God bless you for doing this. You have no idea how nice it is to actually see how one of electronic musics greatest crafts together his music. Very inspiring =D
Hiya Airbase! I want to thank you for your tutorials and especially this one. I learned a lot from it and made my first production. You can check it out in my channel. I know it's not very good or anything but it's a start :)
Thanks the helpful tutorial. It's great to see what goes into this type of track. Do you normally use loops or would your advice be to learn how to make the drum groove from the ground up?
Hey Airbase! First of all you make great music, and this is one of the best tutorials on the internet. My question though is, what should be the volume levels for mastering, so not all the sounds are all over the place. I want to achieve that clean sound but my volume levels just don't seem right =/
im very very curious how did you eq mid bass 1 and 2, that they sound so glued. I would be thankful since i have little problem with layering sounds. greets
Your ear for a good melody jezper is possibly the best out of any trance artist ive come across, most of your tracks are emotional, powerful and uplifting, this clip you demonstrate could easily be made into a song in itself, amazing work......
Hey there Airbase, can you show us how to make some basses in Sylenth. In particular the first one in this video. I'm not sure what the oscillators look like in 'Part B' of Sylenth
This is an amazing tutorial for beginners, only problem is so many of the beginners will now have the "airbase sound" :D
I have one question... how do you offbeat sidechain the pad without the kick playing? In Logic, using sidechain compression on something will only work in "realtime", for example once the kick is muted, there will be no sidechain compression on the pad..
Having a kick in a muted channel running all the way through the track for side chaining. The signal still triggers the compressor even though it is not audible.
Great Tutorial! You should do one on making a instrumentline from the bottom, well maybe not from scratch but at least some tuning inside the vsti and maybe which effects you use too achieve that fantasticly clear and flowing sound
You mean bringing the synth up? I'm just clicking the little wrench button on the synth module. follow the mouse and you can see where I'm clicking to bring it up. The little button turns from grey to yellow when the window is open.
seen a few of your videos n you seem like you know wut youre doin do wuz wonderin... on this video particularly, why do you have each drum for a different track instead of usin drum racks? I dunno if theres a plus to doin it your way or if you maybe did it just to show people wut was goin on...
As you see him doing, cut away the low frequencies to not mudd the mix to much when adding new sounds. And then use Sidechain to also push away some sounds when the kick hit.
Tjenare, Jezper.
It's amazing to see the different pieces come together, as well as showing many how much one should make use of the effects and compressors to make a perfect sound.
In FL Studio I used to use a separate silent kick track just for the sidechain. In Ableton you also have the option of sending the kick track to the sidechain compressor "pre-fader" (which is default) so you can actually then automate the channel fader to take the kick out, but the kick will still be sent to the sidechain (because it's pre-fader). A separate kick track gives you more flexibility, but can be harder to maintain... there's pros and cons and it's just preference really.
It seems weird that you used a separate muted kick just for the purposes of side chaining. I don't use Live personally but surely you can set the threshold and scale and other parameters so that you don't need to do that?
You can ofcourse side chain anything to anything. I use this method as it's the most customizable way for meto do what I want to do. Or do you have any other suggestion that is better?
As I said, I don't use Live, but in my DAW it is possible to take whatever waveform the kick produces and shape it using parameters to get the right sidechaining effect without using a mute kick. Since I understand Live to be quite a mature DAW I figured you should be able to do the same. But the muted kick idea is cool too, I just never thought of doing it that way since it shouldn't be necessary.
I assume you mean you can form the kick that is the kick of your track (or any other source) as the input for your side chaining. The reason I do it this way, is because the kicks I like to use are often punch with a long bassy tail. I like to keep them that way, while for the side chaining I want something much shorter. Most times I reduce that muted kick to only a click.
No, I mean I can form the automation that is created from the kick sound independently of the kick sound. The plug-in I use samples the sound peaks but doesn't doesn't modify the sound in any way - it simply allows it to pass through. However, the controls of the plugin allow you to shape the waveform that it perceives and that can then be used as an automation source for however many tracks you like.
I'm not sure I follow at all. But if that method works for you, great stuff. Let me know if you have a tutorial on how your method is done, as I'd like to see it in live action!
One thing i don't get after checking the project file that how is it possible that u have different notes in the different views in abletom? I checked the Sub bassline and dunno why is that..
Ok so i meant that in "Session view" i see 4 clips in the column of sub bassline which include the notes. And in "Arrangement view" those notes are different in sub bassline. So u couldn't use those from the session view :D It makes a completely different melody :P Sorry i can't really make clearer, im not a really beginner and i dont know all expressions connected to these stuffs.
Thanks for the great tutorial and the downloadable project file.
I am new to ableton and don't understand how you got the midi note editor to play your vengeance kick samples. When I load a sample into a clip it automatically switches to an audio clip and I cannot do step sequencing in the midi editor like you did in your project. Is this something that changed in Ableton Live 8 or is there a special way to load samples into a midi note editor ?
Jezper.. you rock for taking time to do these.. and especially for being open enough about it to share the ableton file, which is something great producers very rarely would do.
