I have Ram Air IVs on a beefy 400 in a 74 Lemans. It will runs circles around my 74 Cutlass with a built 455. With the 273 gears, I've had the Lemans at about 150 MPH. I match ported the intake and heads.
The thing about testing various cars against each other is that rarely does the rear gear ratio get mentioned. For example if a car with 4.11 gears beats a car with 3.55 gears is that a level playing field? I would argue no.
Ram Air IVs were laughably underrated. Especially when put in a firebird because Pontiac mandated that the GTO had to be their fastest production car. The firebirds weighing 500lbs less ran circles around the Goats so a throttle stop was put on the birds to prevent WOT AND they weren't even matched to a true dual exhaust in the birds, thus they were rated at 345. Some places like Royal Bobcat would take off the governor.
for you Quadrajet haters, it powered the beastly Ram Air IV, lol!
killer car man, the car is a beast :D my nephew was recently given a all original '70 gto non ram air 350hp th400 it's #'s matching engine &drivetrain it still even has it's dual snorkel air cleaner &valve covers ,it's been sitting for 12yrs. though and the whole floor board is needs to be replaced ,the a-pillar meets the roof is rusting through silver dollar size holesmotor n trans need rebuilding lotsmore etc .the car is orig. gold w/white top w/white int. we got alot of work to do !
they had a ram air 7 to but it never made production a fella named nunzi that runs nunzi performance i think has one and it was featured in high performance pontiac magazine its awsome
Never heard of the ram air V, but not surprised they had one. Pontiac in those years(60s) just didn't like the idea of losing in the performance wars.
@RennyGd - They even had an experimental SOHC 427 Hemi haha. I believe they have info about it on the performance years forums, they had a magazine article talkin about it.
the ram air package had 3 stages. III, IV, and the ultra rare V. each had different progressivly better cylinder heads, ram air header-like exhaust manifolds, special camshaft, high rise intakee
and a carter or q-jet four barrel. this in regard to the classic ram air, not the LS1 posers with thier high flow intakes only.
what exhaust its funny, it doesnt matter if its a ram air or not, its not moving no airs going over it which means air cant be caught by the hood and cant be pushed into the intake just putting it out there its wierd its like it has a vtec when it hits 5th gear, it screams pontiac baby and im only 14 yrs old and know this i also know about very ram air 5
In the GTO Pontiac V8 sense... when someone says its a Ram Air 2,3,4 or 5 it isnot refering to just the air intake system but, the motor itself. Similar to the terms V-Tech and LS1... some of the differences in the Ram Air series engines Pontiac used were things like the Carbs either being a Carter or Rochester... completely different valvetrains and ect. Also with the Ram Air packages you got chromed valve covers, the ram air system and a 10-bolt posi track system.
Its "nhra" stock. Its carefully balanced and blueprinted and ready to take on all comers! Bring your bias ply tires and exhaust manifolds and lets party!
There is a video on Youtube of a tv show comparing 6 muscle cars on a dragstrip. All were 1969 models. There was a Shelby GT500, Superbee 440/6, Yenko 427 Camaro, Javlin, etc. Anyway, the 69 Ram-Air IV GTO beat them all. The driver said "this car is set up very well, better than the rest". Is that your GTO in the vid you submitted? I have a 70 w/455 mildly built. I pulled the orig. mtr.& trans and put it in the garage. I drive the 455 almost everyday. Bless you.
Yes that is my car in the show. They complained that I sent them a ringer.......too @#$%^bad! I love Pontiacs and this was as good a time as ever to make them shine!
This engine is .60 over a standard bore 400 ci. with the Melling stock replacement cam installed 3 degrees advanced.

If i had to guess? 450 hp
mercmarc 1 year ago
@mercmarc Good guess!! It made 388 to the rear wheels which would translate to approx. 450HP at the flywheel.

@brunobel damn man, how do u know that, or did it say on the dyno (that car is epic)

Can you tell me what the Ram Air IV dyno'd at?
a40sgal 3 years ago 4
If stock it should have gone to a 370 pull.
kyle1281989 3 years ago
at the crank and thats a understatement they said, they were more like 400+, unless ur saying they are putting 370 down after
dajudge1969 3 years ago
@kyle1281989 the ram air IV's were GREATLY under rated..... they were more along the line of 430+ hp at the crank
nm730d 1 year ago
@a40sgal I dont know what he pulled but I do know the RA IVs usually dynoed at 400-410 horses depending on the ambient air temperature.
