My father, Bob Block, conceived and wrote the entire Rentaghost series, which ran for 8 years. Fans will be sad to hear that Bob died peacefully at the age of 89 on 17th April 2011. His work will be fondly remembered by many.
@SteveTheMusicMan1 It must be nice to know your Father entertained a generation of 70s kids with Rentaghost,i along with everyone i've ever mentioned the series to remember it with great fondness. :)
@craig50 Thanks for that - yes, the family are very proud of what Dad achieved. It's a shame he didn't get more public recognition during his career, particularly by the BBC for whom he wrote so many series.
@SteveTheMusicMan1 Wow, I had no idea that it had run that long! I thought it was an early eighties thing, but it was mid seventies. Used to love it. Your Dad had a very good innings, by the way. Our generation should be so lucky.
oNe of the first things I saw on the internet was some Rentaghost fan-fiction about how Mr. Meaker came back from the pub drunk and started having sex with Miss. Popoff. As he was having sex his mind drifted to remember the great time he had in the pub with Timothy Claypole, he muttered "I wish Claypole was here". The magic amulet (that grants wishes) started flashing and Miss.Popoff disappeared to be replaced with Claypole. Meaker just carried on having sex with Claypole as he was drunk.
I missed this show,it really took me back to the golden age of my childhood, when food tasted so good, always attending your friends childhood party, shame they don't make it like this anymore
My main memory of this programme was them all running round the Meekers' living room for some reason at the end and discovering that all the chaos had been caused by a mysterious flashing pendant which the camera would zoom in on. There was also a robot aswell but can't remember where it fitted in to the story! : /
The original show was excellent! Then it went really crappy when they lost the older ghost, the modern guy who couldnt walk through walls and added a stupid witch. They turned an imaginative quirky idea into a crap panto. You can see I'm still upset haha :D
Yeah, after 30 years it still hurts me too. And what was the deal with crappy panto horse they added later? I thought that idea sucked and I was only six at the time........ :D
The actor playing the ghost from the past, sadlty died, then the modern guy decided to quit,so it left Mr Claypole with Molly Weir as Hasel McWitch and Lynda La Plante as Miss Popov, she left and Corrie's Audrey Roberts (Sue Nichols)joined as Miss Popov's cousin!
Interesting info - thanks. They could have continued the format with the same characters and different actors - seemed like the writers, producers and everyone else left too ;)
awesome classic t.v.Takes you back too many years but it is worth it.Love the theme tune as written by Mr claypole,it's a real shame it's not broadcast any more which is a total disgrace considering the total amount of repetitive crap on t.v at present
No probs I'm trying to get loads more RENTAGHOST on but my converter for canging dvd to mpegs is a bit knacked! But as soon as I sort out a new one there will be more!Cheers warenpeace66

The early days of Rentaghost were the best, before it turned into a hide the pantomime horse farce.

They were told to alter this version by BBC management as there were too many references to the occult eg. seances, mediums etc.

Sadly Mr. Claypole (Michael Staniforth) died back in 1987. He composed, played and sang all the theme tune versions.
I'd like to track down the episode filmed at Pagham (nr Bognor Regis) in the early 80s...
