  • This was heroic stuff :) Only turbo cars could do this. The torque curve on turbo engines makes such drifts possible.

  • Only for Schumi fans: Put Michael on this Lotus 97T, and tell him to beat Senna's time on this same track.

If he beat Senna, I forget all of his cheats and I accept him as the number one.

  • @fbcgon that's IMPOSSIBLE!

  • @fbcgon This Schumacher bashing has to stop somehow. Senna was not less of a cheat when back in those days. Schumacher's cheatings were nowhere as dangerous as sennas Suzuka 90 heroic first corner

  • Senna's favorite circuit .

  • Look the back end twitching, throwing its tail out! Wow! Thats what people call "on the edge"!

  • What an amazing circuit!

  • Hey look, a car! Not an airplane...honestly, Vettel, Hamilton = pilots, Senna, Schumacher = racing car drivers.

  • Balls to the wall !! . Said to be one of Senna's favorite circuits . Apparently he was unhappy that Australian G.P would be Melbourne in the future .

  • I named my daughter after Senna- he is simply the best

  • beautiful...car, driver, commentary, the 80's...absolutely beautiful

  • Jean-Marie must be the gayest name of any F.I.A President.

  • @Marcus666Sund I agree with you mate!

  • A genius, no doubt about that. Senna was the king of street circuits. Adelaide, Detroit, Phoenix and of course Monaco, he shown his monumental talent.

  • Balls of steel.

  • The 85 Lotus was a beautiful car, too...

  • im glad we have i think the new senna in f1 today in the driver from japan whos name i can not spell

  • Brilliant lap from the greatest of them all. 1:19.8 was the pole time by Senna. Mansell's P2 time was 1:20.4 - 6 tenths quicker than Mansell in a car that was 6 tenths slower! A talent like Senna's will in my opinion never be seen again...

  • @Anime998877 it was a amazing drive, but how do you know the car was 6 tenths slower?

  • @monsterrocks - lol i don't but it was definitely slower.

  • Best driver forever. The car looked like it was dancing on rain and to control the car like that at high speeds was just phnomenal.

  • I thought this high Kerbs weren't used as racing line.

    It looks ugly.

  • @arturcraft2 Depends, you try to find the fastest middle between the unbalance they give and the extra feet of track they give.

  • Im sure he ducked his head on the start finish strate for the pole.

  • @dkssoap Your comment made me smile I bet he did aswell !!!

  • GANGSTA !!!!!

  • senna was the number one, the best.

  • 0:23 osservate il controllo in sovrasterzo in uscita di curva ! Altro che controllo di trazione. Grande Ayrton: IL PILOTA !

  • It was just his 2nd year in Formula one and it looks like the driver at 0:17 was thinking: "Oh my god that yellow helm is behind me" and let him pass.

  • now that's what you call the ragged edge.

  • AYRTON SENNA - WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY BEYOND THE NORM!

  • amazing driving look at him go! love the adelaide track f1 should do one more race there

  • Simply so fucking amazing.

  • forever missed f1 has never been the same without him AYRTON SENNA was champion in every sense of the word he was the BEST !!!

  • I love the way these cars bounced, danced around, slid and darted all over the place. You can see the human element much more than today's cars. The sound is amazing too. TOday's F1 cars, and most single seaters really are so flat and lifeless in comparison, it's like they are pre programmed, once a driver gets into the car, it feels automatic. I think the last "synthetic" single seaters were the F1 cars of the mid 90s, the champcars of the late 90s and the A1GP cars.

  • If Senna did not try hard he would not be Senna. Simply the best 4 ever!

  • Channel 9 Wide world of sports was around back then eh?

You would think after 25+ years they would think of something new.

On topic: That car is all over the place, looks hard to keep it straight, hardly any downforce compared to the cars of today.

  • @MuzzDrifter94 I reckon it'd be the ~1000hp in Qualifying trim that might have made it a bit twitchy in a straight line :- )

  • The lotus had more then 1400bhp cos the rolling road it only went to 1400 bhp so it could have had more.

And senna pawned in that car

  • What were the times of the other drivers?

