@bezaad this is the best film maker of all time you're talking about here! F.W Murneau's revolutionary style defined the silent era, and set the stage for literally every single movie since. I recommend watching the whole film... after all, the original morality play, Dr. Faustus was one of the first good vs. evil stories in medieval literature.
@Seanliamgalway: No need trying to convince this goober. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find that this is just your random garden variety youtuber, who is so engrossed in modern Hollywood, that when shown something of class... it is lost. I bet give him a copy of the original story & watch his head explode. Don't even waste your time. As for me however, you can talk as much as you like & I'll soak up every word! What other Murnau film do you suggest? (I already saw Nosferatu, mind you! lol!)
@robynsegg Le Passion de Jean d'Arc is often considered the best film of all time, and there's also Metropolis, a timeless classic about Murneau's vision of the future.
I have read the drama 4 times and also got a video of a stage version at home. To me, this movie has not that much to do with Goethes "Faust". It's a nice movie at all, but the drama is much more greater.
The original contains much more criticism on human beings and a lesson for the reader and Faust himself.
Mostly I dislike the end, because there's nothing left of the original except that Faust wants to rescue her.
@AmenHel It has been shown that Murnau drew from Goethe, along with older legends of Faust and intended to synthesize it into his own artistic piece. I am always hesitant to accept as valid negative criticism of films based on literature because of a supposed lack of affinity with the original work. Unlike far too many directors in the silent era and through the 40's who were content to simply film a stage play, Murnau had ideas of his own, based on more sources than Goethe.
I saw a version of this last night on some on-demand service with roku. The score was amazing. It was contemporary (industrial-esque) and had heavy drums and some sounds like rainfall, etc. It really enhanced the film. Does anyone know who scored that version of the film?
I believe that the Belgium Rock in Opposition band "Art Zoyd" made the score you are talking about. You can get the Art Zoyd "Faust" CD off amazon.com.
The channel's initiative to publish this movie here is admirable. However, I really recommend a Kino version (this version, with the Timothy Brock soundtrack) in a higher resolution, 240p simply isn't enough. There are too much artifacts, and the video is too dark... the movie has a much higher quality than this in terms of image. I wish Openflix would upload this again in HD =/
I've certainly not personally seen the movie flick and as a result decided to go to see this one found on thisisawesomemovie. c000m and so i actually said? everything was in fact wonderful. an individual simply just definitely have to acknowledge who the three central characters are and as a result anything else is going to be logical.
@Luby512 watch faust by jan svankmajer. warning; if your mind and body melts into a primordial and grotesquely conscious clay that takes the Christian god countless eternity's to put your fragmented being into the shape that could resemble a "hasnt seeners then it is still worth the watch.

i personnally hate symbolism. Most people thinks ''oh i dont really understand this. Then it must be very artistic.''.Those who understands about the symbolism thinks:''oh i gained the ability of reading symbolist books easyly. İ am an intelligent person''. No you did not got more intelligent by doing that. You just gained an useless attirubute that you can not use in real life.
it is normal that young people of today can not appreciate masterpieces like this excellent film...but please at least show some respect to all this classic values!and you can watch lady gaga with the 40something million and leave us 117 in ..peace!!!P.S:and think again will growing old about class and classical...love from a greek teacher....
Faust is the name of a famous doctor and alchemist from the 16th century who died in an explosion in his laboratory. People back then accused him of having made a contract with the devil. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, our national poet, wrote a novel about him called "Faust". This is something like our national novel, and this is the movie adaption of it from the 1920's.
But THIS movie is the film adaption of Goethe's Faust. Is this so unbelievably difficult to understand? A lot of people have written books about Faust. One of those is, f.e., Nicolaus Lenau or your Christopher Martlowe.
GOD DAMN, THIS FUCKING FILM is an adaption of GOETHES'S and only GOETHE'S version of this fucking story. Is this so unbelievably difficult to understand? Is this too much for your brain?
@HerrWagnerfreund Clearly, but Marlowe wasn't just some 'person,' arguably he was a literary genius and he can certainly be credited for popularising the Faust myth. Calm down and try to enjoy life a little more...
@ThiefOskar hhhmmmm one thing is bothering me. How come Marlowe got inspired from the german translation when Marlowe lived from 1564 to 1593 and Goethe lived from 1749 to 1832?
Goethe didn't really "invent" Faust from beginning, there was a guy called Johann Spiess who published the story in 1587 in Germany. Because it was successful, they began translating it into English, Dutch, French and Czech in 1588. Actually, german literature was treating Faust ever since the beginning of the 16th century. The whole topic is known by the name of "Fauststoff", treating some german guy called Johann Faust, who supposedly was born around 1480.
Wow. I never thought I'd sit through two hours of a black and white movie with no words. The music is excellent and makes up for the lack of dialogue.
What I was hoping to see in this movie was Goethe's 2 part to Faust, mostly I wanted to see Faust's student Wagner create the homunculus that would aid him in the rescue of Faust in the Pharsalian Fields.
