Short flights aren't good for 747s. The plane will age quicker than usual and maintenance costs, with all the area to check on the 747s, will end up skyrocketing, relative to lighter aircraft, considering they don't sell them on accordingly.
Pro1331, this is a 747-400D that is especially designed for short haul high capacity japanese flights. the airframe is modified to withstand the high frequency of rotations.

this increases the fuel efficiency for shorter flights-the range is also mcuh less on these aircraft.

No...Itami is the old international airport. You are thinking of Kansai which opened in 1995 (I think). It's still there though -lol
