@ Nancejo On behalf that I had a basset hound since I was 11 years old, those dogs will NOT snap or bite the people that raised them as family. I trained my dog from 11 years old, sadly he's gone now, March 19th 2008. My myspace Spykus Belgor page has pictures of my best friend Digger waving 2 weeks before he passed away...
@DemonWarrior20 - Ask any dog trainer if this is acceptable behavior and you will get the same information I mentioned. It is bad behavior and should not be tolerated. Just because you didn't get snapped it, does not mean it is ok to allow it to continue.
I am saying nothing of the breed, but just this one dog.
@nancejo you're right it is not acceptable. Oh alrighty. my hound was almost 14 years old he still looked about 6 or 7 when he passed on........But he was VERY calm and VERY lovable. His favorite thing to do was to get up and sit in people's laps. He knew how to use them sad eyes to his advantage.
@nancejo Ummm... bassets do NOT "snap" at people. Bassets like playing keep away like this, as in spite of their rumored laziness, they're quite athletic. My current basset, which I've had since he was a pup, who is now 7 y/o has played like this all his life and has never snapped at anyone. Please study up before you comment, so as not to spread misinformation ?
@uncutblond36 - I said nothing about Basset Hounds, just this ones behavior. Ask any dog trainer if this behavior should be encouraged. I know Ceasar Milan would agree with me. It is dominate behavior that should be checked. It may look cute, but it isn't.
Boy Bassets are can be very possessive...it seems like you tormented him a bit too much which is why he continued to growl after you'd backed off (he was asserting his dominance) - luckily our boy's not too bad but if he does have something we want to get out of his mouth, it's good to 'trade' with him one of his existing toys or chews. Worth a try.
@maffoo93 You have no idea what you're talking about, so why'd you even bother to comment ? Bassets are highly intelligent, they're just stubborn. Just remember, " its better to remain silent, and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt"....
I've trained my basset dog to empty on command and treat - took 9 months of persistant training but he got there. Also crating at night helps (they really don't like spoiling their bed area) - so toilet, treat, crate and repeat as necessary and according to age. Stop the treats when they become consistent.
i read in google that they are incapable of biting... unless you train them to bite, but who would do such thing to a precious dog, the basset hound..
I play with mine Basset like this, but his agressivity is just for show. If I take the stick more forcefully he will just keep gogling at it , so I can put it back in his month and we resume the playing. My basset hound is a saint, you can take food of his bown and he would to anything.
My Basset also did this with me. She loved playing tug and would growl and snarl while her tail was wagging. If I let go, she would bring the towel back to me so that I could grab on again.

