He was one of the four principles in the really legendary "Carmen," with Leontyne Price as Carmen, Mirella Freni as Michaela, and Robert Merrill as Escamillo (the Toreador). He is so luscious and handsome, so heartbroken, so all out furiously devastated at the end -- I really recommend looking for that recording, it's just pure pleasure no matter who is doing what.
shut the fach up about what type of tenor he is... he has a strong voice but with the emotion of a lyric. This is why he is great. Arguing over semantics detracts from this stellar performance.
@tehen162 I'd say Corelli was a true tenore di forza with the capacity to sing lyrically as well. Certainly he could sing much more lyrically than Del Monaco.
Don't get me wrong; MDM was a great dramatic tenor. But his technique was such that he couldn't match Corelli for lyricism without strain:) --
@tehen162 Yep, he was bigger than spinto, although some contemporary operaphiles use that term to describe him. I think they do in large part because they simply have never heard a true Italian dramatic tenor of this caliber; they don't know what else to call him:). Best, Steve
@tehen162 For me he is the most exciting expressive I ever heard and I had the good luck to see him in Trovatore, Ernani,Forza del Destino.. Poliuto, Carmen, adrianna Lecouvreur and Turandot All performances in europe as I never had the opportunity of attending a Met performance although I have many on CD
As a teenager I saw Corelli at the Met. After one performance, I threw myself in front of the taxi that was spiriting him away. It screeched to a stop, and I presented my program for an autograph. By that time, a large crowd had surrounded the cab, and he was stuck. He signed my program and cursed at me in beautiful Italian! That would have been in the early 60s, and I still treasure the memory.
@stevevandien I heard Corelli at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. That was the old building, not the Lincoln Center building used now. I don't remember which opera. I had purchased a standing room ticket for $3.00. We stood in the aisle near the front, and the sound was beautiful. I haven't been to the Met since the early 1960s, so I can't compare the acoustic quality then to today's standard. At the time, as a teenager, I thought it was perfect.
Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
being one who was privileged to hear Corelli live at the met. on a number of occasions I can attest to the fact that his stage presence was larger than life and his testosterone flowed through every note he sang. He was unique and left his stamp on the things he sang, especially Calaf, Cavarradossi, manrico, and Don Carlo. While many fine tenors have sung these roles, Corelli during his time made them his!
This is rare footage, indeed -- but I fear Corelli is lip-synching in this clip. He's undoubtedly one of the greatest lyric-baritones and warranted a live orchestra and live chorus to back him up. But thanks for posting these lost clips.
@CEMILIOB Video description says clearly that this is a playback video. Corelli retired in 1975, the video was made in 1982 for an Italian tv program using his earlier recording of the aria. Corelli was a tenor (dramatic or heroic) not a lyric bariton. This is a tenor aria.
I'm too young to know Franco Corelli from stage but I know almost everything he recorded.I grew up on his recordings . My parents played his records every single day.He was a kind of god in my childhood home.I love him to these days and still keep his records.
He's voice is so beautiful that the heart hears more than the ear. His face is more handsome than Michelangelo's David and his body is as glorious as an that of an Olympian. This is the greatest voice ever. Everything the maestro touched became unforgettably beautiful . God and nature forgot to stop when he was created. He had everything and he loved us enough to share all that he had to give. He held back nothing and that's what makes this beautiful gifted genius so beloved.
The best tenor of all times Such a .rich ,power and big voice ! His manly voice electrifies everyone's body and soul ! The words are very insignificant and poor to describe the greatness of the legend FRANCO CORELLI !
SOME people consider Lanza great??? Anybody with an ear does. Simply the greatest tenor of all time, with an unparalleled combination of beauty and power.
Ci manchi.
No need to compare! Corelli will always be Corelli and that's the only thing that matters. If we also think Pavarotti is great, does that change Franco Corellis voice!? Of course not!!
Corelli is the best ever. Any classification is pointless, but still... There have been other wonderful tenors, Bergonzi, Di Stefano, Del Monaco, Kraus, Bjoerling, Tucker, Gedda, Alva, Simoneau, Arraiza, Vickers... And we have Domingo, Kauffman, Alagna, Florez and a few others. But none had or has the sheer power of emotion of Corelli. Plus voice, phrasing and musicality.
And to think that elsewhere on YouTube some people consider Mario Lanza a great tenor!
