If you think about Vince Neil enough, it sounds like he is singing. I've tried this over the years trying to figure out if there were any similar singers to Andy. They have a similar range but the music of course is drastically different.
VP has just a touch of influence from many bands but they have a great sound and way about them. They do a much better job than Dream Theater at the heavier songs, DT loses the melody and James struggles. But both are good in their own ways.
Ooh, I disagree. For me, James captures the essence of the rage and malice in the music brilliantly - and manages to vary the colouring of the vocals. Perhaps they sometimes become less melodic, but the phrasing is still there, and to me it speaks exceedingly powerfully. They're both awesome bands though.

it might be live, but sure there's some kind of cleaning after recording. it's clearly a promotional video. lots of bands do that, iron maiden too.

DT has a feeling. It takes some time to digest, but there it is. If you dont feel the soul in SDOIT or in A Change Of Seasons, then youre just not getting it. VP has feeling too, only it is easier to find than DT's. They both ROCK!

DT has no soul... amazing technique but they lack emotion, I can sincerely say I've heard only one DT that makes you feel something else than "wow that's hard to play", nothing against them but there are a lot of bands out there and they do not sound like DT in anyway so enjoy DT and enjoy the other bands without making dramma out of who is better.

Why is it every time a prog band gets shown on youtube, people always have to bring up Dream Theater? It's either "They're better than DT" or "DT are better" or "These guys are DT clones"
No one can play prog music of any kind anymore without people comparing them. I'm a big DT fan, but people are either bashing them, or bashing the band in the video.
Even bands like Porcupine Tree who sound nothing like them get compared.

That is because Andy Kuntz has a background in stage show musicals. Jesus Christ Superstar is one. In fact if you research the Abydos cd, it is loosly based on that classic musical
hes probably one of the only that sounds amazing live. The dude from helloween, and james labrie from DT. also nils from pagans mind sounds incredible live
Sure they might be a little easier to listen to, compared, to Dream Theater. Most people would perfer Kuntz's vocals over Labrie's whiney falsetto. But come on! All this stuff's been done before.... Basically every song I've listened to is something right out of Dream Theater. How could anyone respect VP more than DT? Not saying this is bad at all, though.
OK, show me something similar with DT. I've listened to both bands for almost 10 years. They are very different, the only thing in common is: singers with wide range, incredible skills. Everything else is different, song structures, melodies, vocal lines.
It's funny you should say "all been done before" considering what DT have done in the last 8 years (almost nothing new)...
I am tired of people making Dream Theater comparisons to every progressive metal band. I can't really hear much (if any) Dream Theater influence on Vanden Plas.
Not that I'm saying they weren't influenced by DT, Stefan has said said so himself in an interview. But I am saying that their styles are quite different and the constant DT comments on every progressive metal band are getting annoying.
VP is a great band that I am just getting into. They have finally made their own sound. Love the dynamics. Can't stand Black or Death metal because there are no dynamics. Just a million mph all the time.
there's tons of underground Death and Black Metal that is very good, you probably aren't listening to the right stuff. Not too sure what you call "dynamics" (unless referring to a particular instrument) but you might like progressive death metal(Cynic, later Death, Atheist) or Avant-Garde blackmetal
i would say, OHHH my fucking god, this is the first time I listen to this band and they're totally mind blowing, yet, I wouldn't make a comparison to dream theater, I don't think that's what any of the two bands would want, each one has its own stile and technique, making a comparison just to say one is best than other would only show how immature you are in terms of music appreciation, it's best to take the good things of each band and make bigger your music acknowledge.
Dream theater's best album is there newest one, because they have two tracks on it which sound brilliantly put together, and thats the best songs that they have up to date.
Vanden plas kick the shit out of dream theater, i have heard every songs by both so dont go saying that i havent heard all of there songs coz i have, Vanden plas make songs that sounds better together and yes they are very tallented, maybe just below dream theater indivually, but all together and the music that they make is better than dream theaters.
yeah, totally agree. especially in retrospect. DT doesnt make good music anymore. their albums these days are TERRIBLE. and overall DT can be repetitive, but VD (bad abreviation) keeps it fresh

why do people always want to compare DT to VP? They are unrelated in every way. Just enjoy the fantastic sounds BOTH Bands give us and pray they dont sell their souls like the Metallicas of the world
The main riff in this song is totally like The mirror's main riff. How can you not hear the resemblance? They're not the same bands but they're as closely related as cats and lions (by that i mean it's easy to tell the differnence of course, but still very similar, not that one of the bands is superior but i couldnt'find a better analogy :p)
I don't think one band is better than the other. I like the compositions of VP better and I like the musicianship of DT better. But I like both bands a lot don't get me wrong ;-)

