An increase in global seismic activity is partially due to adjustment of the earths crust due to the unusually rapid release of contained oil. The rapid emptying created a massive cavity that required filling and shifting. This will continue much like the slow movement of glass, which is actually a liquid. The crust has built-in elasticity to adjust for moon pull, but not so much for vertical changes of crust pressure from massive eruptions and releases. Crust movement feeds on itself.