Oh, please. Pavarotti? Yes, nice and cute voice, easy and all. But no passion. No emotion. No power. Pavarotti was a lyric tenor who took on dramatic roles too big for him. Corelli had it all. I don't think his Calaf has ever been surpassed on all counts. Or his Canio. Or his Cavaradossi. Or his Manrico The list goes on and on.
@MrZeitun the general phrasing, power and rythm of this song when sung bar pavarotti is simply far superior to corelli's rendition, just saying my opinion considering yours is so strong :D
@MrZeitunProclamations are wonderful&make us feel good about our favorites.Corelli is certainly1of my favorite tenors,I do feel that he was the best or1of the best in Turandot, however I do prefer other tenors in other operas over FC.(,perhaps marginally).I do think that Lanza was a great tenor for at least the so called AmericanSongs.Lanza had1of the most beautiful voice qualiies ever.ML was also responsible for helping the average person appreciate opera through his moviesrecords&concerts.Enjoy
I listen to and watch this video about ten times every day. I can't get enough of him. Did he ever have children ? I wonder what his parents looked like and what they though of his voice and singing. If there were a museum of him in Italy or in his home town of Ancona I would like to go see it. Does any one know if there is one? Please comment.
I began listening to opera when I was 7 years old because my parents listened to it. Right away I knew I liked it. I though it was really wonderful that people could sing like that. Thus, I started becoming familiar with different operas and different singers. I first heard Franco Corelli sing when I was 13 in 1961. I thought to myself right away that in my estimation everything about his voice, including the way he sang, and even the slight lisp in his voice was absolutely gorgeous.
I think whats impressive is that the audio matches so well with video taken 20 years later...meaning hechanged nothing in 20 yrs...only opera singers can say that!
PAVORATTI LIVE ON STAGE DID IT BUT IN THE COMPLETE ROLE COMPARING HIS CALAF TO A SPINTO OR DRAMATIC CORELLI OR MDM IS NOT REALLY A PROPER COMPARISON OF VOICES, HE WAS MORE SUITED TO ROLES LIKE BOHEME, BALLO AND THE DUKE RATHER THEN IN AIDA AND TURANDOT. JUSSI WAS SMART, NEVER SANG CALAF LIVE ON STAGE IN HIS LIFE. HE KNEW WHAT WAS FOR HIM AND WHAT WAS NOT, PAV SANG IT ALL! EVEN OTELLO IN CHICAGO, NOT FOR HIM . GREAT TENOR BUT STILL NOT A SPINTO OR DRAMATIC VOICE.DI STEFANO ALSO SANG OTELLO!!!
Corelli was hands down the greatest tenor of the past century. I know some purists are going to start throwing names out, but for sheer beauty of voice, brilliance of tone and the ability to get maximum projection as a true spinto tenor he was unmatched. He and Del Monaco are two names mentioned that could bounce their voices off the back walls of the old Met. Had the privilege to hear him live and there was no better.
@Staffo420 I like Corelli on several arias including this one. If you want to hear an even more powerful performance, listen to delMonaco sing it. Check out the one posted by mujviktor. If you prefer extraordinary highs, Bjorling can't be beat.
Spectacular! Corelli is one of my favorite tenors of all time. The only tenor I like better than Corelli for this aria is Pavarotti. But, be sure to listen to Caruso, too, as he had a flaming voice for Puccini. If only we had a recording of his voice with modern equipment.
One of many great performance by Corelli. If only this aria were written before 1904, Caruso would have probably benchmarked it. Regardless, Bjorling, Corelli, Gigli, Pavarotti, and a few other great tenors have given us memorable performances of this aria.
Bravoooo!!!!!
@ilqarmaclumov I don't think your statement is accurate.Corelli sang some D-Flats both LIVE& on records.Where Bjorling never did to my knowledge.Corelli also sang Hugonotti LIVE&A Te O cara on records. He also interpolated a D flat live in his Poliuto performance.Corelli also did more mezza voce'&diminuendos than Bjorling.Corelli also had a wider range of repertoire than Bjorling, although Bjorling passed at age 49, but I doubt his repertoire would have been extented because of his alcohol abuse
@sugarbist here is a beautiful high d flat from Björling watch?v=sO4cAWlFUJk and a low C in ballo watch?v=-_OFNhaXR_k i´m not sure comparing singers in this way is constructive, but if you are going to do it, perhaps you should do some research first ?