I have a basset and it makes that exact same sound when playing tug of war, but would NEVER jump and growl at me like he did at :10, that dog was not playing AT ALL. He would have bit you if you put your hand right there.
My dog does that... except he's not a basset hound. XD He's a Border Collie/Healer mix. But he'll react that EXACT same way when it comes to anything that he thinks is his. x__X He likes playing keep away.
My bassett is 10 years old now, December baby. She has always done that exact same thing. Would never fetch, but just loves to play keep away and tug-of-war making that exact same sound, lol. She is 100% harmless. The most gentle dog ever even with her brother cat that can annoy the heck out of her. He's 3.5 years old. She's really good with him.
our bassett sound like he's going to kill you when you play... he should get an academy award for acting, cuz he's not got a mean molecule in his entire dna. He's just a big snuggly dork.
I have a Basset Hound that I CAN NOT get to stop pissing in the house...any suggestions? I don't want to have to make it an outdoor dog, but dammit....
@Stinkyjig i'm the last person to ask but they're the most stubborn things going.... can't put a link here but google dog chat forum and there are tips on there. good luck!
@venusasaboyo We have fostered four hounds in the past three years. Had to house train all. Kept the backdoor open so they can get outside. My basset and irish wolfhound show them what to do-but yes these dogs are hell to house train, but worth it.
@venusasaboyo Leave back door or have a doggie door. There is no bigger pain in rear then house training a Basset. We also brought ours into a home with another male dog. He did good.a
@Stinkyjig one house-training method is to get a cage for your dog to sleep in, as dogs won't mess their own bed. Make sure you get up early to let your dog outside to go pee, as he will be desperate to go! After a few weeks of this you can get rid of the cage. Worked for my Basset. For anyone who thinks it's cruel, dogs like having a den, and will settle into a cage at night quickly (maybe not the first couple of nights though!). Good luck!
@Stinkyjig My basset stopped pissing immediately as I limited his free space. Exemple: when we are not at home, he stays in the hall. All the doors are closed, he can't go anymore around the house. And as his space is smaller now, he doesn't pee. Try this methode, it really helps.
@Stinkyjig get a crate. it is NOT cruel to do this to a dog contrary to popular belief. when humans are gone and leave a dog at home all the dog does is sleep. by crate training him all you are doing is dictating where he will sleep. they will not pee in their own area. if he is peeing while you are home as well the only choice is to be outside an exhaustive amount of time with him and praise him everytime he pees outside.
@crusty14 Absolutely. I crated my Bassett for the first year, much to the dismay of some people who thought it was cruel. It's for his own safety as well as your peace of mind. I had a dog who chewed through an electrical lamp plug while we were out. It's also good for training, just make sure you dont get too large a cage or he will pee inside that. He must have room to stand up and turn around.
@Stinkyjig Get a doggie door, if you can!!! It works great for our two bassets (one of which would pot on the floor if we didn't have it... She did before we got it!)
@Stinkyjig - i have basset , first they do pee in house but now, i don't even remmember when the last time she pee... all they need is a "consistant schedule" : for sure you have let them out; first thing in the morning, before you go to bed and in betwen during day time. watch eating time: twice a day - not after 8pm), limit the water intake during night time, and the most important one is 'WALK YOUR DOG' 10 to 20 mins EVERYDAY.
@Stinkyjig Have you tried using piddle pads, then you can at least get your basset to go in one place and eventually outside. They are difficult to housebreak.
@Stinkyjig I'm afraid, the breed are a very stubborn naughty dog. If mine manages to get upstairs, he will wee on the carpet, and he's 8 and he knows he isn't allowed. He will wee in his bed almost every night. I love him to pieces and will love him forever, but I will have to just put up with him doing this. x x
Try getting a pack of puddle pads and putting them down where he normally goes. If you can get him to start going on those without going anywhere else, you can start moving them little by little. Eventually reduce the amount of pads available and put one in the yard. If he reverts at any point, put them back to the way they were. Think of it like you would litterbox training a cat. Try using Nature's Miracle on his accident spots too, so it's harder for him to smell them. Good luck!
@Stinkyjig What worked for me was having mine cage trained. As long as your not in the house, in the cage he goes. When you let them out immediately reinforce them with the vocal command "outside" while you're walking toward and opening the door and don't let them back in until you hear them speak or paw at the door because eventually they'll apply that behavior to going outside as well. Bassets are slow to housebreak, but mine is 10 months old and doing quite well. Let me know if this helps! :)
DO NOT GIVE UP....they are freaking wonderful dogs. I had the same thing happen with Millie and I can't believe how freaking great my dog is now and she's almost 12!!! Anyway, what I would suggest is to let them out whenever they even somewhat beg to go out. Definitely point out to them when they have done wrong by saying "BAD" but do not hit the hound. Finally, crate, crate, crate...I don't care if anyone you know or anyone on here thinks it's inhumane...it's the right way.
@Stinkyjig I really struggled to house train my basset, and if he's mad at me for something, he'll pee on the floor just to spite me. They are very stubborn, but they are also very food motivated. I recommend stopping all treats except for when your dog goes to bathroom outside. That means walking outside with him, and as soon as he goes, give him a treat. The positive reward only works though, if you don't give him treats for anything else.