I like this tune. It sounds very Alphazone but with an Airbase twist. So tell me, why the name Airbase? Would you consider producing other genres of dance music or is trance your one and only passion? Congrats on having the guts to produce a tutorial like this. Sadly, a lot of producers in the scene are reluctant to help others as deeply as you have for fear of giving others an advantage or giving away their 'secrets'. Tutorial suggestion: track arrangement - intro, breakdown, peak, outro etc.
I noticed on your bass lines that you didn't add an auto filter to the actual track.
I'm still learning things and thought that, for example, when creating your sub bass you would add an Auto-Filter to that channel and cut away all the high end frequencies until you got that very subby sound. But here, all you did was use the filter in the synth.
Would it be wrong to use both the filter on the synth and also include an auto filter?
I like how you make your stuff radio-ready straight from Live. I was going to ask you what do you use for mastering - how many plugins on master channel do you have on top of all of this... Seems like none... :-)
Thank you one million times Airbase For this tutorial I was thrilled that (for the first time)i could actually watch a tutorial by a pro who makes great tunes thank you and keep making tutorials if you feel like I was absolutely thrilled by this =D
It's easier to manipulate (do breaks etc.) the kick in Simpler and have it as a midi than copy/duplicate it in arrangement view. I also think it is a bit easier on the cpu, but I'm not 100% sure about this...
Jezper, if you fleshed out this tune some more it would be amazing. I loved the feel of that small snipet. Thanks for another great tutorial.. you've made me abandon FL Studio all together for Ableton. :)
Great job. I am not into Trance style, but your tutorials are so much better than videos made by dance pruducers "gurus" like ones sponsored by the Computer Music magazine, if you know what i'm talking about.........
Hey Jezper, awesome project and iniciative, thanks.
I've been studying this project and I saw bass 1 and 2 they look very similar in the frequencies.
I know the project is not finished. but what would be your approach to avoid the masking effect between those two sounds playing almost same notes and they have almost same frequency.
FL Studio is good...thats what i use. I also use Ableton but the learning curve is real steep in my opinion, i use it for certain things but not for everything. Mainly i use FL id try it out if ur looking for something new
I agree with you. The interface of Fl studio seems more logical to me and easier to learn how to use. In Ableton I don't really understand the interface, what is the equivalent in Ableton of the step sequencer that we have in FL or the mixer. That's what I don't know and I don't understand. good thing it can be used via Rewire, cause I only need those FX and some sounds because their quality is very good on Ableton
It took me a while when i first started using Ableton to figure out the "sequencer" and how to use it. There are some good tutorials flying about around on youtube check some of those out...goodluck. But yeah, FL doesnt sound as good to me in the end as ableton
I like Cubase myself because it has a nice big sequencer window and everything is just big (on a wide screen LCD TV it's even better). I find it hard to work with smaller windows like that found in Ableton or even more so Reason. Each to their own though.
never thought of sidechaining a rolling or "shuffle" bassline before, im presuming for space but still that fast rolling ness? thx for showing that
and i noticed u like to compress alot
its like ur pre mastering before going to master
one question tho:
is it okay to "not" compress the sounds like "bass\pads\leads" if your trying to achieve some sort of dynamic balence before you go to master? or is it just a common fad that everyonesolo compresses to get a pro sound?
Jezper, thanks for an amazing tutorial, please keep them coming - this is more than I would have gotten from any magazine or book! Very inspirational!
Once again a great tutorial, your tips and tricks really go a long way!! Long time Airbase fan and I'm really glad I am.
Got a question, not sure how often you compose instrumental pieces/intro/etc, but do you have any tips on taking them and turning them into seqs/leads. Something along the lines of what Alex MORPH did with Walk the Edge?
sorry i didnt ask how to sidechain in abelton , Most sidchain/peak compressors work alike , and adding the kick activates the sidechain , but some producers can keep the pad/lead sidechained with no kick. I used sidechain for a remix of pjanoo and i can sidechain with kick no problem , but without a kick i cant do it .
Why do u have that pitch control in the plugin chain and how does it benefit you in the productions? Just curious, I've never used that in live before.
Let's say I put down a melody and I loop it. Then I wanna flick thru patches to find a good sound for that melody. Thing is, some patches are higher/lower (oscillators set higher/lower). Instead of moving the notes up/down one octave for those patches, I sometimes throw in a pitch plugin that I activate or deactivate. It's just a faster way to move the notes to hear if the patch is suitable. Once I've settled for a sound, the pitch plugin sometimes get's left in the channel to do what it does.
You know, I don't know very much about those things. I just put stuff up if they are to low, and put them down if they are too high. I really suck at mixing/mastering. I leave that to people who knows what they're doing.
Hey, great video and I love the detail you provide with your bassline. I would love to see a deatiled tutorial for creating those powerful kicks? Thanks again for this video.
select what you want to move, click and hold your mouse button, then press tab to move to the other view, and then drop the stuff where you want them.
Nope, nothing. When I'm in my studio I might add some general high on the master, but that's not for mastering purposes. I only do that because my mixing desk outputs more high than it should, so I need to compensate for that.
hi again, i want to ask about that compression. You use lot of compression. Many ppl's told me that i should avoid using compressor, but it looks like pros use alot of compression? what u suggest to me? u use like defayl compressor setting. attack 1 and rls 20.. is that good or what :D

