As usual M; Alagna does not sing but shouts and thinks this is the way to be convincing! He's the worst comedian that ever existed on a stage and I will never understand the snobism that made his success; Recently in Paris he has literally massacred Giordano's Francesca da Rimini. I completely agree with the decision of Milano' Scala to fire him a few years ago. The only moment in Rondine's production where he is at last credible is at the end of the last scene for personal reasons.
I am biased as I bought this when I was in Italy, then met my husband to be who when after cooking our first dinner, I gave it to him. We then went to see this production, Then engaged and married.
Domingo and TeKanawas recording are my all time favorites.. TeKanawa sings with absolutely no effort in every note.. she simply loves the part.. ie at 2:14 effort here with Kiri shere bliss
To Gheorghiu's defence one must say that she was pushed by the MET management to sing the transmission evening having taken all sorts of medication to make it, being seriously ill! I watched it and without knowing then what was happening, I thought she looked downright terrified at moments. Reading later what she went through made sense...
One can notice a tremendous difference of her being in control in the bit posted with Filianoti.
I would like to hear Ruggero's first Bb sung lightly con tenerezza. The score also indicates a decrecendo which Alagna does not give us. It's not an easy feat but I prefer tenderness to power in Puccini's lighter operas.
It may be somewhat of a gimmick to have Gheorghiu and Alagna playing lovers, but it really finishes the quartet nicely when you see them kissing like their characters really would be.
It has passed exactly a year since I didn't listened again and again, the whole day long a song from YouTube. In Jan08 it happened with Isis Gee - For Life, the Polish representative for the EuroContest 2008, now in Jan09 it happens again with this quartet, surrounded by the chorus, a marvelous performance at The MET indeed. I'm deeply proud to know Angela Gheorghiu is our girl, a romanian one !
For me this remains testiment to Puccini at his very finest. A show stopping moment made all the more intense by Roberto's clear love for Angela. Magical.
no no, it's in the score. magda has 3 high c's in this, lisette 2, ruggero an optional one that almost every tenor does, but sometimes the prunier will take it if he has it. this is like, my 2nd fave puccini opera and i've studied the score for years. it's sooooo amazingggggg.
In "Chi il bel sogno" she really was nervous, that's an aria that she sings since she was a teenager, maybe not the best day, but see her nervous makes (for me) the aria more intense. My question is (I don´t know if I'm wrong) Did they make a mistake in the minute 2:20??? Listen well
I was at the performance.......Listen to the clip of Doretta's Aria from the beginning of the Opera. Gheorghiu is obviously nervous and struggling. She looks as if she is not sure what is going to come out of her mouth. The aria does NOT go well. But she "sang" her way into the performance, and from this quartet on she was firing on all cylinders.
i saw it at the movies, and you are so right. But, im still doubting that she did it on purpose just to 'spice' the performance. Btw, i think it was the first transmition to Romania...
Gheorghiu is amazing as always, but it's more surprising here because she was having a cold and even thought of cancelling. Her voice is totally recovered after an insecure start. Alagna is becoming more and more a "dubious" tenor, alternating moments of lyric beauty with many others of strained or shrill notes. But he's good enough. The music alone is so beautiful it can hardly sound unimpressive with such complex use of contrapunto and so many musical tricks Puccini knew how to use so well.
What a Great Piece! :)
I recently had the opportunity to Sing Ruggero's Part @ Washington National Opera's Opera Institute, and i will never forget it.

The music is so beautiful, but this opera's libretto is just badly written. It's a shame; had it not been for that, it may have been a masterpiece.

How sad that this is the finale for Roberto and Angela appearing together. Also sad is that the DVD is in 4.3 format and not 16.9. WHY???

Merveilleux Alagna... la plus belle version, une ligne de chant parfaite pour un morceau d'une grande difficulté vocale... un grand artiste.

I LOVE this part of the Opera. We just did it in my College Orchestra. Everytime we played this, I got instant chills. LOVE Puccini

The conductor started out too slow, sort of dragged everything out. He finally had the right pace after the middle.

Stunning music! She WAS sick as I went to the next performance a few days later and she cancelled. Her standby was Maureen O'Flynn.

Lui e decisamente meglio di Lei...dopo la disastrosa aida a La scala qui alagna trova una parte piu adatta a le sue scarce qualita.
La moglie e disastrosa da ogni punto di vista.
