This is what I love about Andy, is not only can he rock, but he knows his chops. He's the real deal. If you guys haven't read his book, get it. You won't be able to put it down, it's amazing. It's called "One Train Later".
There are 5 parts to this lesson - you can find the others on Guitar.com. here's the next one - guitar.com/video/guitar-lesson-andy-summers-part-3. you might have to paste it
I just read a fresh Yngwie Malmsteen interview and he says there: "If you want to be a musician practise and don't let anybody/thing in between you and the guitar. If you want to be a rock-star, learn to know all the right people." I think Andy is saying the same here.
Thank you for sharing your insight Andy, its an inspiration to other guitarists to adventure abit farther then basic chording ,to try something new points to the direction of new sound technic and music struture very neat and cool
@lukedeacon you are obviously a retarded moron who knows nothing about music....ironically you come across as a snob, but in your case you are retarded, you fucking twat.
@lukedeacon ....listen!! he plays what he likes and he is entitled to his opinion!! you jelous or something? I find people like you with such crass statements wearisome.
I've heard Andy pull some good solo's and I enjoy that from time to time but MrHardrod is right, you don't need to be the fastest gun in the west to be considered a good guitarist.
OMG I just learn that I am a 45 y/o bedroom guitarist. Thank Andy for a point in the right direction. When friends come over and see my guitars and ask me to play something I shy away cause I havn't learned any song to completion.
Andy Summers is a cop. hehehe. Although Andy Summers is not a shredder, he is a clear example that you need to be a Yngwie Malmsteen or an Eddie Van Halen to be called a great guitarist. Andy's style is more of the sound he produces and the harmonics he gets from his guitar. The chords he plays are pretty hard to do from a beginners point of view because of the stretch you have to have to cover the notes on particular chords. Andy S. is definitely a master musician in the guitar style he has.
Sorry, my mistake I meant Andy Summers is a clear example that you DO NOT NEED to be a Yngwie Malmsteen or an Eddie Van Halen or Guthrie Govan to be called a great guitarist.
@MrHardrod2 thats right, clapton hendrix knopler all dont play fast or shred. i prefer blues, and most of clapton, hendrix and some of the polices riffs. playing fast dont make you a good guitarist. playing with feel and making the guitar sing is what its all about, weather it be blues, light rock or classical.
Yes, you are correct! Andy Summers does not get enough credit. I call it the "John Paul Jones Syndrome" and it is sad. However, there are people that do understand these guys' contributions to their respective bands...and I am relieved by those of us who have not lost sight of that. Andy S. is a master musician who has a very distinct sound - not only on his main instrument, the guitar - but in his compositions and overall sonic production. He is very important and unique. He has my gratitude.

True, true. Andy is my favorite guitarist! Personally I hate EVH and Malmsteen. Shout out to Guthrie cause he's awesome too!
