  • (1) The knife is facing the wrong way and (2) this is 'honing' NOT sharpening.

To sharpen a knife you need a whetstone, and preferably a professional knife sharpener.

This is INDEED "Knife Sharpening for Dummies!"

  • Damn 12" shaft.... lol

  • bunch of worthless advice

  • lololol see said shaft

  • Honig is not the same as sharpening. And you must hon the blade to the edge not away from it. As you are doing with one side.

  • So I'm sitting there, going at it on a bench stone, and my dads like WTF are you doing and just snatches MY knife And goes to the kitchen and grabs the honing steel and just like whacks the blade against it in the wrong direction saying I was doing it wrong

But he grew up working on a farm sharpening tools so idk how to tell him he's mentally retarded

I just took it from him, finished up sharpening and stropped it a bit on my belt and gave it back a minute later saying he knows what he's doing

  • this is not sharpening. its honing. honing and stropping are not sharpenning

  • great way do destroy your edge.

  • Knive sharpening for dummies.....let someone else do it?!!

  • omg. people: never ever ever ever cut towards yourself. febed01 is right, just look at 0:35. compare with /watch?v=v9qhPeV7IbM

  • Due to showing a method which is not only unsafe, but even DANGEROUS (see at about 0:35) I'm reporting this video as offending. If this video was made by professionnal they should be fired at once !

  • They just let anyone post video's even if they don't know what they are doing huh!!!!

  • she is honing it wrong she can cut her self with that fucked up knife

  • i think your brain needs to get checked out...

  • Yup! That's how dummies would do it allright!

  • How to lose your hand like a pro

  • How to Destroy a Knife for Dummies

  • This technique does not agree with other master chefs

  • This may be the worst attempt at honing I've seen yet! Congratulations!

  • The Dummies books are helpful but this just seems thrown on here just to get a hit and the name seen.... certainly not to really provide much help to people. Seems like an Expert Village style scam.

  • more like "maintaining a sharp edge for dummies" this is not howe you sharpen a blade.

  • HAHAHAHHAHA gj I just lost my finger instead of having my knife sharped.

  • Now my thumb is on the floor, I'm gonna sue you idiots!!

  • So is the next video in this series "How to stitch your thumb back on for Dummies"? Working in kitchens I've seen about every way to use and abuse a honing steel there is and this takes the cake as the most dangerous.

  • This video needs to be renamed: "How to Sharpen a Knife BY Dummies".

  • okay this is wrong and unsafe.take this off youtube before some kid cuts his hand off.

  • @Isometimeseatsalt you should stop letting your kids sharpen knives if you're worried.

  • @deedevil63 actually i dont have kids but i am 17 and i know how easy it is to acquire stuff without your parents knowing. My point was that this is unsafe and that someone inexperienced who watched this video and tried it would have a huge risk of cutting themselves.asshole.

  • who are these guys. i've been using a knife fro the last 13 years and i've never seen it like the way these guys do it

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, this is not the correct way to use a steel.... but it DOES say "for dummies".

  • And go ahead and just cut your damn thumb off...

  • Just started my butchers apprenticeship, I still have a bit of practicing to do...

  • been making knives and swords and steels for over 30 years. First look at the end and you will see it tapers off, Good reason that is where the tip of the knife leaves the steel. Most people go backwards on the flamin thing and wonder why it wont Sharpen the knife. Steels will sharpen a knife if you know what you are doing. Some knives depends on the mix of steel to stainless in them arnt worth the effort. Buy cheep you get cheep

  • Yea this looks pretty accurate, especially the part where the person is close to cutting off their thumb by not sharpening a knife properly

Take this shit off, its gonna hurt some idiots that try this

  • Not even close...honing is not sharpening and you were not even honing right!! Take this video off the internet!

  • my grandpa does this on a stone wall. And the knifes are really sharp this video sucks.

  • that doesn't look right

  • This is wrong!

  • Dummies Rule #1: A steel does not sharpen a knife, it merely straightens the edge

Dummies Rule #2: Hone away from you, not towards the hand holding the steel (duh)

  • @ProSharpKnives ive always sharpened (ceramic steel, dont even start) towards myself. ive never cut myself doing it. so take your duh and shove it. there are different techniques to everything, dont be ignorant.

  • honing and sharpening are two different things. A steel will never sharpen a knife buy will re-aline the edge true.
