OMG What we need is a Space Program that will take us to the exploration and exploitation of the Inner Solar System. Not just one place.
We need private space to do the grunt work to LEO. We need international cooperation.
But more importantly we need Congress and the Congresses to come to fully support the space program we make. This is more of a daunting task than the science to go beyond LEO.
@Mikevdog No doubt its an uphill battle all the way. But could reap some very nice rewards. In this case the weakness of money could propel nations to work together.
The private sector cannot and will not maintain the status of space travel as a public good and science driver. Privatized space travel in the U.S. will rapidly degrade to a joyride for the Robber Barons, further squandering financial capital while continuing to starve the physical economy.
NASA's assets and missions are going to China and India. If we're lucky, we'll get to do R&D leading to 1 or 2 prototypes. The project will get canceled and then magically reappear on a Chinese launch pad.
Wow-I'm only 45 minutes into this and I'm getting queasy - how could SpaceX NOT know about the M LAS test? I watched it on Youtube a couple of days after it was conducted. That's pretty scary. Their static test failed just last Tuesday. Looks like NASA and the Air Force are going to have to hold their hand and lead them along if they're ever going to "get off the ground". I think we should stick with Soyuz.
The budget cut was for going to the moon, now another country will beat us there and own it. Do you remeber how much respect and power we gained from being first on the moon?
ok i dont know how old you are.. but when the US.. went to the moon we did not claim to own it. I seriously doubt anybody would claim to own it...
I also believe its protected by treaty (though I may be wrong).
Anyway If you got any "non - us citizens" friends ask them if they care about how much we go into space. They may say the pictures are pretty, but nothing more.
I never said we owned the moon, and where do you think the people of the world will go when it gets overpoppulated? We have to make Mars a liveable planet and move through the universe to survive as a species. Its been the plan since the first rocketship.
well my apologies, you said that "another country willl beat us up there and own it", so I thought you that you thought we owned the moon lol.
Sure people can make the argument that we are overpopulated right now, but seriously do you think that the US is going to move 300+ million people off this planet, or for that matter 6 billion people( the rest of the world). They are going to send a few thousand. tell them to mate to repopulate the species. Thats not going to happen for a few decades.
no matter what is said, BO hates manned space flight. he hates excellence, risk, adventure, and big success. He is giving this play money to folks who contributed to his campaign.
they cannot do anything except, maybe, put 1,000 libs of cargo into orbit.
2. there is no magic to be had, to place payloads into orbit requires chemical rockets. that's how you do it. Beem me up , Scotty, is science fiction !! always will be. the Constellation program was designed using logic, and physics.
... we must find another way to do this besides using the chemical fired monsters like the Saturn V was. If NASA can remove launching rockets to LOE from it's budget, then an appropriate amount of monies will exist to invest in the necessary r&d to get us to Mars and beyond safely.
But a way must be shown. There seems to be these hints from Bolden (from here and previous interviews) that we are on the brink of some incredible propulsion system far more efficient then traditional rocketry.
I have been back and forth on this since the announcement was made to cut Constellation. I watched the program develop, and I saw the goals that were set.
This is what I think.
Constellation was a mistake. It was too early. Granted, yes, we were working on a rocket to get to Mars, but do we even have a remote understanding of the effects on a human sending them there? No. Not yet.
If we are truly going to begin manned missions to other places in the solars system, Mars and beyond,...
The obama administration promised increased NASA budget and a permanent manned base on the moon. Instead, he's thrown the whole program under the bus.

yes Going to space make us worth more... How is that? They study global warming and shoot pretty pictures...wiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And all for a few billion dollars a year.
Don't tell me you really think you will be flying around planet hopping or living on the moon in 10 years?

because going to the moon is more important then fixing problems on earth........
Nasa budget has been getting cut for years...
Its a reason that we have not went back to the
moon. There is a seriously lack of interest...
I read a poll like 67-73% agree to cut nasa's budget. Its really not a Obama thing.
DeveloperJermaine 2 years ago
Cuting us out of first place in the space race is one of the last things we want to do for our economy, it makes the US worth less.