I like the context in which he uses the term "show off". It's cool.

Panning?
ecsmix 3 years ago
What's more, do you usually send all the bass sound to a bus and compress them together?
Why not and what would be the settings based on the bpm and sounds you have.
Thanks.

ooo i use ableton too ! :D its a bit too hard for me but i like it i wanna try fl studios too do u have any suggestions for other simpler programs?
LilBMANUTD7CRONALDO 3 years ago
FL Studio is good...thats what i use. I also use Ableton but the learning curve is real steep in my opinion, i use it for certain things but not for everything. Mainly i use FL id try it out if ur looking for something new
wrafnelPAHC 3 years ago
thanx :)
LilBMANUTD7CRONALDO 3 years ago
I agree with you. The interface of Fl studio seems more logical to me and easier to learn how to use. In Ableton I don't really understand the interface, what is the equivalent in Ableton of the step sequencer that we have in FL or the mixer. That's what I don't know and I don't understand. good thing it can be used via Rewire, cause I only need those FX and some sounds because their quality is very good on Ableton
GhostFight3r 3 years ago
It took me a while when i first started using Ableton to figure out the "sequencer" and how to use it. There are some good tutorials flying about around on youtube check some of those out...goodluck. But yeah, FL doesnt sound as good to me in the end as ableton
wrafnelPAHC 3 years ago
i dont think theres a sequencer in live well i dont know i just use impulse the drum machine lol
tilli09 3 years ago
I like Cubase myself because it has a nice big sequencer window and everything is just big (on a wide screen LCD TV it's even better). I find it hard to work with smaller windows like that found in Ableton or even more so Reason. Each to their own though.

this tutorial is made by Airbase the trance producer? Cause on the beggining it says "my basslines..."
GhostFight3r 3 years ago
Correct...
wrafnelPAHC 3 years ago
wow.... nice(y)
never thought of sidechaining a rolling or "shuffle" bassline before, im presuming for space but still that fast rolling ness? thx for showing that
and i noticed u like to compress alot
its like ur pre mastering before going to master
one question tho:
is it okay to "not" compress the sounds like "bass\pads\leads" if your trying to achieve some sort of dynamic balence before you go to master? or is it just a common fad that everyonesolo compresses to get a pro sound?
Igneous01 3 years ago
What does he mean by a shuffle bassline?
controllerbrain 2 years ago
i really hope this turns into a full track, love it, and thanks for the tutorials, learned a lot from you

Made this in Reason 4, thanks again Jezper!
Sabre1489 3 years ago
I made this in FL 8.
If you want the FLP ask.
TranceDash 3 years ago
Thanks for this jesper, this is exactly what I was asking for in the forums!
Question: what was on channel 16 - the synth 1 ?
giranmoo2 3 years ago

Jezper, thanks for an amazing tutorial, please keep them coming - this is more than I would have gotten from any magazine or book! Very inspirational!

