.

i can sing lower than all of these chicks and i have an awesome voice :D hurray for bedroom voices!

  • PETER STEELE!? WHAT. Omg. <3

That man. May he rest in peace, though.

  • It was very easy to hear that Zarah Leander was singing just before Jussi Björling, their voices are both distinctive.

  • Охиреть! Конец видео мне больше всего понравился!!!

  • cher's voice is deeper than justin biebers

  • nice female choice, wrong songs. varah vaughan?

  • how bout Charice ??? I thought her voice is quite heavy ...

  • you should have included Sarah Vaughan, she has a darker voice than any of these singers.

  • @TheCmelmoneyman

Shit! This is as deep as Zarah Leander. Both are elder women though.

  • you know, even though she's not very known, I would always mention Lisa Gerrard. Could you please take a look? I don't know if you put it in other video, but I've listened lower notes coming from her than the darkest note you have here jeje, just a recommendation. If you want listen to that, listen to yulunga ^^.

  • What about Sade?! I would say she has a "dark" voice... I dunno man.

  • janis joplin

  • anne murray and karen carpenter has a dark voice

  • where is Lisa Gerrard and Diamanda Galas?

  • the thing is when Toni does that scary darkening to her voice its a technique her actually voice isnt that deep.

  • kronblom98, that Mariah bashing was unnecessary. You imply that she "fakes" and "strains" her voice "to sound dark" as opposed to Toni.

Firstly, You should get the knowledge what "dark" means, because you confuse vocal timbre with vocal range. Mariah covers Toni's lower range effortlessly. It's natural for her since her speaking voice is low.

The thing that differentiates them is vocal weight. Toni has exceptionally heavy voice.

  • this being said, Toni's natural voice is more like this

    watch?v=xkHwdQzwnjA

rather than what you've put in the intro, The piece You used comes from a song "I Wanna Be" where Toni went much deeper than regulary.

She is not the lowest female voice in the world. She's just the sexiest contralto in showbiz :)

  • No, I don't confuse vocal timbre with range but I find it hard to separate "dark" from "heavy" and I have never heard of vocal "weight". Please educate.

  • Yes you did confuse all 3 terms.

If you need example, Brandy's voice is dark, low and light at the same time.

  • @sandrakeller2 Dark, low and light at the same time...now that is confusing.

Anyway, in technical terms what does make a voice "heavy"? Is it bandwidth or centre frequency? Just to suggest that we are talking about the same thing I would say that both Toni B and Tanita T have a "heavy" voice (or harsh for that matter).

  • @kronblom98 Not really, her voice is naturally low, with a dark, bit non-heavy tint to it. So that classifies her a s a lyric alto, whereas someody like a Jamine Sullivan who's voice is 'heavier' and more thick is a contralto!!

  • @sandrakeller2 you silly. A voice can't be dark( =thick =heavy )and light at the same time. Brandy and Mariah have husky, light voices. Husky - that's what it is.

BTW Mariah's voice doesn't sit that low but she has good lower extension to her range. She supports these notes nicely and can phrase down there endlessly She's an example how things should be done.

You are right that Toni's voice is heavier plus it sits low.Contrary to kronblom98 I think she fakes her tone sometimes.

  • well mariah carey is really 1/2 white 1/2 black...i love toni braxton to the others i really gave the music a chance to see if i would like there music...i dont really like Cheers music but i got nothing against

her i think she would be a wonderful lady to just chill with

  • Mariah Carey is an Contralto...just like nina simone and Toni Braxton and so forth

  • love cher!

  • Need to add Etta James, Sarah Vaughan, and Rachelle Ferrell

  • mariah is not an alto but she has the capability of hitting low notes even lower what an alto can, but her upper register is very light, making her a soprano. when you compare her belted notes with Toni, toni's darker.

  • @deadworms Mariah is NOT a soprano, she an alto with a lighter tone, but definitely still alto!!-)

  • You have forgotten one of the most famous CONTRALTOS....KAREN CARPENTER. She had a beautiful rich, deep voice. She had an amazing 4 octave range...singing a low E flat on the song ONLY YESTERDAY.

  • What language is this in the last B&W pics?

  • The ultimate low voices are Grace Jones and my recently discovered Radojka Sverko who sings "Holy night" here

    watch?v=XxmEgZDpbYg

  • mariah carey has just as low a voice as toni.

mariah is naturally very very low and husky.

  • aaliyah the singer was excellent at singing dark and deep also when she wanted ill send you some vides of it.

  • yeah she probably can sing deep but that doesnt make her a alto aaliyah is a soprano she said she was, sopranos can sing deep and low to

  • anyone who says that mariah is anything but a light mezzo soprano is seriously delusional? it's all based on tessitura and timbre people! mariah sounds like crap going that low and without a mic those notes can't project!!!!!

  • And Yes, Mariah is MOST DEFINITELY a Lyric Mezzo-Soprano. I agree with you. However, her low noes sound great but she doesn't like to sing down there always. She does most of her singing in the middle and high register, that's where she will be recognized. However, a voice/choir director called her a Soprano.