Agreed, their musicianship may be slightly inferior (although we shouldn't speak in terms of inferiority, I should say slightly less amazing) but the composition of this song is better than the bulk of DT songs...
I don't know if it just the quality of the video but the singer sounds a bit like he's struggling to be heard over the instruments. Still good though.
Yeah VP do havea strong DT sound, which is no bad thing. The majority of modern prog bands seem to have undercurrents of DT and Queensryche about them. these guys still have a long way to go before they're DT good though.

You can look at/listen to a lot of progrock/powermetal bands on youtube, but all singers suck in performing live.
Except for a few, Andy Kuntz is really amazing live.

Sure they might be a little easier to listen to, compared, to Dream Theater. Most people would perfer Kuntz's vocals over Labrie's whiney falsetto. But come on! All this stuff's been done before.... Basically every song I've listened to is something right out of Dream Theater. How could anyone respect VP more than DT? Not saying this is bad at all, though.

OK, show me something similar with DT. I've listened to both bands for almost 10 years. They are very different, the only thing in common is: singers with wide range, incredible skills. Everything else is different, song structures, melodies, vocal lines.
It's funny you should say "all been done before" considering what DT have done in the last 8 years (almost nothing new)...

VP is a great band that I am just getting into. They have finally made their own sound. Love the dynamics. Can't stand Black or Death metal because there are no dynamics. Just a million mph all the time.

there's tons of underground Death and Black Metal that is very good, you probably aren't listening to the right stuff. Not too sure what you call "dynamics" (unless referring to a particular instrument) but you might like progressive death metal(Cynic, later Death, Atheist) or Avant-Garde blackmetal

This video was shot in 2002 at Wacken Open Air festival, and I was there! Right in the middle of the crowd :)
Vanden Plas were definitely one of the highlights of the festival, as you can imagine ;)

i would say, OHHH my fucking god, this is the first time I listen to this band and they're totally mind blowing, yet, I wouldn't make a comparison to dream theater, I don't think that's what any of the two bands would want, each one has its own stile and technique, making a comparison just to say one is best than other would only show how immature you are in terms of music appreciation, it's best to take the good things of each band and make bigger your music acknowledge.

Dream theater's best album is there newest one, because they have two tracks on it which sound brilliantly put together, and thats the best songs that they have up to date.

Vanden plas kick the shit out of dream theater, i have heard every songs by both so dont go saying that i havent heard all of there songs coz i have, Vanden plas make songs that sounds better together and yes they are very tallented, maybe just below dream theater indivually, but all together and the music that they make is better than dream theaters.

yeah, totally agree. especially in retrospect. DT doesnt make good music anymore. their albums these days are TERRIBLE. and overall DT can be repetitive, but VD (bad abreviation) keeps it fresh

The main riff in this song is totally like The mirror's main riff. How can you not hear the resemblance? They're not the same bands but they're as closely related as cats and lions (by that i mean it's easy to tell the differnence of course, but still very similar, not that one of the bands is superior but i couldnt'find a better analogy :p)

Agreed, their musicianship may be slightly inferior (although we shouldn't speak in terms of inferiority, I should say slightly less amazing) but the composition of this song is better than the bulk of DT songs...

The style is similar, but you can hear the difference. Both bands kick ass. I love'em both, but I dare to say Andy Kuntz is a better singer.

Yeah VP do havea strong DT sound, which is no bad thing. The majority of modern prog bands seem to have undercurrents of DT and Queensryche about them. these guys still have a long way to go before they're DT good though.
