If you can't relate to these lyrics...just wait...until about 25 or 26, a few years into your career, where your unfulfilled dreams of what your life could have been are being eaten alive by the need to survive in a world that doesn't give a shit about them. And these lyrics will hit you like a ton of bricks.
@slitheringinterstate what a spot on description of the music and the band. the national are one of my favorite bands and boxer is one of my favorite albums of all time precisely because of what you said. and true to your description, i am a 26 year old, lost, confused kid. these lyrics are the epitome of what it means to be in ones twenties in this modern day and age
they do not sound anything like echo & the bunnymen! Those meaningless comparisons by people who know nothing about their music - I don't know. Why do I bother! Both great bands mind.

Beautiful song. It has the truth and sincerity of Weezer, the ambience of the Arcade Fire the mysticism of Enya and blends up into a delicious alternative frappuccino of excellence and tact.
truth and sincerity of weezer...like "we are all on drugs" and "you'll never do the things you want if you don't move and get a job" and "I'm just a no-class beat-down fool and I will always be that way"
Hm wait i was trying to make fun of you...maybe you have a point.
Read the lyrics. In this performance you can make out the lyrics better than on the album. Some of the most vivid lyrics I have ever read. I believe that "baby" is the narrator both apologizing to himself for his own self destruction as well as reassuring himself, perhaps if only with a false sense of hope.
One of the greatest songs I've ever heard in my life. The lyrics are brilliant. You have to hear the album version. This space is too cramped and forced. The lyrics. The lyrics...
I don't know how to do this...
