@tpiom India is only an observer nation and has said it has no desires to acually join. If you look at public opinion polls they feel 7 times closer to the US than China , and even feels close to the US than Russia who it had always had a good relationship with.
If you consider observer nations part of the alliance, then i guess Russia, the Ukraine, Sweden, Switzerland and Austria are all in NATO too.

@apresesco It also had a lot to do with the proposed restructuring of SCO that would greatly reduce the influence of observer states, in order to encourage full application. However to counter this it was also proposed that membership obligations be lessened in order to offset the security concerns of the organisation. This is what drew the attention of the UPA (who just got done winning an election at that)

@apresesco Even Bush 2, the worst president the US has ever had has a higher approval than disapproval rating in India. The USA is also India's biggest target destination for immigrants. Do you really think a few offset politicians would win over everyone else in the country?
It's been a stalemate for over a decade, China wants Pakistan in SCO, and Russia wants India- yet chosen one isolates the other and been a source of constant infighting.

@apresesco Progress can't be made even from the perspective of the current SCO members, and until recently no one in the Indian government has ever expressed anything but the opposite. Now all the sudden a few politicians said they had interest and you think it means the whole country is just waiting to sign on the doted line? I know many Indians and they all have two things in common, a hate for Pakistan, and extreme mistrust toward China.

It wouldn't suprise me that China would want to 'reform' the IMF as they are being taken off the receiver list of nations and placed on the donor list. Further, even it it would to be the case, what has that got to do with a few statements made by a few Indian politicians?

At present China is India’s largest trading partner while India China’s top trading partner in South Asia.