@Stinkyjig The only thing you can do is let it out at regular times. Set a timer if you must. In all reality it isn't the dogs fault... I'm not saying you do thing cuz I don't know, but shoving a dogs face in its pee or poop doesn't help. Dogs don't follow agressive leaders, they follow calm assertive leaders. So just take your dog out side every.. I'd say two hours at the most and everytime it goes pee give it affection. Stick to it and he'll get the idea :) Regular walks help as well haha
@Stinkyjig they are VERY stubborn.. did anything come of the dog? our basset turned into an outside dog for almost a year.. we then moved her back inside and she got it in a SNAP! and after we got her fixed she got even better
@Stinkyjig I know this is a very odd question to ask but does anybody elses basset hound pee without picking up either if his hind legs??? mine just stretches out his back legs and pees like he is doing a pose or something
@Stinkyjig My wife began giving our bassett a treat when they would come in from going to the bathroom. She now can't wait to go outside to pee lol...
My Basset doest he same thing, specially with his favorite bone or favorite stick, and trust me they are smart dogs... they intimidate you to release ur hands by growling, and they slowly shift his bite toward ur hand forcing you to release somehow... and they dont bite... my dog only pinched my hands when he did that...
Oh when ur walking bassets, they like to roam away from you.. thats what hounds normally do... trekking
My basset hound just sits on the couch. And when he is not on the couch, he tricks me into getting up so he can steal my seat. I fall for it every time.
he's pretty possessive with that "bone". They're great dogs though. I can't wait to get one. I had one as my first dog. They get on a "trail" when you're walking them though, just to warn you.
@greatpowrer my basset loves to play like that with his squeaky toys but he is wagging his tail the whole time just like this dog they are playing with him not teasing
@strykerfan I've never known a truely vicious basset- they are stubborn and are reluctant to move/ give things back but they tend to know the pecking order. I've had several now and all of them as soft as each other. The worst you can expect is them gently grabbing your hand but none have ever bought blood let alone removal of extremities.
No wonder some dogs become angry and aggressive! Bassets are very docile in nature and this one is telling its owners to leave him alone as he's got his stick and they keep on tormenting the poor dog!!!!! :o((
I had a lab I used to play tug-o-war with sticks with but she was so well mannered that even though she acted similarly to the basset in this clip you only had to say "Let go" and she would. God, I miss that old mutt...
The stick is bigger that he is! This reminds me of my basset/jack russel/chihuahua mix who loved this absurdly large raw hide covered bone that looked as if it came from a blasted horse. He would walk to one side when he was carrying it & smash it into things as he went.
yeah my step dads male bassett gets mean when your around and he is trying to eat and will bite if you if you walk near him when he is eating and gets aggressive around his toys. I wouldn't egg the dog on its not fun getting bit by a bassett I have been many of times. Just remember what people are telling you when your dogs bites you real good, they are meant to cuddle and be your baby not an aggressive dog, train them well when their babies.
poor baby, hes furious cause these two wont let go its like when you have lets say.. mmm your ipod and someone else is trying to get it from you.. what you do? you yell at him thats what you do and this dog is been nice... i once knew one that actually bit the hand tryin to get his stick.... and yes it all deppends on how you teach him to behave.
@DIego12Moctezuma Oh yeas, he's very pissed. His tail is wagging in pure rage.
This is a rather normal behaviour in a Basset, just like Savanahs will let out a snake-like hiss when its excited or happy. Not all growls mean the dog is pissed, dogs have a personality. They are all different, and some might show they're happyness in a alerting way without really meaning to do any harm.
playing pulling games with a dog teaches them agression. Need to show them that the stick doesn't belong to them but in a calm assertive manner! I have been watching too much Ceaser the dog whisperer!
@frazzledbean the speed of the tail wagging means different things and a wagging tails does not always mean a happy dog. A slow wag indicates they are agitated, a moderately fast wag is a happy wag, a very fast wag and ears pushed backward is a sign of aggression. You have to look at ear carriage as well as tail wagging and ear carriage is difficult to define in scent hounds, because of their long, lop ears. Playing tug of war or allowing a dog to do it teaches them aggression.
I got my mom and dad a basset about 5 years ago and he is one mean SOB. I found out the first X-mas we had him when he got a Tamale husk out of the trash. Was in a room without any lights on and I saw him chewing on something. Went to get it from him and he about went ballistic on my hand.
@buckynance I had that happen too!!!! my step dads basset would be digging in my book bag from school and get into my crackers and i would get to the doorway and he would see me getting mad and he would charge at my ankles !!! I was glad to move out and have a Female Bassett with no aggression in her blood what so ever!
@mszoomy you may think its "play fighting" but you dog sees it another way and one day someone could get seriously bitten...I have 2 Jack Russell Terriers that are forbidden to play tug of war together or have any one play tug of war with them. What people think is harmless play, is something totally different to the dog that can eventually turn into aggression, no matter what breed it is. I have seen this in many dogs.
He will drop the stick on the ground and face the other way, while still keeping one eye on the stick, when you approach we will growl, all the time with his tail going crazy, he wants you to try and get it, so much so that if you dont go for it he will pick it up and drop it closer to you and do the same thing ;D
We look after a basset hound a lot and they love this ;D
Its funny because hes trying to act all aggressive but his tail is going mad ;D
With the one we look after when we stop pulling on the stick and walk away so he will follow he brings the stick back and whines so you will do it again ;D
i.i.i.i think he may want that stick.... just sayin

