@arthursucks ok, android uses a modified version of the linux kernel, but android is neither published under the BSD/GPL licence nor GPL in general. There is no Copyleft and your not able to acess the glibc. you just cant see under the hood. only the kernel is Linux, the rest is just proprietary software. remember the kernel ist not the os. btw, sry for my bad english.
Android is under the GPL2 and Apache2 license. You can get the source from the public git: android.git.kernel(dot)org. Where are you getting your information from?
@arthursucks false. the Linux kernel is under GPLv2, and Android is under Apache2 (source.android(dot)com/ source/ licenses.html). Its 2 n the morning, so im going to bed now, but im sure were talking tomorrow xD.
@arthursucks no, i didnt say android was not open source, i said ardroid is not linux. and i ment its false to say android is under GPLv2 AND Apache2. GPLv2 forces you to copyleft, which means, if you modify the source code and publish it, your "product" has to be under GPL too. But Apache2 does not. Here is an intresting artikle about android/linux: arstechnica(dot)com/open-source/reviews/2009/02/an-introduction-to-google-android-for-developers.ars
@BubbIeGun It has both licences. The licences do not apply both on the system as a whole but on parts of it. The patches on the Linux kernel they made are under GPLv2 (they can't change that fact). However, the rest of their code is under Apache2.
You have to know that Linux is not an OS but a kernel. Thus, android can never be Linux, nor any destribution out there...
Apachev2 is an OPEN SOURCE licence without copyleft, but you have the right to modify and distribute. It's not proprietary.
@BubbIeGun "android is not linux" - If you are talking about the Star Wars android then you are correct. If you are talking about Android OS, well, you are very wrong.
I hate to say it but the new iPhone looks absolutely sick. I had my heart set on buying the HTC Incredible later this month but my loyalty does not rest with any one company. I will buy what works and what is best. We shall see the reveiws.
@shashikejayatunge iphone os is great why would i want to actually use the features in my phone, id much rather have a nicer user interface instead of having something with more features. android sucks, who wants more features/customizabillity...
Kick ass unless you want to use a comicbook reader, change your keyboard app, or any other thing that Apple/AT&T don't want you to do... It's about freedom, and Android's got that.
I'm definitely interested in testing out Android on my phone (I've got the 3gs) but from the video, it's still a very early build and everything's not quite perfect on it. Still awesome to think that I'll be able to liberate my device at some point in the near future. :)
@arthursucks You can get a used Android for less. Also iPhone only has 1 button, you need home, back, search, and menu key. It's possible on iPhone android but more difficult. You can get a MyTouch 3G on Craigslist for about 200 dollars.
@eduardoc The iphone hardware is solid, nice responsive touch screen, and with the current upgrade cycle of 1 year (or less) a pretty large used market. the only downer is no sd support.

How is what I said false? You said it was not open source, the Apache2 license is recognized by the OSI.

@arthursucks That's only if you buy one with no contract. I got my htc eris with verizon for $80.

I don't want a contract, that's the thing. I'm paying less now that I did when I had a contract. Contracts are a price fixing tool.