@dubreed2001 Dubreed. I was answering a statement made that(Bjorling had more of a vocal range than Corelli),which is simply not true.I also answered by stating TO MY KNOWLEDGE that J.B. did NOTsing a D-flat.It is also difficult to research everything ever sung by an artist. As Del Monaco also hit a D-flat in the Terzetto in Trovatore which was exceptional,He is not considered a Hi Note Tenor as a Volpi or Fillipeschi .I do agree that this is not the most constructive way to compare singers.Enjoy
@sugarbist Björling made one of the most famous Db ever in Stabat Mater. You`l find it at German Operasingers. Known is also that he could vocalize up to high F! Concerning Nessun Dorma, this is one of the three best in my book. My absolute favorit is JB:s "slow" version from 1944. This is IMO not only the best ND , it´s also one of the greatest operaperformances ever. Jussi was the one who made ND famous in the 30:th and 40:th as an separate aria. Corelli though is THE Callaf thats for shure!
@suffes Bjorling had1 of the most beautiful quality of voices ever& my remarks are not intended to diminish his greatness but an attempt to exchange information.I'm not surprized that he could vocalize to F as it is easier for a tenor to vocalize to a higher note than it is to sing that note. His Nessun Dorma IS impeccably beautiful, but I feel that Bjorling is not as intimate or warm as A Di Stefano, Lanza, Gigli ,Cortis,Schipa,or Pertile. Many times I feel these tenors are singer to me.Enjoy
@suffes I listened to Stabat Mater and the entire aria along with the D-flat was indeed beautiful. No tenor is without limitations as my favorites are Corelli, Del Monaco,Di Stefano&Lanza. I enjoy many other tenors as well like Lauri Volpi, Fillipeschi ,Campagnano ,Barioni ,Merli , Cortis, Fleta ,Gigli,&De Muro. They all had their limitaions & were not perfect. Some of these tenors were great & some were very good.I would also like to say that JB was great but I don't enjoy him as much as my top 4
. Say what you say the reality is that the great Franco Corelli is the best "Prince Calaf," even now, his beautiful and powerful voice and expertise to apply it in their interpretations. therefore always been the most in Europe and the MET. since it debuted, each year, operates season tickets were sold out immediately when it was announced to the great Corelli, until he decided to retire for a long time asked him to return.
вообще-то ignorance is bliss...
The more I listen to the Great Corelli, the more I appreciate him as the complete operatic Calaf. I prefer the recording of Jussi B, but he would not look like a Calaf or act like one. Indeed, Jussi's acceptance as an non-italian is tribute to his astonishing natural gift; a gift that may exceed all others in the post-war period, but an actor he was not.
@RunMeloRun This aria is about the victory Calaf expects to win by morning, and with it the right to claim Turandot as his. There shouldn't be anything sad about it.
Ciao ! Ciao ! A proposito : sto ancora aspettando i cioccolatini.
Ciao : ci vediamo allora !!!
Ciao!
@mozzrt Dear Mozzrt,I have heard Corelli lisp at times. However this recording doesn't show any signs of lisping.Perhaps you have developed a listening lisp or perhaps I've developed a non listening lisp.Which ever the case, I think there are voices that just irritate listeners as at times, Richard Tucker does irritate my ears without lisping, But I must also admit that RTdid do some quality singing and I find him very personable.I'm also sure that Corelli has done some more than quality singing.
@mozzrt It seems that you have a habit of criticizing Corelli for lisping , even when he's not lisping. You also criticized Del Monaco for Lisping, which is the furthest thing from being accurate. You and I have the right to like or dislike any artist. However, you should at least me more honest with your opinions even if you don't care for a particular singer or tenor.I am not particularly fond of Domingo, but when PD does sing something well, I do comment positively. Enjoy
Been listening to many versions of this song and this man's version is exceptional. I don't know much about Italian opera stars but not all are of the same ilk. I really loved this version.
This for me, is the best interpretation of "Nessun dorma"; he is the perfect voice for Calaf!!!. Someone could like other tenors, but it is hard to say who is the best...I can only talk about my own perception...Bravo Corelli!!!!!!!!!!
I would be thrilled to hear any one of the great tenors' interpretations of this song. We all have personal preferences but this version of Corelli's is wonderful! Let us enjoy it in and of itself!