@venusasaboyo We have fostered four hounds in the past three years. Had to house train all. Kept the backdoor open so they can get outside. My basset and irish wolfhound show them what to do-but yes these dogs are hell to house train, but worth it.
blackswan13666 11 months ago
@venusasaboyo Leave back door or have a doggie door. There is no bigger pain in rear then house training a Basset. We also brought ours into a home with another male dog. He did good.a
blackswan13666 10 months ago
@Stinkyjig yep get a doggie door, never have the problem again .... they will just bark all the time!
cparment48867 1 year ago
@Stinkyjig one house-training method is to get a cage for your dog to sleep in, as dogs won't mess their own bed. Make sure you get up early to let your dog outside to go pee, as he will be desperate to go! After a few weeks of this you can get rid of the cage. Worked for my Basset. For anyone who thinks it's cruel, dogs like having a den, and will settle into a cage at night quickly (maybe not the first couple of nights though!). Good luck!
bigbadmonkey1975 1 year ago
@Stinkyjig My basset stopped pissing immediately as I limited his free space. Exemple: when we are not at home, he stays in the hall. All the doors are closed, he can't go anymore around the house. And as his space is smaller now, he doesn't pee. Try this methode, it really helps.
Poupou2009 1 year ago
@Stinkyjig get a crate. it is NOT cruel to do this to a dog contrary to popular belief. when humans are gone and leave a dog at home all the dog does is sleep. by crate training him all you are doing is dictating where he will sleep. they will not pee in their own area. if he is peeing while you are home as well the only choice is to be outside an exhaustive amount of time with him and praise him everytime he pees outside.
crusty14 1 year ago
@crusty14 Absolutely. I crated my Bassett for the first year, much to the dismay of some people who thought it was cruel. It's for his own safety as well as your peace of mind. I had a dog who chewed through an electrical lamp plug while we were out. It's also good for training, just make sure you dont get too large a cage or he will pee inside that. He must have room to stand up and turn around.
aaronb7 1 year ago
@Stinkyjig Get a doggie door, if you can!!! It works great for our two bassets (one of which would pot on the floor if we didn't have it... She did before we got it!)
makmac09 1 year ago
@Stinkyjig - i have basset , first they do pee in house but now, i don't even remmember when the last time she pee... all they need is a "consistant schedule" : for sure you have let them out; first thing in the morning, before you go to bed and in betwen during day time. watch eating time: twice a day - not after 8pm), limit the water intake during night time, and the most important one is 'WALK YOUR DOG' 10 to 20 mins EVERYDAY.
lovegolf77 1 year ago
@Stinkyjig just give them time they are very hard to potty train
jcd524 1 year ago
@Stinkyjig Have you tried using piddle pads, then you can at least get your basset to go in one place and eventually outside. They are difficult to housebreak.
JulianneTrout 1 year ago
@Stinkyjig It took me 10 months to train my Basset just be patient once they get it thats it!!!!
I love Bassets they are fabulous dogs and I would not have another breed.
skeeny50 1 year ago
@Stinkyjig I'm afraid, the breed are a very stubborn naughty dog. If mine manages to get upstairs, he will wee on the carpet, and he's 8 and he knows he isn't allowed. He will wee in his bed almost every night. I love him to pieces and will love him forever, but I will have to just put up with him doing this. x x
MsMoniker 11 months ago
@Stinkyjig
Good luck!

