I saw this sadly uncomfortable interview when it aired & thought to myself "ok John, it's time for you to go." (Of course he lasted another 8 yrs. lol) He was just so hopelessly out of touch, never more so than when he asked Paul if he still liked to compose. Aside from the fact that he was there to promote his movie, for which he wrote the music!, PM was only 42 at the time. But it was like Carson was asking a 90-yr-old Thomas Edison whether he still liked to tinker in the lab.
@fretbuzz59 What a silly comment from you. As an interviewer you ask questions that your guest can answer with ease. An interviewer wants to entertain an audience composed of some people who may not be that knowledgeable with the activities of the guest. You're NOT trying to strike out the guest with a curve ball. Carson is throwing the ball right over the plate so that McCartney can hit a home run.
@61dodgelancer You're not very perceptive. Johnny didn't ask something insightful, for example, if there's a difference in the writing process compared to yrs ago. No, he asked whether he still actually does compose. Paul's reply, in words & tone, reveals what he thought of that question: yeah, I write my own material, John. "John" at the end is especially significant. He said "John" but he might as well have said "you stupid twit."
Wow, the contrast between his attitude then and now is totally startling. He loves talking about the Beatles now, and you can see his discomfort whenever the subject came up in this interview.
both had genius!

Carson was so clueless and probably intimidated by McCartneys enormous fame...It showed in this clip- Letter5man/stern are much better interviews
