Little Richard´s honking melody is superb!. Little Richard knows how to tweedle, he knows how to do an incredible "falsetto" and he also knows how to rock every song he sings. That´s why he is the king of rock and roll.
when i was a teenager this guy was the coolest cat on the raido. remember we had no 8 track no cassett tapes no cds. only hi-fedility phonographs and raido. we rocked out to little richard . great performer.
@campwill3 i wasn't even born when this was made, but i've always had a diverse taste in music and discovered his stuff when i was a teen. still love it.
@irocladdreadnought All Little Richard did was sing and take credit for shit that wasn't his. Chuck Berry birthed Rock and Roll and without him we wouldn't have what we do today. If Little Richard didn't exist what would we be missing?
@demsmyfeet Chuck Berry took credit for plenty that wasn't his as well. I can't even imagine r'n'r without either of them. Richard with the horn-driven music and Chuck with the guitar. You need them both. Plus, listen to Richard's voice - the unadulterated enthusiasm. It's infectious. I won't pick one of them over the other.
@demsmyfeet I love Richard and think his singing is unparalleled for rocking energy, but you are 100% right on the money when you talk about Chuck Berry. The guy singlehandedly raised the level of Rock and Roll to an art form. He showed that this new music could be a vehicle for complete stories and personal expression not just nonsense lyrics and catchphrases. Because of Chuck Berry Rock and Roll became a legitimate songwriting art alongside every other.
@jackiechampion Yeah-no Berry, no Lennon. But Berry always disappoints with his sloppiness and dismissal of his own legacy. Little Richard never sullied his reputation and always rocked with legit arrogance.
@saguaroboy I agree with you, Chuck too often treats his shows like just a paycheck. The legacy thing you mention is interesting. I think if he'd been given the praise and exalted position in music history he deserves he'd appreciate his legacy more. He seems to not understand his own essential importance to R&R. There should be shelves of books written about his impeccable songcraft and innovative guitar genius. Where are the statues of him commemorating his musical contribution to the world?
Saw Little Richard back in the sixties when he was brought in to prop up the flagging Everley Brothers tour in Uk - he brought the house down - drove the audience mad - it was the single most impressive gig I ever saw. Interesting though to see what Elvis did with this original number - he really did rip it up.
"Have a ball" means to have a party, have fun. "Ball it up" could concievably mean have a party. "Ball" means to screw or otherwise engage in sexual coition.
A dance or disco in the 50's was referred to as a ball ( from the term "ballroom" meaning dance hall) To "have a ball" means to enjoy yourself, or have a great time. It does not mean in any particular way - only that you enjoy yourself ! or have fun ! (or dance to the music).
Many thanks for posting the original, philly0080 !
i know people will have a go, and i love little richard and this version is great, but i really prefer john lennon's version, he mixed it with buddy holly's ready teddy, and his voice just sounds amazing on that song. it's faster than this one too...

88 was one of Oldsmobile's MODEL names for its cars, as well, from the late '40s into the late '60s, I believe, when the name "Delta 88" took over.
