it's a 5 minute penalty but it is a part of the game...players usually fight if they have a bad history or they fight to put some energy back into their team

To get this out of the way early, i'd like to say i don't follow NHL very closely as it's hard to access in the UK so i may be tremendously ignorant, but it seems a bit stupid to me that the commentators are calling it like a boxing match. Surely this should be hockey. Just cos it's on ice can't give them the right to start fights with each other so often that the commentators are that used to it? You don't see/hear that in football or NFL or rugby or any other sport really.

@jamesa213 they are that use to that. Fighting has decreased over the past 10 years. At this point you don't even see a fight every game, where there was several fights and usually team fights up until the mid-90's. The NHL finally wised up and started suspending players for leaving the bench and putting in the instigator rule. The sad part about this clip is Steve Smith was an excellent player and was never quite the same afterwards

@trulysarcastic Thanks mate. As I said, access to NHL is difficult in the UK as it's on at around 3am. I catch the occasion game but i thought this was a regular thing as I'm told it's one of the most violent sports around. It's always sad when a person who has a magnificent talent can never play to the same standard again after an injury, especially one as avoidable as this. Anyway, thank you for the response.

I watched this game live when I was a kid, and have been looking for this clip on youtube for a while.

Steve Smith broke his left leg in this fight and ended his season. I remember hearing after that Tie Domi called Steve Smith to see how he was doing.
