@rufflesthebird24 Ours do a 'bat' thing too! I've yet to catch it on video though, as they don't do it so often... I think it's them claiming possession of the cage when they do it?
@mikepepler yes! all of them looove to do things like this. Mine is 27 yo. It is old yes, but it does flip by doing the bat thing, it opens their wings fully extended. Shame he lost his crown. but he is my old brother. I love him. :D
OMG thats the same exact cockatiel i have. Same color too. Btw any one know how to tell if its a girl or a boy i rescued my cockatiel from being abused and neglected from someone so now she lives with me so can any one tell me what type of cockatiel she is and if it a boy or girl there a video of mine that i have under my uploads with her if someone would like to look at her and tell me
@vampirerose22 Just watched your video. Assuming the cockatiel is adult, it's usually easiest to tell if it's male or female by the orange patch on the cheeks, which is fainter on females. But yours is a white-face cockatiel, so the only other way is the tail feathers, which are usually striped on a female (like a juvenile). So I'd guess you have a male there. Does the bird sing a lot, and show off? (other male activities...)
Hi thanks for you response back my cockatile quil i just rescued over the summer doesn't sing much but usually does during the night alot. but its now just starting to chirp alot more during the day
@vampirerose22 Maybe as he/she settles in they'll sing more then... Ours have set times of day when they usually sing, e.g. first thing in the morning for a bit, then late morning if it's sunny. Afternoon is normally nap time, and then dinner time there's more singing.
that must be a staravia! (im in sinnoh region?) OMGOMGOMG GOTTA CATCH EM ALL FINALLY POKEMON EXISTS! * throws pokeball at ur cockatiel * OH DARN ITS A COCKATIEL
ahhh my pet bird luis use to do that but he died on month before he could turn one year old :( i miss him every day :( i have videos of him check them out if you want :'(
@Allgamesarefun Sorry to hear that, he looks very cute in the videos. Will you get another cockatiel? They normally live a lot longer, say 20 years, though a friend of ours has one that's over 30.
i got a grey and white cocktiel there males they will mate with female cocktiels after they meet each other (that what happened with my birds in one month)
My tiel displays when she's trying to scare things away (including hoses or whatever she doesn't recognize when she's attempting to nest) as well as when she stretches. We had her yawn on command for a little while, but she's not too keen on learning to hold her wings out.
@almostaskater62 Male birds should do it anyway, don't know if females do, as we have 2 males. Have you tried showing your bird the video of our birds doing it? That will often get them going! The only thing we trained them in was the sound they make while doing it.
@almostaskater62 Ah OK. Well what I'd try is saying 'eagle' (or whatever you like) and sticking your arms out. Or wait till she's doing it, then you join in. Then reward her with some food if she does it right. Ours often join in if we do it, and that was without reward training, but then again they are boys, so are probably just being competitive!
My lovebird used to do that, now my cockatiel does it, and if i copy him he goes crazy and starts flying round the room at 100mph lol, then lands and starts doing it again.
@mikepepler Actually the grey ones with the orange spot is the natural color, but the only man-made one is the lutino. All others can be found in the wild.
@CreamRocks1 I think we're in agreement then - grey with yellow face and orange spot is the most common colouring in the wild - I didn't know the other strains could be found in the wild, I'd assumed that they'd only become common with careful breeding...
@krapinica From an older comment: "All we did was every time Pete displayed his wings and made his chattering noise, we said "eagle". Sometimes we put our arms (wings!) out at the same time as saying it. He soon got the idea."
@xR1P3xSpuds Yes, definitely territorial! They do it upside-down sometimes too, but when they do that they don't shout at the same time, they stay silent.
@mrwudpecker I wouldn't exactly call it a song... ;-) It's what they do when they're either showing off or trying to scare away a bird they've seen outside the window.
@xpresidentrulez They don't fly away because they're happy where they are - they have food, water, company, things to play with and no predators. We do have net curtains on the windows though, as if they have a fright they can bolt for clear space, and that could result in them hitting the glass.
@girlsluvgir All the time? First thing - if she tries to bite you, don't flinch or make a noise - this can be 'fun', and encourage her to do it more. She is unlikely to actually hurt you. Second, will she take food from your hand? One of our birds is completely tame, but there are still times when he doesn't want to step on a finger and hill hiss and peck. Our other bird is less tame, and will only let your hand near him if you have food in it!
@mikepepler i have 2 cocktiels, jack and sparrow; male and a female. It laid eggs, I don't know what conditions are needed for them to hatch. Also, the mail is fearful and will fly away and not step up my hand. The female sits on shoulder and steps up; however, doesn't stay long with me.....but when i got food in my hand lol....the female goes nuts..it can do anything for food!....any suggestions how to completely tame a bird?