  • look at how much the car wiggled around when he came out of the corners... amazing control

  • Just look at that thing go!! Ayrton throwing those 1200 horses around like a ballet dancer throws his partner around.

He was light-years ahead of everyone else. The best, ever...

    M. Walker: -"This is Senn-sational!!!!" :-D

  • the qualifying KING!

  • Its a bit ironic what happened in Imola, because he clearly was a man who was not afraid to die. Senna is immortal.

  • Comment removed

  • Qualifying turbo F1 cars and Senna was a match made in heaven!

Nobody had as many turbo poles as Senna. 29

Nobody had as many non-turbo poles as Senna either when he was tragically killed. 36 (Jim Clark held the previous record of 33 poles).

Raw speed? Nobody had it like Senna.

  • Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher and Jean-Marie Balestre Disliked this Video.

  • @Sizomu haha nice but a little bit difficult for Jean-Marie Balestre because he's dead

  • @Sizomu That wasn't Schumacher, that was Mansell who got bumped from pole by this lap, hacking in on Schumi's account ;)

  • @RJW14 Offcourse. Shumi was still sucking mom's tits... but I meant: The way Senna "dances" with the car..Schumi would have disliked the overpowering Senna. They wouldn't like a Video showing off the Majestic Senna........To them it would be like propaganda..but to us.. Fact/Entertainment........Cheers

  • @Sizomu God, that is such a childish comment. Try and put something constructive down or don't bother.

  • @thehitchrules stop crying, its a joke. Just enjoy the best Video youtube!

  • @Sizomu Bealstre dislikes this video from HELL, good job, m8 U don't have to be too extreme

  • @MrTann2010 don't take tooo serious. but he disliked it during the time he was alive already :-) But U R right, RIP Jean-Marie Balestre (I am not a fan (at all), but Still deserve respect)

  • @Sizomu Why the hell Schumacher ?! Schumacher never hated Senna.. yes, they were in trouble one time but do you remember the press conference after the race where Schumacher had the equal number of victories like senna ? So better think about you're comments before you write them down...

  • @RoterB4ron , Don't take too serious. But I mean Schumi would love to dance with the car like that tooo. Schumi came close in the early days with Ferrari in Monaco, Als dancing with the car like this, But not like the way Senna does it. Looking at Senna, Makes you feel the is about to Crack or jump of the track.

  • @Sizomu Balestre died in 2008

  • Fantastic! Just watch that car dancing even in a straight line! Ayrton Senna forever!!!!

  • does anyone has the qualifying lap of Mexican Gp 1986?

That was awesome, I've nvere anything like this before

  • I'm a Melbournian and miss Adelaide so much.

    That track was awesome.

  • @1:22 Jones Jiz in his pants after Senna Got the pole.

  • @Sizomu its james hunt

  • Fantastic Renault V6 Turbo in that Lotus!

  • i just want to say that SENNA WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE GREAEST

  • 1100BHP is no match for Ayrton.

  • I wonder what it would be like to drive that car with the amount of power it had at that moment (1300-1400 hp)

  • His entry and exit out of the last corner was flawless-- and that was probably what attributed to his very fast lap

  • @hmdwgf yes that would be one of the top things to help contribute to his lap because he kept the car in control ie gripping at that speed hence the quick lap another person that could do that was Jim clark another amazing racer he was much smoother ocmapred to Ayrton but his precision and speed was the same as senna's or faster in my opinion, and his car control was incredible he was the senna of the 60's if his didn't die he could've done alot more ie more poles and world champs :)

  • It really does look like a rocket he is driving, damn the tail is nervous out of the bends. Then again 1500HP 1lap engine with that megaboost combined with turbolag will probably do that :D

  • good old days which f1 looks like f1 ..great drivers great cars great circuits..todays f1 piece of shit..

  • Beautiful how he is sliding through the corners and to see the car shake when he hits the accelerator again. It shows he has confidence in the car, its the only way to drive on the limit.

  • @Fastbikkel Yeah I agree completely with your point on confidence. all the footage I have seen of Senna in his JPS lotus cars shows he had huge confidence in them . I just love watching the footage that exists. He didn't have confidence in the Williams car and paid the ultimate price . He just rang the neck of all the cars he drove !!

