Got to be one of the best Bond films. I struggle to decide between OHMSS, Living Daylights, and Goldeneye. But this one is a one of a kind, and a true christmas Bond film. I just love everything about it, it really hits the spot for me. The music really goes with the film, in so many different ways. I play this song every christmas, it just sets the season for me. I wish I could of been around to see it when it was first released!
This song was placed perfectly in the film, great song and another reason why OHMSS will never be bettered in the Bond series.
I'm a cinema projectionist and every year we play this song as part of a Christmas compilation album in the auditorium's before the show's start, and every year we get asked several times who sings it where it came from and can you still buy it, clever man that Mr Barry, gone but never forgotten.
Yes i'd liked to of seen him do Diamonds are forever, Telly Savalas could've reprised his role and then Lazenby could've spent the film bringing an end to Blofeld, Spectre and avenging Tracey. Connery was blatantly bored the entire time he did Diamonds are forever I guess that's what happens when Producers bribe actors!
@Alstom1995 I'm glad Lazenby didn't come back to do Diamonds Are Forever. Make no mistake, I love Lazenby. But no one can honestly say that DAF was a good film. It was pure shit. I enjoy OHMSS so much more because Lazenby only did one Bond film. It makes OHMSS stand out and shine even more (if that's even possible).
@bealio721 I couldnt agree more... D.A.F. was like a college student's senior prject in comparison to the other Bond films. It is a blemish of Connery, which wasnt HIS fault. Lazenby played the PERFECT type of Bond needed for OHMSS! It stands out in SO many ways as SUCH a unique Bond film.
By the way....R.I.P., Mr. John Barry. We WILL miss you!!
This theme works brilliantly - the normalcy of human experience vs. Bond's world of violence- made more poignant by Bond's vulnerability to his love for Tracy. The warmth of the Christmas sentiment is made ominous and menacing by the context of the pursuing SPECTRES.
Ha this song sounds quite corny on its own and you wouldn't think this would work in a Bond film, but it does - brilliantly. The innocent song playing on the speakers at the ice rink amist all the comotion. Then suddenly @ 2.50 Diana Rigg turns up. Great moment in a very underrated film.
yes it it... but is used quite correctly in the film with and atmospheric and dramatic purpose, and is unusual for any of the other Bond films.
That is proof of Peter Hunt's editing and directing skills. And that the story of OHMSS is the best because they had the chance to o creative things with it. Like putting this song.
This song does offer an ironic counterpoint in the film -- a children's choir singing a cheerful tune, skaters happily celebrating Christmas, while Bond is being stalked by Blofeld's murderous henchmen.
But the lyrics are ironic, too. It's sort of a bitter, edgy tune despite the chimes, cheerful horns, and cherubic chorus.
But what REALLY makes this scene work is the sight of Bond, dejected and demoralized and waiting to die, being rescued by Tracey.
Along with a 'potential' possibility that these lyrics could be leant to Bond himself within the context of this unique Bond outing. Bond, the lone man carrying out the orders of the state. All the casual sex, is one thing. But as the song lyrics point to, sunshine and raindrops are not enough for growth. Real friendship and kindness are needed, and most of all they need LOVE". Bond finds a true love in this movie, and the possibility of settling down. But that is ultimately torn away from him.
Totally agree with you...this song works on two levels. On one hand, it's a great Xmas song, but in the context of the movie, it's a forerunner for doom.

omh haha compared to the other songs in the OHMSS soundtrack this song sounds like so out of place ..like out of a kid's bedtime story album from the 1970's

Almost forgotten Bond Music performed by NIna exactly 41 years ago.
The Children Chorus is brilliant and cheerful in contrast to Nina's
sombre singing of three stanzas. Over all, the song if full of hope
as expressed by Nina and Love as rendered by the Children.

lol this in a Bond movie? :P I remember this in the movie, after Bond escapes Piz Gloria, in the village at the skating rink, its playing.

Anybody else notice the synthesizer bassline in this song? Fits nicely with the tone of the rest of the soundtrack, I think...

In the book OHMSS, Bond comments how people are being killed in the season of Christmas. This is very fitting.
