These cars had the 3.8 litre V6...one of the best engines ever built...decent power and great gas mileage...at least on the highway. Too bad about Olds...but they shouldn't have called their full size models "88" and "98" towards the end, because you couldn't get an eight cylinder any more...that's what the "8" stood for in these models.
We bought a 1985 Ninety-Eight Regency Brougham and a 1991 Nintey-Eight Regency Elite, both new, and the other day i found the casset that came with it. The Oldsmobile song playing in the background of this video is on it. Its so catchy! Ha
My uncle owns an 85 I would sure like to fix that car it mainly needs new tires battery and a steering rack all the seals are roated but that wont be a trouble only the steering rack
Like I said My Uncle has an 85 Olds ninety eight Regency sitting in the drive way for about 5 years now also its grey a car but it needs alot of work done on it people on youtube check out my page and watch my 85 olds video let me know if you think its worth keeping the car ran 5 years ago when my uncle was pulling out out of the drive and popped almost all of the tires and the AC dont even work and all of the controls dont work also theres a problem with the steering coloum while turning TY
Thanks for the video! I love the 98. In Nov 1984 I was 13 years old. I recall seeing that car for the first time in a National Geographic ad just before thanksgiving. I photocopied the road review on it from Popular Mechanics at the library. Years later, I almost bought a 1986 98 used as my very first car with my own money. Unfortunately the used car sales man did not think I was serious (because I looked like a kid) when I made him an offer. I needed a car so bought a 1982 Buick Electra.
It has 105k miles on it, new transmission at 90K and he took damn good care of it body, paint etc perfect. Its a beautiful gold...
The car runs smooth and purrs like new i couldnt belive it I have been told some people got well over 250k miles out of this model I am sure i will.
People bad mouth GM now, but one thing is for sure in 85' when they made theese they made them damn good, I'm proud to own this car a GENUINE GM vehicle.
yo great 85 olds 98 commerical I have a 1985 Oldsmboile 98 Regency a crappy car but still looks in pretty good shape for about 27 or 28 years old check it out sometime

i love Oldsmobile i have a 1987 oldsmobile calis its been awesome but calis were one of the less popular oldsmobiles because they had the 4cyl only seated 5 and had pealing paint and rusting problems but they were awesome i love mine
1984 vs 1985 model? I guess it is subjective. I think the 85 - 91 model is better. same interior space as 84 but smaller, better handling, way better gas, better traction, on and on. I owned both models, so I know.
These ran well with the 3.8l motor. Still a step back from the previous model with the large V8's. The model after this one was even worse. Put the G in Grandmamobile.
@vikrace yeah but then we would be broke cuz gas is a billion dollars now, it costs me like 85$ to fill up my 1990 98, but then i do have a heavy foot lol
That's Christopher Plummer. He was in everything. Needless to say, I do not quire remember my 1985 Ninety Eight Regency Brougham quite in the same light. I guess Christopher Plummer never had to rebuild the engine or had problems with that car's rack and pinion assembly...
If I could go back in time, I would stop Oldsmobile from ever downsizing the 98 for '85, the 88 and Toronado for '86 and the 88 Cutlass and instead have the 98, the 88 and the Toronado use the same design from 1982 until 1992 with only minor changes like a minor face-lift for 1986, shoulder belts for the back seats in 1988 and a drivers-side airbag for 1990.
yeah man u are totally right about that. The pre FWD cars were awesome and the new ones sucked. Wish i could re-design one myself with the modifications u suggested
Not to mention that all four switched back to the scary buzzer where it sounded like two buzzers sounding together rather than using the flute-like tone. I bet you can imagine how scary it was to ride in an 85 Olds 98 because the buzzer was so loud and scary in it.
agreed. saturn should have been axed and oldsmobile saved. why is it that all the carmakers are so insistent on getting rid of all of their name recognition? Everyone knows what an eighty eight or a cutlass is...but an intrigue? lesabre became lucerne, bonneville became g8, and taurus became 500 (recently changed back - but still). Why get rid of a good name only to replace it with one that is either totally unfamiliar or has a negative connotation?
The rear wheel drive versions of these were much better, and nicer looking. Squashing a luxury car down to a unibody and front wheel drive was an insult to the hallmark name.
my father has one of these! it has more dents than i can count. it runs only in reverse,(don't ask). it has over 300,000 miles. but yet runs on two cylinders. yep, he's gets that gm feeling when he turns the key. a rent-a-wreck reject.
My mother has a 1989 model of this car. The front grill is different with more of a 'high-class' feel. 85' models didn't have that good of an engine hince why GM updated it the following year. I own an 1987 Eighty Eight, same car just not with all the trimmings. The engine was updated again in 88 or 89, don't remember. But it made more power the third time around.
The prior generation of the 1977 to 84 Ninety Eights were far better cars, and more of them are still on the roads here than those front wheel drive versions.
Where I live, it's the opposite. I still see a surprising number of these maximum-downsized late 80s 98s and far fewer of the '77 to '84 generation (I always split that generation into 77-79 and 80-84). At the time, I didn't like the max-downsized GM cars, but I knew they were going the right direction, and now I think they're great-looking.
Im sure they are good cars technology wise, but not being on a frame, they are awful in wrecks, and have no support in the rear, they sag down and cant take heavy loads. I guess I will always like the frame generation of GM.

1985 - thats when the OLDSMOBILE DIVISION of GM was selling more cars than the Ford Motor Company!!!
Boxy intermediate sized body + upright window + transverse FWD - I'd daresay it would have had decent space inside?

I still wished that Oldsmobile switched back to the scary buzzer for downsizing the 98 in 1985 until 1991.

I think Oldsmobile should have either switched back to the scary buzzer for downsizing the 98 for 1985 or not redesign it at all until 1991.