  • the qualifying king

  • I'm 28 so I was 3 the year this was going on and I remember in the early 90's thinking cars like the high nosed benetton were disgusting looking. TO THIS DAY when I hear or think "F1 car" it's this 85 JPS lotus that pops into my mind. The best F1 ever looked with the most beastly engines ever produced. God these guys were gods. GODS!

  • @quasiphatpaul i prefer the 86 jps lotus. check out senna lap at brands hatch!

  • really on the limit, look how the lotus breaks out all the time and senna perfectly corrects it, what a legend!

  • JPS Lotus, the greatest livery ever,Senna arguably the greatest driver & Adelaide, what a circuit that was - long straights, wide track, loads of overtaking - much missed!

  • This was the difference between Senna and a driver like Schumacher. Senna could be competitive in anything. With the exception of perhaps his first win, Schumy just couldn't do it without a little help (legal or otherwise).

  • @ajd0408 When it rained Schumi was always loads faster than the rest of the field, even those years when he drove a 2nd division car(94,96-00 and 04). It was the same qualities that made Stewart great, great handler and longterm steady driver. Not superb over just 1 lap like Senna and Raikonen types. Schumi might have had some help and luck but he was still the best of his era by far.

  • 1. "Some help"? "SOME HELP"??? Jesus Christ - Schui had more backing than any other TEN drivers in history put together - Ferrari spent a military budget of $5000 million on his cars from 1996-2006. Giving him the best car a MASSIVE 50% (7 or 8 of 15) of his years in F1 - 00,01,02,03,04 (+ the B'ton in 94,95) Only 92,93, 96 and 05 were his cars ever 2nd class.

    2. Senna was SUPERB over a race distance- just as in quali- just that in the 80's mechanical unreliability cost him many more wins.

  • Greatest era of F1 in my opinion. Spectacular drivers, amazing cars and definitely the best commentary pairing of all time (James Hunt and Murray Walker).

  • agreed it was the drivers that drove the car not AIDS

  • yep

  • I agree, it's called the golden age of Grand prix racing.

  • @janikakis I completely agree with you .Took it for granted at the time . It was awesome. Always on in our house. Definitely stands out in my memory .Great to watch the footage of that time.

  • @janikakis The commentators were god, but i wished the coverage of the race was like now. Back then, they only mostly covered the front runners and you have no idea what is going on at the back.

  • THE F1 Legend. This guy could drive Turbos, Non-Turbos, Traction Control, Non-Traction. He could have easily won the Indy 500 and IndyCar series and driven anything else and won. That later guy didn't really start winning until AFTER Senna was gone and the FIA turned F1 into an automated video game with airplane tires.

  • the tail of his Lotus many times tended to broke out. the man is a mythos.

  • Simply the best!!!

  • Thank you for sending, And listen to the gas control man!

It's like he was driving a gokart and was pumping the gas (the way to drive gokarts)

  • Amazing stuff...

That car looks like it will spin if it is pushed 0.00001% more. Incredible that man... one of a kind.

Formula one was never as exiting as it was in back then.

  • The magic man at work. Aside from being in Brazil, I think he was at peace the most when he was racing. R.I.P my friend. Ayrton Senna forever!

  • The late James Hunt talking about the late Ayrton Senna. Gives me goosebumps.

  • A simply orgasmic sight to behold... Bring it all back please now :-)

  • God, you can see him, you can feel it he is driving in the limit!!!

  • magic senna :)

  • Ayrton Senna = Master Pilot.

  • Man i wish he was still here waxing everybody made F1 interesting to watch now there is no more great battles or three amazing drivers hammering it out lap after lap now i hate to say it kinda boring

  • sorry accidentally rated 2 stars. deserves 5.

    love senna

  • Absulutley on the limit !! very fast !

with in inferior car he was so quick !!

Senna the best and Schumacher the secound number one!

  • Any modern day driver would not have got that car around that track in in the 1:19's. Not even Michael Scumacher in his prime!

  • This is what good formula one racing looks and sounds like go back to V8 Cosworth engines

  • This was the turbo era, 1.5L V6, 1500bhp

  • The genius at work ! We won't see anything like that anymore... Never...

