I don't see what's wrong with unrestrained emotion in a conductor. He reminds me of Glenn Gould, who was equally gifted.

Bernstein was another conductor who was impossible to watch. See a Toscanini or Monteux performance to know what I am talking about.

If you cannot watch Kleiber or Bernstein then just listen.

Both are Maestros in concucting those symphonies of Beethoven:

Especially No. 4 by Kleiber is a true masterpiece only Furtwängler can be compared to.

Bernstein's Beethoven is very rhythmically. And Karajan did one very good recording in 1949 of Beethoven's 9th symphony! Most of older Karajan recording (with the Karajan sound) you can forget!

I find it anything but pleasurable to watch a conductor like Kleiber performing, obviously for the camera since any major orchestra can play this music in its sleep. All a conductor ever has to do at a performance is just beat the time. Anything beyond that is exhibitionism - and quite distracting to watch. Best to just close your eyes and listen to the music. Beethoven cannot be improved upon, not even by clowns like Kleiber.

Kleiber is so very entertaining and lively. You can tell he truly loves every bit of what he's doing. What better man to record two fantasic symphonies as these.