@jackindobox Taming a bird takes a lot of time and patience if they're not hand-reared, but it's worth doing. I'd buy a book on cockatiels if I were you, they have a lot of good advice on taming them.
@metaldave08096 Ah yes, you need to give them some time to get over it. We have 2 males, and we got Tom so Pete wouldn't be lonely when we were out. They get on fairly well, though Pete is definitely boss, as the older bird - Tom was still juvenile when we got him.
hi i have a female cockatiel , she is yellow masked white body cocatiel. now i am noticing that her yellowness is decreasing steadily do you know any reason behing this ??
@sangam061289 Not sure, I've never heard of that. Is she getting all the minerals she needs? We make sure ours have cuttlefish, and also give them vegetables every day, like cucumber, carrot, lettuce, dandelion leaves, etc. It takes a while to get them used to eating that stuff though!
@mikepepler maybe sangams bird is changing colour if there is another bird. because i've bought a book about cockatiels and it said sometimes female birds change colour depending on the area or if there is a male bird. and yep it takes so long for them to start eating!! my bird took couple of days to start eating lettuce. I put some strawberries in his cage but he didn't touch it at all and he tries to bite me only had him for a week now my next door neighbour gave him his a year and half old
@dogus194 I live here in INDIA. It just eats seeds. I have starting adding veggies to her diet but she isnt touching it. It either may be vitamins and mineral problem tht is responsible for her color loss...
@sangam061289 oh well my cockatiel didn't touch his lettuce for 3 to 4 days but i kept on chaging it daily and offering it with my hand so he'd know its food then after he tried it he loves eating lettuce :). i was adviced to give him vitamins once a week maybe you should buy him some vitamins and give it once a week in his water/food. but give him/her couple of days to get used to it. When i give him a veggie/fruit i tie it on a string and tie the string on the cage and he eats
@sangam061289 :) wash it really really really well as they might have germs or something from what i seen in this book and to get rid of chemicals. i've put lettuce for my bird today but he didn't touch it, guess he wasn't in the lettuce mood or i went out and he was alone at home all day. I live in london, how about you? :]
@lesleyhenriquez i am sorry that you dont have complete information about INDIA and pakistan relationship . Pakistan have seperated from INDIA. So they have our blood. And why are you bringing nationalities in between
@sangam061289 it is normal for female cockatiels to have less colour in the face than males, thus they often lose some of their colour as they grow older. :)
@sangam061289 my cockatiel is just the same as yours and she's a female...there are many cockatiels that happen like that...nothing will happen to them...don't worry....
@sangam061289 Don't worry about the yellow dulling. In female cockatiels they start losing the brightness of their yellow in their faces as the mature and get older. It's normal.
@Tweeky96 Not sure which bit you mean? At the start, he's saying "What y' doing", and "yeah!" (or at least he;'s trying to...), then he goes on to say "eagle" while displaying his wings.
Hello i got a cockatiel around 15 days back . should i allow my cockatiel to get out of the cage ? i fear it may get awway and will not enter the cage plz help..!
@sangam061289 1. Is it tame? If you put your hand in the cage, will it step onto your finger? If so, you have no worries about letting it out. 2. First time out of a cage, make sure you're in a room with doors and curtains/blinds closed. Have something for the bird to land on, e.g. a washing rack, bookcase, etc. 3. When you let the bird out, it will probably fly round like mad and bash into walls, ceiling etc, - both of ours did this. However, they usually only do this on the first go.
@mikepepler Thanks for the reply . I got this cockatiel from a pet store so it isnt hand tamed. it still doesnt sit on my finger instead when i open the cage door it tries to run. so i was asking should i allow to come outside of its cage. i fear it may try 2 fly away n wont return back 2 its cage backk.....
@sangam061289 You definitely need to let it out of the cage for some time each day to play/fly - ours are only in the cage at night. If you do it in a safe room (as I described earlier), have something obvious for the bird to land on, and have a cage you can lower over the bird you'll be fine. Once it's out, give it some space, and offer it some millet. You should be able to get it to take seed from your hand even if it's not hand-tame - try this in the cage first perhaps.
@sangam061289 if it goes wrong and the bird flies off but still in the room find out the birds favorite treats and put it in a small box and wait until the birds fully landed in it put the box in the cage ( make sure there is a rope to open the box) dont grab it when you have the chance one of my teachers bird died since some one was holding it and wouldn't let go the bird died of shock (sorry for my grammar )
@sangam061289 4. If the bird is tame, getting it back in the cage is easy, as you can take it in on your hand. If it's not tame (e.g. one of ours won't step on a hand), then once it's landed on your washing rack (or whatever you left for it to land on), then take the top part of the cage off its base, and lower it over the bird. Ours climb straight onto the cage when you do this, and then you can lower it onto the base. From there you can then transfer the bird into a big cage if you need to.
Your cockatiel has gorgeous feathers!