  • The JPS Lotus was a beautiful car!!

  • Wow. He's driving a 1000hp+ GP car like its a fucking go kart! He's on the power so early in the corner's that there is a slip angle on just about every exit - not too much or too little. It is art in motion IMO.

  • Awesome video! Unbelievable driving!

  • This is sensational...Always over the limit...

  • That's amazing cuz you actually see the car on its limit.

  • Today we dont sse pilots in inferior cars doing pole position. The last greate pilot we have seen was Schumacher, but Senna was fastest.

  • You could tell from this corker of a pole lap that you were looking at a future world champ, just brilliant on-the-limit driving.

  • Thats what I see in Vettel.

  • Bahahahaha

  • I would expect nothing more from a hamilton fan...

  • Are you joking?

Never like Senna.... the only man that can come close is a 2004 Schumacher.

  • Can you read? Did I ever say he was like Senna?? I just said I see Vettel as a future world champ, duh.

  • Alrighty, I apologize.

Then yes, I do see him a WDC...

  • Wow, a truce. Thats so rare on youtube. lol

  • Those 'real men' are the same people who wanted F1 as safe as it is today, fuck-tard. After Ratzenberger's crash, Senna and Schumacher campaigned to improve the safety of F1.

Senna may have died in 1994, but you forget all those who were heavily injured before the end of the 'golden age'.

I'm sure Martin Donnelly would've liked it if F1 was as safe as it is today, if you even know who that is.

    Ironically, you're insulting Senna, too.

  • you are right, but also donnelly would have been propably killed a few years earlier ;)

  • Awesome circuit. Awesome control. Awesome power.

  • I <3 Senna

  • so awesome! don't you got more vids? good quality too

  • Mind-bending shit! - Senna was in another zone - mentally he worked himself into a different dimension!

    Quote from Encyclopedia of F1, p123;

"Senna was the undeniably the fastest driver the world has ever seen - the greatest driver ever to grace the circuits - perhaps the ultimate sportsman - the man who was closer to perfection in his chosen field than any other in history."

    Indeed! AMEN!

  • @Brainman94 Totally mind bending shit.

What I love most is James Hunt (a world champion) losing his shit over a truly staggering talent. The likes of which we may never see again.

  • @my1minuterant

Yeah. I noticed it too. Amazing.

  • Great! What a lap!

That's the only Australian GP pole lap I'd never seen...you've got to love Youtube.

    Thanks for that great post.

  • My God, Senna's the only one champion

  • ive got part of senna's car. A mate was a track marshall in adelaide.... senna hit a wall during practise or otherwise I dont know, but ive got a small bit of the front wheel assembly. Worth anything you think?? its only about 30cm long and looks like a piece of tube aluminium

  • it seems like you got a piece of the front suspension, you can try selling it, but i doubt you'll get anyone buyers..

    (im replying to greezx9r btw)

  • Fantastic!!! The Adelaide GP shits all over Melbourne...

  • @DRIFTCKOWN so true man Adelaide's circuit rocks ass man....it's a drivers circuit! I'm from Melbourne and F1 should have stayed in Adelaide....cheers.

  • amazing...the car was thrown around like crazy,

that car wasnt the smoothest thing around for sure....amazing what senna could do

  • I don't think any of today's drivers could post a time like that on the same track in the same car. They would probably complain about how twitchy it was..

  • You are right but you dont know how right you are. Drivers now complain about poor handling that is only about 1/10th the problem that these 80's cars imperfect handling was! Make no mistake these cars were a serious fight to control. Now it's a breeze - a walk in the park.

  • Cars back then also looked a lot prettier and sounded a lot better than today's cars...

  • We need more vids about qualif, about time when F1 was really F1 .

    Senna : driven to perfection.

  • just what i think senna qualifying on youtube por favor, thanks for this vid criscles!

  • Great driving, on the edge!!

  • got anymore?? nice video!

  • I was there that day. Seems almost like yesterday. RIP Ayrton Senna.

  • Great that you kept that footage all this time.

  • Great to see a rare video of Ayrton Senna on an all out qualifying lap from the Turbo days!
