I have been breeding discus for a while now. And the answer is.. No one actually knows for SURE untill she starts laying eggs. Some signs which CAN work but don't always is the bottom fins are smaller on a female. And i think that's about it
Some other signs which allow you to identify the sex is through the fins and the forehead structure. To distinguish the male discus you have to look carefully at the pointy, yet lengthy Anal and Dorsal fin, HOWEVER not all type of discus strain will develop this. Another way would be looking at the forehead, the male will develop a lump, but once again, not ALL type of discus strain will have this. The only sure way is when they breed, though it may be hard for SOME people to distinguish.
