Tragic story. Even more so because it's true. I recognize the actress that plays Maureen - Joanne Froggatt. She's currently co-staring in the Downton Abby series on PBS. Very talented.
@ttjoslin The only thing they didn't emphasise in this film was how young David and Maureen Smith were. 17 and 16. Other than that, the actors were all brilliant, and it would have made a great movie. I believe some of them got Baftas.
@ellenkingsley Have you watched The Moors Murder Code? (it's here on youtube) First time Ive ever heard Myra Hindley's voice. She sounds phony and a complete charlatan. Crocodile tears.
all i can say is the moors murders are tragic but also the parents of the murdered kids have some closure but only one person with no closure is the mother of keith bennett ... couldnt even bare to think what she's still going through .... also thanks for uploading as ive been wanting to watch this for a long time
Must have been awful for Dave + maureen! If he'd never have told the police they could have killed loads more kids and people re payed them by spitting and accusing!
Thanks a million for uploading this. I saw it as more of the story of the Smiths and how their lives were affected by Brady and Hindley's crimes, rather than it being the story of the killers themselves. It's clear that the story of Brady and Hindley is one of two psychopaths who each saw a mirror reflection the other. Psychopaths look human, but in fact are an entirely different animal, and like the rest of the animal kingdom, they can sniff out one another—and that's what happened here.
I also thought the first part of redemption was to confess your sins, but it was Ian Brady that confessed to the other 2 murders not her. If she was truly sorry she would have helped to find the body of Keith Bennet, she would have admitted her true roll in the murders, and taken responsibility for what she did insted of making excuses like she was under his spell.
@Dodger753 He only confessed because he heard her case was up for review, which means she might have been considered for release. He confessed to them to 'dob her in it' and make sure she never got out.
I honestly think that she's not sorry for what she did, without her Ian Brady wouldn't have been able to commit the crimes as successfully, and she must have known this yet she continued to help him. She picked them up and led them to him, and she knew what they were going to do to them. She also said that she was 'Under his spell', but he tried to do the same to Dave Smith but he didn't fall for it. I think she knew exactly what she was doing.
@BRUTUALTRUTH Yes and good on the BBC this shold never be forgoten! what we suppose to do brush it under the carpet like us brits are good at? fuck that!
@express777100 Im not saying hanging should be brought back for all or even most murders, but it should be available to our society in the justice system for certain crimes if deemed necessary.
@splinterbyrd i was in the security wing in durham when scum like brady and morris were being held in the late 60s lucky for them they was on a 43 so they was permanantly protected.

@splinterbyrd I kind of agree but surely the only people not suffering for the rest of their lives would then be the perpetrators. Death is final it's all over for them then. I don't even think it would be a deterant,
@MrJkhg1 There's actually no evidence that the death penalty was effective as a deterrent (it was still in force when Brady and Hindley actually committed their first murder) But families of victims usually say the supreme penalty would make them feel better, as if a balance has been restored. Certainly when faced with the gallows, prisoners invariably begged for a reprieve, even though that meant life imprisonment.
@BRUTUALTRUTH theres murderers and then theres child murderers m8 but yeah the bbc are corrupt and im so glad nick griffin can see that vote for him and brady will get hanged
@Mike40135 the sad fact is & this is a female phenomenen womEN LOVE MEN WHO KILL PARTICULARY men who kill a lot. brady and peter sutcliffe have women wrighting wanting to be with them. ted bundy had 30,000 women wanting to be with him. he raped and killed dozens of women. they even through out two sets of jury,s as women in them were fighting over him. & it was the same with rimerez the night stalker. this says a lot about women. excuse the spelling
@BRUTUALTRUTH For Christ sake... What is this obsession with making murderers into monsters? There is no such thing as "pure evil". All actions have a root. Even Hindley had a reason for what she did. Murderers are victims too, victims to their childhood, to their psyche...
@TheodorBjork You'd soon sing a different tune if yuour daiughtet wa stripped naked and rapoed by these bastard satanic mudrerers. Anoher do gooder living in a surreal comforrt zone!
@BRUTUALTRUTH You seem to be suggesting some barbaric society in which murderers are hanged upon capture, refusing to understand why they killed and thereby stopping future murderers...
Joanne Froggatt, George Costigan and Michael McNulty are great in this. Sean Harris and Maxine Peake also did fine jobs.
