  • Hi mate, what faults did you have with the Defender? I'm thinking of trading in my 54 plate Shogun Sport for a 59 plate Defender 90. I love defenders and need a 4x4 for towing my burger van.

  • Hi DingleZilla, love your short reviews. I got myself a defender 110 and yer its been behaving its self sorry about your 90,You where so happy when you got it and it just went ass up after that. Anyway hope to see you do another landrover review soon.

    Mark :-)

  • Hi markguitar1000, In due course, I will indeed!

  • nice!!

  • The pride and excitement you had for your new 'bus' is clear to hear.

Congrat's and only wish I could afford one, 'yer lucky begger'.

  • Hi CountryHouseGent, Thanks for your comment young man. Whats that saying? Ahh yes, "all good things must come to an end". And sadly the pride & excitement soon disappeared as the Defective, sorry, Defender went defective! So, maybe I wasn't as lucky as it seems. I got pissed off & dumped the thing back into Land Rover. I came out with an S Type Jag (my 2nd one) which has proved fantastic! I have used an old 300tdi Disco (now sold on) & now have a Transit van for the mucky work! Regards, DZ.

  • hello! i know my english is bad :) i hope you understand me right... hows the new 6 speed transmission? and do you have any problems whit the higher motor when you drive offroad.. im tinking about overroll and something..

  • Hi overtakeNeps, Your English is OK. Not being sure what language you would normally speak and I do know that in Switzerland there are four national languages makes it difficult to reply in your language.

The gearbox is good, no issues! When offroad, the lower 1st gear is very useful. I wouldn't use 6th gear offroad, you would be travelling very fast even in low box to make this useful. The transmission is generally very good, engine 50/50, rear diff's unreliable. Buy an older Land Rover!

  • You should be proud of that. Where I live in Canada, they don't offer the defender. And any that have been imported can be worth around £40,000 or more.

  • I must EnterMyUserNameHere? Ha ha ha, great user name young man! I was indeed proud of it, but sadly the vehicle didn't live up to expectations! It was less reliable in terms of breakdowns than any of my Series 2's, 3's, 300tdi & Td5 Defenders! Hopefully the new (probably underpowered!) 2.2 diesel engined version mext year will be better. I still won't buy one until they introduce the "All New" Defender in 2012/2013, which is based on the Range Rover Sport/Discovery 3 chassis with the V6 Diesel!

  • @DingleZilla I'm sorry to hear that. I hope that Land Rover is stepping up to the plate, and honouring their warranty. How would you rate the reliability of a defender with a 200 TDI from a disco? I'm looking at one right now, and need to know if they are somewhat reliable. What do you think?

  • Hi EnterMyUserNameHere, Oh they did that, and the dealership that did the warranty work (not the one where I bought it!) couldn't put it back together properly & it broke down again! Anyway, don't start me going at moaning. 200tdi all mechanical just needs regular servicing and timing belts, some 200's have had head trouble but this is usually sorted with a new gasket! So, if the rest of the Defender is ok, then give it a home!

  • @DingleZilla Thanks. It's hard to find people over here who know their Land Rovers. If you get a all new defender, then I hope things turn out better. If not, the best of luck with the one you have now.

  • looks nice^^

  • Cracking bus mate.

  • Hi timzp, Cracking up with crap parts so I got shut of the pile of crap! It is now someone elses problem. I wish I had never sold my 90 Td5 pick-up.

  • @DingleZilla I posted that comment at before I noticed your more recent posts. Sorry to hear that you have experienced all these problems. I hope it hasnt put you off the Defenders. Mine has been all over Australia. I abuse the heck out of it and it never lets me down. I guess you just were unlucky with that one.

  • Hi timzp, Is yours one of these "bonnet bulge bodge ups" or an older one? I still like Defenders and will no doubt have another one at some point, but probably not a new one until this particular model has been replaced by something as reliable as the Disco 3.

  • @DingleZilla No mine is normal. Have a watch of my vids.

  • Bah. Too much letrit! Can't beat the Series, 200 & 300 TDi's. Cross between a Meccano kit & a Tonka toy ;)

  • We've just taken delivery of our new 90 truck cab, hope it proves better than our previous td5, fuel pumps galore! Anyway great videos, keep them up, saxon is a dude!

  • Shame about the bad things hapening to you! LR doesnt have the best rep here in Sweden. Maybe theres a good reason huh?

  • Hi herrHannibal,

    Thanks for your comment.

Apart from the quality issues which arose, I was really annoyed with the attitude of land Rover Assistance. The replacement offered whilst mine was in for repair was totally inadequate, completely useless & a to be honest a snub! I would hesitate before buying my 43rd Land Rover if it were to be a new Defender. Maybe I had a bad one? I did 10,000 miles in it in 6 months & broke down 6 times and required a new rear diff. Not good Land Rover !