@Stinkyjig How old is your basset?
grady1981 10 months ago
@Stinkyjig What worked for me was having mine cage trained. As long as your not in the house, in the cage he goes. When you let them out immediately reinforce them with the vocal command "outside" while you're walking toward and opening the door and don't let them back in until you hear them speak or paw at the door because eventually they'll apply that behavior to going outside as well. Bassets are slow to housebreak, but mine is 10 months old and doing quite well. Let me know if this helps! :)

@Stinkyjig good luck. they are great hounds. a kick up the arse will sort him out out. dont give up they are sweet hound dogs
dabell011 8 months ago
@Stinkyjig

The positive reward only works though, if you don't give him treats for anything else.
deenahbyramjee 7 months ago
@Stinkyjig The only thing you can do is let it out at regular times. Set a timer if you must. In all reality it isn't the dogs fault... I'm not saying you do thing cuz I don't know, but shoving a dogs face in its pee or poop doesn't help. Dogs don't follow agressive leaders, they follow calm assertive leaders. So just take your dog out side every.. I'd say two hours at the most and everytime it goes pee give it affection. Stick to it and he'll get the idea :) Regular walks help as well haha
richgirl141 7 months ago
@Stinkyjig they are VERY stubborn.. did anything come of the dog? our basset turned into an outside dog for almost a year.. we then moved her back inside and she got it in a SNAP! and after we got her fixed she got even better
short10210 6 months ago
@Stinkyjig I know this is a very odd question to ask but does anybody elses basset hound pee without picking up either if his hind legs??? mine just stretches out his back legs and pees like he is doing a pose or something
MrIn5ane 6 months ago
@MrIn5ane mine does the exact same thing, lol...

@Stinkyjig
Get a dog door. We had the same problem with one of ours. Got a dog door and the problem vanished overnight.
DrArchivist 6 months ago
@Stinkyjig My wife began giving our bassett a treat when they would come in from going to the bathroom. She now can't wait to go outside to pee lol...
LIBBYJACK1 6 months ago
My Basset doest he same thing, specially with his favorite bone or favorite stick, and trust me they are smart dogs... they intimidate you to release ur hands by growling, and they slowly shift his bite toward ur hand forcing you to release somehow... and they dont bite... my dog only pinched my hands when he did that...
Oh when ur walking bassets, they like to roam away from you.. thats what hounds normally do... trekking

My basset hound just sits on the couch. And when he is not on the couch, he tricks me into getting up so he can steal my seat. I fall for it every time.

He's a feisty old fucker! That one.
merthyrmafia 1 year ago 3
he's pretty possessive with that "bone". They're great dogs though. I can't wait to get one. I had one as my first dog. They get on a "trail" when you're walking them though, just to warn you.

they dont like it when you take thigns from them and they do nt like it when you tease them

@greatpowrer my basset loves to play like that with his squeaky toys but he is wagging his tail the whole time just like this dog they are playing with him not teasing

Ours does the same think with its toys and blanket. They love to play pull games. They growl, but they are completely harmless. Its such a great dog.

man these dogs sound ferocious. hadn't heard a basset hound before, but some of those sounds remind me of a velociraptor.