He was one of the four principles in the really legendary "Carmen," with Leontyne Price as Carmen, Mirella Freni as Michaela, and Robert Merrill as Escamillo (the Toreador).

@brunobrandy I just want to add to your comment that Corelli and Del mónaco are the greatest ITALIAN tenors.

@ilqarmaclumov I don't think your statement is accurate.Corelli sang some D-Flats both LIVE& on records.Where Bjorling never did to my knowledge.Corelli also sang Hugonotti LIVE&A Te O cara on records. He also interpolated a D flat live in his Poliuto performance.Corelli also did more mezza voce'&diminuendos than Bjorling.Corelli also had a wider range of repertoire than Bjorling, although Bjorling passed at age 49, but I doubt his repertoire would have been extented because of his alcohol abuse
sugarbist 7 months ago
@sugarbist here is a beautiful high d flat from Björling watch?v=sO4cAWlFUJk and a low C in ballo watch?v=-_OFNhaXR_k i´m not sure comparing singers in this way is constructive, but if you are going to do it, perhaps you should do some research first ?
Great rendition here by Corelli btw :)
dubreed2001 6 months ago
@dubreed2001 Dubreed. I was answering a statement made that(Bjorling had more of a vocal range than Corelli),which is simply not true.I also answered by stating TO MY KNOWLEDGE that J.B. did NOTsing a D-flat.It is also difficult to research everything ever sung by an artist. As Del Monaco also hit a D-flat in the Terzetto in Trovatore which was exceptional,He is not considered a Hi Note Tenor as a Volpi or Fillipeschi .I do agree that this is not the most constructive way to compare singers.Enjoy
sugarbist 6 months ago
@sugarbist Björling made one of the most famous Db ever in Stabat Mater. You`l find it at German Operasingers. Known is also that he could vocalize up to high F! Concerning Nessun Dorma, this is one of the three best in my book. My absolute favorit is JB:s "slow" version from 1944. This is IMO not only the best ND , it´s also one of the greatest operaperformances ever. Jussi was the one who made ND famous in the 30:th and 40:th as an separate aria. Corelli though is THE Callaf thats for shure!
suffes 6 months ago
@suffes Bjorling had1 of the most beautiful quality of voices ever& my remarks are not intended to diminish his greatness but an attempt to exchange information.I'm not surprized that he could vocalize to F as it is easier for a tenor to vocalize to a higher note than it is to sing that note. His Nessun Dorma IS impeccably beautiful, but I feel that Bjorling is not as intimate or warm as A Di Stefano, Lanza, Gigli ,Cortis,Schipa,or Pertile. Many times I feel these tenors are singer to me.Enjoy
sugarbist 6 months ago

The more I listen to the Great Corelli, the more I appreciate him as the complete operatic Calaf. I prefer the recording of Jussi B, but he would not look like a Calaf or act like one. Indeed, Jussi's acceptance as an non-italian is tribute to his astonishing natural gift; a gift that may exceed all others in the post-war period, but an actor he was not.

this is great, but I still like Bjorling and Stefano's nessun dorma better.
the tear in their voices communicates sweetness and sincerity instantly,
Corelli and Lanza, even Gigli, lack that sadness in their voices ......

bodiloto 1 year ago
Ciao !!!

This is one of the very few arias, where Corellis mannerisms don't kill me. But his terrible lisping is nauseating, as always.
mozzrt 1 year ago
@mozzrt Dear Mozzrt,I have heard Corelli lisp at times. However this recording doesn't show any signs of lisping.Perhaps you have developed a listening lisp or perhaps I've developed a non listening lisp.Which ever the case, I think there are voices that just irritate listeners as at times, Richard Tucker does irritate my ears without lisping, But I must also admit that RTdid do some quality singing and I find him very personable.I'm also sure that Corelli has done some more than quality singing.
sugarbist 7 months ago
@mozzrt It seems that you have a habit of criticizing Corelli for lisping , even when he's not lisping. You also criticized Del Monaco for Lisping, which is the furthest thing from being accurate. You and I have the right to like or dislike any artist. However, you should at least me more honest with your opinions even if you don't care for a particular singer or tenor.I am not particularly fond of Domingo, but when PD does sing something well, I do comment positively. Enjoy