  • @DingleZilla

I found the staff to be good for parts but new car I stay clear of because of quality and electronic site.

    what went wrong then?

can u name ur land rover dealer so we can avoid them?

my brother bought an old defender 200tdi, it was daft to replace that engine for what? noise and polution? cash and bullshit more like-

30% of carbon footprint is in manufacture so keeping an old car that pollutes 15% more is actually making 15% less carbon! climate change is all for profit.

  • Hello again- I'm interested that you reckon this one has a better fit/finish than the early green one you reviewed. On my various visits to LR dealers I saw some really awful underseal application and already-rusty body cappings on 57/08-reg Defenders, but the 58/09 ones seem noticeably better with more attention to detail. I hope it bodes well.

  • Hi jozg44,

At first it seemd like it might be the best one I had ever had. Sadly it will not be. The first thing that went wrong was the back door catch, it fell off. Through embarrassment I did not tell anyone. The 2nd was regular loss of power leading to a breakdown after fuel pressure sensor failure! The 3rd was a steering clunking fault. 4th the rear diff was falling in bits internally & needed replacing. Land Rover offerred me a Corsa courtesy car! Not amused.....I am getting rid of it!

  • Did fancy new one,but it seems they need a couple of years on the road to sort out snags.

  • I had 7 Defenders from 97-08 and im waiting to pick up my 110 Csw -10.

Funny i always thinks, this is the best ones so far!! i always end up dissapointed because there is always something going wrong with them.I countinued to buy the til i get a perfect one. That will ofcause never happend.I just love the piece of junk they are

  • California. A blight on our national landscape... How's the car running? Lighting fast I'd expect? I admit I'd have trouble getting used to the sound of a diesel motor. It's so burbly I'd constantly be worried there's something wrong.

  • Strong words young man about California. But then I have no experience f the place so cannot add a comment. Th UK has many such "blight's" on the national landscape! Anyroad, yes the motor is great. My first full tank of diesel lasted 263 miles, the second 273 and the third and fourth 300 miles each! The diesel sound is good but not V8 good. I will do a video diary style update this weekend if possible, busy Saturday & I am going clay pigeon shooting on Sunday so we will see.

  • I am, of course, overstating the case about California but the whole point of Federalism in the American sense is not have one state controlling others. I'm 3,000 miles away and can't get a Defender because they're more "green" than I. Wow- an SUV and guns! You'd probably fit in quite well this side of the pond [assuming you could import your car...].

  • Controlling others, you hit the nail on the head. By way of setting standard to which people have to abide by is a control measure. I like rough shooting and clay shooting I like to do on a regular basis. I use a Winchester Model 120 Pump Action, Webley & Scott Semi Auto, Miroku MK38 Grd5 Sport and Victor Sarasqueta Side by Side. I also have a black powder flintlock rifle needing restoration. Shooting and Land Rovers go hand in hand over here. I wish I was on your side of the pond sometimes!

  • I hope I used "sod" correctly- I studied in the UK but am unsure of the slang. You could get Defenders here until '95 when they stopped importing them. You can still find them here but they're anywhere from 14-25 years old, have 90K miles and cost about $50K. It's ironic they don't pass emissions here in the States with all our gas guzzlers but they're all over the place in the UK which I always thought of as being more environmentally friendly with stricter, more statist regulations.

  • Ha ha ha, Yes indeed you did use the word correctly and I knew how you meant it. Do gooders, red tape & bullshit are what restrict cars and peoples choice of them. It is odd I must admit about your gas guzzlers but I could be wrong here, but the state of California has the tightest emissions regs in the US therefore we can only export vehicle which pass their test! I maybe wrong but I think I am right. Maybe someone can tell us?

  • That is a SWEET car. I only wish you could get Defenders here in the States. I'd get a 110 County if I could but they don't pass emissions here. Lucky sod!

  • Hi rollotwomassey, Thanks for your comment. Pity the US has such strict emissions regs. I don't believe the hype about carbon emissions from cars. I think air travel, power stations, heavy industry, buses, trucks, wars & volcanoes contribute far more. But it is easy to attack the man in the street with bullshit claims in order to raise tax and restrict peoples choice! You should emigrate to a Defender friendly land then you to can be a lucky sod! Regards, DZ.

  • lovely!!!!

  • Hi leegorecki,

Now that I have had it for a week I can safely say this improved model Defender is superb. Fast, powerful, well put together, good clear dash board, superb heater and slick easy gearbox make these Defenders the best there has ever been!!! I love it!!!

  • what do you thing of the 1988 defender 90

i thing it looks better with a ifor willams back

  • They were good motors. But the 2.5Turbo engine and the LT77 gearbox were not exactly brilliant. A mate of mine had a 1989 G reg 90 hard top, it got worked to the bone. Eventually the engine and box were changed for the 300Tdi and R380 gearbox. This proved a massive improvement and it is probably still going somewhere! I believe he has changed for a new TDCi but in green.

  • are i have got one and at the momet it runs spot on