My Beagle/Bassett Hound did the same thing with her toys. It's how they play. My mom said they think they're tigers.

strykerfan 2 years ago 22
@strykerfan to loose a hand to a basset hound it must be made of bacon....
brainlessmuscle69 1 year ago
@strykerfan I've never known a truely vicious basset- they are stubborn and are reluctant to move/ give things back but they tend to know the pecking order. I've had several now and all of them as soft as each other. The worst you can expect is them gently grabbing your hand but none have ever bought blood let alone removal of extremities.
mgreenyuk 8 months ago
ha my beagle used to stare at me like that when i would try taking something form him
lacrossedude209 2 years ago
@Orangman32 The dog is playing. You could stick your hand in its mouth and it wouldn't bite you. It's telling you to pull on the stick.
That grumbly growl is one of the happiest sounds a dog can make.
TRUMPHENT 2 years ago
No wonder some dogs become angry and aggressive! Bassets are very docile in nature and this one is telling its owners to leave him alone as he's got his stick and they keep on tormenting the poor dog!!!!! :o((
rich88b 2 years ago
Basset hounds play like this, my puppy does the same thing.
Roccaleta 2 years ago
Yes bassets don't play ball. They play for keeps but still having fun.
carstars 2 years ago
I had a lab I used to play tug-o-war with sticks with but she was so well mannered that even though she acted similarly to the basset in this clip you only had to say "Let go" and she would. God, I miss that old mutt...
psychee1 2 years ago
The stick is bigger that he is! This reminds me of my basset/jack russel/chihuahua mix who loved this absurdly large raw hide covered bone that looked as if it came from a blasted horse. He would walk to one side when he was carrying it & smash it into things as he went.
Estrodile 2 years ago
yeah my step dads male bassett gets mean when your around and he is trying to eat and will bite if you if you walk near him when he is eating and gets aggressive around his toys. I wouldn't egg the dog on its not fun getting bit by a bassett I have been many of times. Just remember what people are telling you when your dogs bites you real good, they are meant to cuddle and be your baby not an aggressive dog, train them well when their babies.
jezzmoss 2 years ago
poor baby, hes furious cause these two wont let go its like when you have lets say.. mmm your ipod and someone else is trying to get it from you.. what you do? you yell at him thats what you do and this dog is been nice... i once knew one that actually bit the hand tryin to get his stick.... and yes it all deppends on how you teach him to behave.
DIego12Moctezuma 2 years ago
@DIego12Moctezuma Oh yeas, he's very pissed. His tail is wagging in pure rage.
This is a rather normal behaviour in a Basset, just like Savanahs will let out a snake-like hiss when its excited or happy. Not all growls mean the dog is pissed, dogs have a personality. They are all different, and some might show they're happyness in a alerting way without really meaning to do any harm.
Scarpaw1 1 year ago
dogs r cool. i liek when they r stick agressive :D
MeIAuiron 2 years ago
playing pulling games with a dog teaches them agression. Need to show them that the stick doesn't belong to them but in a calm assertive manner! I have been watching too much Ceaser the dog whisperer!
pistachio1987 2 years ago
its a basset....
Halstead2009 2 years ago
wagging their tail doesn't always mean they're happy
frazzledbean 2 years ago

Went to get it from him and he about went ballistic on my hand.
buckynance 2 years ago
all has to do with how they are raised!
soundmoneyfan 2 years ago
@buckynance I had that happen too!!!! my step dads basset would be digging in my book bag from school and get into my crackers and i would get to the doorway and he would see me getting mad and he would charge at my ankles !!! I was glad to move out and have a Female Bassett with no aggression in her blood what so ever!

telluride117 2 years ago
mine was the same way with her tug toys. acting so ferocious but tail wagging furiously the whole time. they love to "play fight"
mszoomy 2 years ago
@mszoomy you may think its "play fighting" but you dog sees it another way and one day someone could get seriously bitten...I have 2 Jack Russell Terriers that are forbidden to play tug of war together or have any one play tug of war with them. What people think is harmless play, is something totally different to the dog that can eventually turn into aggression, no matter what breed it is. I have seen this in many dogs.
JulianneTrout 1 year ago
Ours does exactly the same!
He will drop the stick on the ground and face the other way, while still keeping one eye on the stick, when you approach we will growl, all the time with his tail going crazy, he wants you to try and get it, so much so that if you dont go for it he will pick it up and drop it closer to you and do the same thing ;D

Its funny because hes trying to act all aggressive but his tail is going mad ;D
