Read the lyrics. In this performance you can make out the lyrics better than on the album. Some of the most vivid lyrics I have ever read. I believe that "baby" is the narrator both apologizing to himself for his own self destruction as well as reassuring himself, perhaps if only with a false sense of hope.

One of the greatest songs I've ever heard in my life. The lyrics are brilliant. You have to hear the album version. This space is too cramped and forced. The lyrics. The lyrics...