  • ? WHY ARE YOU EVEN SAYING ALL OF THAT EXTRA CRAP. you agree with me great. didn't even have to reply. geesh.

  • she's a crap? compare yourself to her and you'll be just a ant to a giant...lol

  • i said extra crap that hes mentioning because it isnt necessary. i know some people cant read. but bitch keep your dumb ass fuck comments in your stupid brain cell.

  • Her singing voice does sound closer to mezzo, but her speaking voice seems alto to me.

  • def

  • @neglectedurchin Then I guess she's delusional herself, since she's been classified herself as alto, numerous times!! Speaking of tessitura, isn't your speaking voice an excellent indication of where voice falls.....her lower range kills btw, so please!!

  • @Thkmra hunny, DOES SHE EVEN SOUND LIKE AN ALTO? no!!!!

saying that she's an alto is the biggest bull i've ever seen. her tessitura is that on a mezzo and her TIMBRE is that of a soprano. just because you can go really low or really high, doesn't mean jack. it all depends on tessitura. nah, your speaking voice has nothing with it. christina aguilera has the speaking voice of a 12 year old high on helium. but her singing voice is more of a lower mezzo.

  • @neglectedurchin 1. Her voice embodies the alto sound perfectly. Her regular siging voice(non-belting) hardly goes over C4. Her voice is VERY low.2 If you think her tessitura is sporano, save her whistle register, u clearly have no idea what "true" sopranic range is. 3. U don't understand 'tessitura', your regular speaking voice IS the best indicator where your 'true' voice lies. 4 As for Aguilera...maybe 10 years ago as a child!!...you can't judge a voice until it has fully matured!!

  • @Thkmra nop, you cant. ooooh, what about beyonce? she SOUNDS like an alto. but she's a mezzo. your speaking voice is no indication of anything. if so, britney spears should be a freaken light soprano! i used to believe speaking voice was an indicator too. but there's enough evidence to refute that notion. and no, mariah isn't and never has been an alto. mariah's a messo. i never said her tessiture was of a soprano. her TONE TIMBRE THE WAY SHE SOUNDS is though. that's undeniable.

  • can any of these ladies sing down to an F2 like Mariah does in her song sweetheart?

  • @murtazamurad1994 Search 'cher love and pain' and check it out

  • I get dizzy with these subtitles

  • Shouldn't Chaka Khan, Brandy, Peggy Lee and Karen Carpenter be in here?

  • Most chicks who are Contraltos are admittedly self-conscious about it. They think that they should have lighter and higher sound. There ain't nothing wrong with being vocally dark, some learn to accept it and some can't.

  • haha, your so right :)

  • There is another thing I picked up about Contraltos. They sound perfect in their natural bottom registers, it. When some of them hit the belting/chest register, their timbres just gets lighter and weird for some reason.

  • Yeah, thats because their natural VOCAL WEIGHT is in their bottom registers.

  • Anita Baker has the best deep voice after Nina Simone.

  • Mariah is the Best.

  • Oh, You forgot some good Alto singers like Chaka, Brandy, Monica and possibly Anastacia. They have got good dark timbres of the Contalto range.

  • Toni Braxton rules

  • you should have included other DARK voiced ladies like tracy chapman and india arie. they regularly sing in the 2nd and 3rd octaves and have low ranges that could rival baritones. I agree MARIAH'S voice isn't that dark. she has a light voice that has the ability to reach into the contralto range. not the other way around. even as her voice matured she is still most comfortable around tenor c

  • in fact her natural voice is an alto, that's why she can sing so easily between the 2nd and 3d octaves.

She admitted it on an interview a loong time ago!

  • It's difficult (and perhaps even pointless) to try to classify a voice with Mariah's range, but based on her lighter timbre and her speaking voice I would guess she's naturally a low mezzo.

If you want to hear a really dark voice, check out Diamanda Galás, a contralto with a wide range who maintains a dark timbre even in soprano-range shrieks.

  • anita baker kicks ass! one of the best

  • oh my you must have forgotten Sarah Vaughan..she has crazy low and dark voice..she even did a duet,a male and female duet that is,all by herself.

  • very interesting and funny video! at first I thought Zarah was a man, a high baritone. Jussi sings it in F minor and it sounds like Zarah sings it in C minor. it goes the other way around also. if one listens to high tenors like russell hitchcock, johnny cook or steve perry without knowing they are men, one can get confused!

  • sorry, Zarah sings it in D minor but she was a bit flat on the phrase here (whole song is on youtube) AND she skips the starting low note of the melody which is an A2 (ACK värmeland, OCH om jag, OM en gång).

  • Mariah's voice isnt dark

  • I agree with you. She is NOT a Contralto like most of these ladies here. Mariah doesn't have a rich, thick, deep, dark enough voice to be an Alto. She has the timbre of a Mezzo-Soprano.

  • nothing about Cesaria Evora?