Actually generally with white faced cockatiels, the mails will have the white face while the females will have an all grey face.
same with the standard yellow ones, males will have yellow with the red patch while the females will have the red patch but little to no yellow

I put some strawberries in his cage but he didn't touch it at all and he tries to bite me only had him for a week now my next door neighbour gave him his a year and half old
dogus194 6 months ago
@dogus194 I live here in INDIA. It just eats seeds. I have starting adding veggies to her diet but she isnt touching it. It either may be vitamins and mineral problem tht is responsible for her color loss...
sangam061289 6 months ago
@sangam061289 oh well my cockatiel didn't touch his lettuce for 3 to 4 days but i kept on chaging it daily and offering it with my hand so he'd know its food then after he tried it he loves eating lettuce :). i was adviced to give him vitamins once a week maybe you should buy him some vitamins and give it once a week in his water/food. but give him/her couple of days to get used to it. When i give him a veggie/fruit i tie it on a string and tie the string on the cage and he eats
dogus194 6 months ago
@dogus194 thanks friend , i will surely try your string technique.. Which country you reside ?
sangam061289 6 months ago
@sangam061289 :) wash it really really really well as they might have germs or something from what i seen in this book and to get rid of chemicals. i've put lettuce for my bird today but he didn't touch it, guess he wasn't in the lettuce mood or i went out and he was alone at home all day. I live in london, how about you? :]

@sangam061289 it's the best thing to do.

@sangam061289 it is normal for female cockatiels to have less colour in the face than males, thus they often lose some of their colour as they grow older. :)
ryno2085 6 months ago
@sangam061289 my cockatiel is just the same as yours and she's a female...there are many cockatiels that happen like that...nothing will happen to them...don't worry....
JamesMorthon 6 months ago
@sangam061289 the bird is molting.females have less yellow than males
Sharksavior155 6 months ago
@sangam061289 Don't worry about the yellow dulling. In female cockatiels they start losing the brightness of their yellow in their faces as the mature and get older. It's normal.

Tweeky96 7 months ago
@Tweeky96 Not sure which bit you mean? At the start, he's saying "What y' doing", and "yeah!" (or at least he;'s trying to...), then he goes on to say "eagle" while displaying his wings.

Hello i got a cockatiel around 15 days back . should i allow my cockatiel to get out of the cage ? i fear it may get awway and will not enter the cage plz help..!
sangam061289 7 months ago
@sangam061289 1. Is it tame? If you put your hand in the cage, will it step onto your finger? If so, you have no worries about letting it out. 2. First time out of a cage, make sure you're in a room with doors and curtains/blinds closed. Have something for the bird to land on, e.g. a washing rack, bookcase, etc. 3. When you let the bird out, it will probably fly round like mad and bash into walls, ceiling etc, - both of ours did this. However, they usually only do this on the first go.
mikepepler 7 months ago
@mikepepler Thanks for the reply . I got this cockatiel from a pet store so it isnt hand tamed. it still doesnt sit on my finger instead when i open the cage door it tries to run. so i was asking should i allow to come outside of its cage. i fear it may try 2 fly away n wont return back 2 its cage backk.....
sangam061289 7 months ago
@sangam061289 You definitely need to let it out of the cage for some time each day to play/fly - ours are only in the cage at night. If you do it in a safe room (as I described earlier), have something obvious for the bird to land on, and have a cage you can lower over the bird you'll be fine. Once it's out, give it some space, and offer it some millet. You should be able to get it to take seed from your hand even if it's not hand-tame - try this in the cage first perhaps.

@mikepepler Thanks thanks a lot. i'll surely share my experience back..!!
sangam061289 7 months ago
@sangam061289 if it goes wrong and the bird flies off but still in the room find out the birds favorite treats and put it in a small box and wait until the birds fully landed in it put the box in the cage ( make sure there is a rope to open the box) dont grab it when you have the chance one of my teachers bird died since some one was holding it and wouldn't let go the bird died of shock (sorry for my grammar )
AcidWarhead97 7 months ago
@AcidWarhead97 Thanks friend for your suggestion. I will definetly remember . Well from which country you from, i am from INDIA !
sangam061289 7 months ago
@sangam061289 4. If the bird is tame, getting it back in the cage is easy, as you can take it in on your hand. If it's not tame (e.g. one of ours won't step on a hand), then once it's landed on your washing rack (or whatever you left for it to land on), then take the top part of the cage off its base, and lower it over the bird. Ours climb straight onto the cage when you do this, and then you can lower it onto the base. From there you can then transfer the bird into a big cage if you need to.