This tutorial kicks the snot out of the 100,000 other crappy "trance tutorials" on YouTube.
This is an incredibly valuable look inside a pro track. Jezper, your music rocks!
nighthawk99 3 years ago 7
hey Jezper is it okay if I make a MIDI or something else of this in FL?
TranceDash 3 years ago
Very nice job.

very nice...... you should reconsider finishing it !;)

Once again a great tutorial, your tips and tricks really go a long way!! Long time Airbase fan and I'm really glad I am.
Got a question, not sure how often you compose instrumental pieces/intro/etc, but do you have any tips on taking them and turning them into seqs/leads. Something along the lines of what Alex MORPH did with Walk the Edge?
tusen tack ;)
waldbelleg 3 years ago
Hi Jezper! A long time big fan here. ;)
I just want applaud you for sharing in on the "secrets". It´s not being done by many, if at all!
For ONCE finally someone who can show off proper music in a video! ;) Thanks a lot.
PS: thanks for not giving up on trance! :)

AirbaseOfficial 3 years ago
What effects are you using on your reverse cymbal and cymbal crashes?
iirybackii 3 years ago
Just a reverb with no filters and then a compressor after that
AirbaseOfficial 3 years ago
Good tutorial , but one question , is how you got the pad to sidechain with no kick , i dont really use sidechain its all new to me?
ULTRAST3LLAR 3 years ago
Check my Youtube Channel, Tutorial number 001. That will show you how to side chain in Ableton.
AirbaseOfficial 3 years ago
sorry i didnt ask how to sidechain in abelton , Most sidchain/peak compressors work alike , and adding the kick activates the sidechain , but some producers can keep the pad/lead sidechained with no kick. I used sidechain for a remix of pjanoo and i can sidechain with kick no problem , but without a kick i cant do it .
ULTRAST3LLAR 3 years ago
Did you check the video? From the 2 minute mark, I show you how to side chain without a kick.
AirbaseOfficial 3 years ago
Use an LFO set to 1/4 notes to control filter frequency or volume. Live's auto filter has one built in.
flackbish 3 years ago
What an awesome tutorial! Thanks so much!
Question:
Why do u have that pitch control in the plugin chain and how does it benefit you in the productions? Just curious, I've never used that in live before.
noizyhorn 3 years ago
Let's say I put down a melody and I loop it. Then I wanna flick thru patches to find a good sound for that melody. Thing is, some patches are higher/lower (oscillators set higher/lower). Instead of moving the notes up/down one octave for those patches, I sometimes throw in a pitch plugin that I activate or deactivate. It's just a faster way to move the notes to hear if the patch is suitable. Once I've settled for a sound, the pitch plugin sometimes get's left in the channel to do what it does.
AirbaseOfficial 3 years ago
Could u make next tutorial about mixing? Like u set ur volumes. To kick, bass hihat clap etc.. That would rly help (at least me) :D
Thanks for ur nice work. Keep it up!
moikkelis1101 3 years ago
You know, I don't know very much about those things. I just put stuff up if they are to low, and put them down if they are too high. I really suck at mixing/mastering. I leave that to people who knows what they're doing.

Hey, great video and I love the detail you provide with your bassline. I would love to see a deatiled tutorial for creating those powerful kicks? Thanks again for this video.
DrumJunkieRecords 3 years ago
Nice one, this should help a lot of young and upcoming producers get to grip with things.
cusismusic 3 years ago
OMG this is so amazing and looks so simple
haha these videos are motivators for me
everytime i feel like having no inspiration, i watch them :D
next up... i'm very curious on how do you make bangin trance leads (like in Daybreaker remix)
i know this might not be something you would share with everybody, but maybe... :)
ColdBlue90 3 years ago
Awesome tute!
christophero0o 3 years ago
u should make a tutorial on recording it from the arrangement view to session view. yes im a noob at ableton
quangphangbang 3 years ago
I could do that, but I never work like that...
AirbaseOfficial 3 years ago
then how do u work....?
quangphangbang 3 years ago
I start out in session mode to make a good groove, then I move all of it into the arrangement view and continue there.
AirbaseOfficial 3 years ago
how do u move them is the question. i never understood how. i thought that the only way to do that was to press the record button
quangphangbang 3 years ago
select what you want to move, click and hold your mouse button, then press tab to move to the other view, and then drop the stuff where you want them.
AirbaseOfficial 3 years ago
no wonder. thx
quangphangbang 3 years ago
Do u have any FX on master track? Thanks! :)
moikkelis1101 3 years ago
Nope, nothing. When I'm in my studio I might add some general high on the master, but that's not for mastering purposes. I only do that because my mixing desk outputs more high than it should, so I need to compensate for that.
AirbaseOfficial 3 years ago
hi again, i want to ask about that compression. You use lot of compression. Many ppl's told me that i should avoid using compressor, but it looks like pros use alot of compression? what u suggest to me? u use like defayl compressor setting. attack 1 and rls 20.. is that good or what :D
moikkelis1101 3 years ago
